The polish conception of aesthetic education began in the 1960s. The grounds of this theory were formulated by Bogdan Suchodolski, who recognised it as an integral part of general education. According to this theory, aesthetic education encompasses two areas: education for art, i.e. education for aesthetic sensibility and aesthetic culture, and education through art, i.e. development of full personality, also in the intellectual, moral, social, educational, imaginative and creative areas. Essential for the Polish theory of aesthetic education are the proposals and conclusions presented by Irena Wojnar, particularly her recognition of education through art as a creating an “open mind” attitude. A distinctive feature of Irena Wojnar’s pedagogical reflection on art is its interdisciplinary nature, which takes into account not only the educational one, but also the aesthetic, psychological and social perspective on the educational values and functions of art. The conceptions of visual art and musical education developed within the “general” theory of aesthetic education have been used in designing the music and visual arts curricula. The contemporary Polish theory of aesthetic education joined the stream of new educational thinking, in the perspective of cultural pluralism and new ethical and social obligations to individuals and to the world. The so perceived aesthetic education, recognised by UNESCO as an important part of education for culture, including the so-called human culture, deserves both the attention and interest of theorists as well as innovative practical solutions.

Musical education has a beneficial effect on higher cognitive functions, but questions arise whether associations between music lessons and cognitive abilities are specific to a domain or general. We tested 194 boys in Grade 3 by measuring reading and spelling performance, non verbal intelligence and asked parents about musical activities since preschool. Questionnaire data showed that 53% of the boys had learned to play a musical instrument. Intelligence was higher for boys playing an instrument (p< .001). To control for unspecific effects we excluded families without instruments. The effect on intelligence remained (p< .05). Furthermore, boys playing an instrument showed better performance in spelling compared to the boys who were not playing, despite family members with instruments (p< .01). This effect was observed independently of IQ. Our findings suggest an association between music education and general cognitive ability as well as a specific language link.

The paper deals with axiological aspects of folklore as intersubjective and intrasubjective communication and the folklore values education with regard to current trends of music pedagogy, in particular the integrative music pedagogy, polyaesthetic education and humanistic-creative paradigm of music pedagogy. Currently, we can see a shift in the semantic understanding of folklore – from the “diachronic-contextual” folklore towards the folklore in the modern updated application intention. The inclusion of folklore elements in the modern educational strategy may adumbrate, in a wider context, future motivating stimuli to life-long musical or cultural cultivation of an individual, to adequate hermeneutic analysis of folk art attributes, understanding its complexity, structure, connections and communication aspects.

The article is an attempt at exploring the selected aspects of the educational use of world music genre in “Dorotka” Artistic and Theatrical kindergarten in Olsztyn as an element of intercultural musical education. The insight into the researched issue was enabled by the interviews with 6 teachers working there. The research problems raised pertain to: the criteria for the selection of pieces from the field of world music, its educational values, as well as aims of intercultural education, which are or can be implemented by using the music of the world in kindergarten. The interpretative analyses of the respondents` statements revealed that the selection of the repertoire from the world music field is conditioned by the children`s positive reactions, their developmental possibilities, musical preferences of their teachers, the children themselves and their environment, as well as the suggestions of volunteers visiting the establishment. The presence of the music of the world during playtime or music and movement classes strengthens the preschoolers’ motivation to learn and evokes their spontaneous kinesthetic and vocal reactions. In the teachers’ opinions the benefits of world music can be divided into musical (e.g. sound values, exotic instruments), cognitive (sensitization to the specificity of a given musical culture), social and cultural (e.g. positive attitude to the environment), those related to general well-being (e.g. manual abilities, expression of emotions), as well as relaxation and therapeutic ones (e.g. calming down). Using world music in kindergarten fits into the scope of the aims of intercultural education: in the sphere of consciousness (e.g. learning and understanding cultural differences and music as a common value), skills (in particular, communication-related), and attitudes (openness, tolerance, interactivity).

The article is devoted to the lullaby, a unique piece of music that has developed, in the semantic and musical layers, the characteristic features of a highly emotional style. Scientific research shows that the lullaby is a song recognizable for its function all over the world, and that babies react to it more strongly than to the mother’s speech. The article attempts to indicate the place of the lullaby in the musical education of children and parents as well. Difficulties limiting its use were also indicated, which are related to the disappearance of the transmission of folk culture, the lack of making music at home, as well as the shortcomings of formal music education.

The article tells about Christian traditions of music education in the context of “a dialogue” of two cultures – Byzantine and Old Kyivan Rus. After analyzing common and different features in upbringing and professional preparation of choristers of both countries the author proves, due to comparative-historical method, that Byzantine music education was not mechanically “transplanted” or “transferred” on Kyivan basis. Correspondence of music education contents to general level of Byzantine and Old Kyivan development of society, government’s requirements concerning preparation of choristers, differences in structure of educational establishments in Byzantine Empire and Kyivan Rus prove mutual enrichment of both cultures. It is stated in the article that music education and choir service were very important in both Byzantine Empire and Kyivan Rus. At the beginning Christian communities and then monasteries and government started to be concerned about high professional preparation of choristers. Although education in Byzantine Empire and Kyivan Rus has lots of common tendencies, the one in Byzantine Empire was more complicated, multilevel and it was planned not only for demands of the Church but for public requirements too. Prerogatives of ecclesiastic non-multilevel education can be seen in Kyivan Rus. It is difficult to define a character of “domestic yard” school. The contents of music education corresponded to general level of development of societies in both states. However, Byzantine Empire was an accumulator of culture and its bearer for young European barbarian countries. The contents of music education in Kyivan Rus were directed at Graeco-Christian religious tradition. It also absorbed Syrian and Jewish tunes, which were easier for perception due to texts written in the native language. Certain differences in Byzantine and Kyivan Rus spiritual singing can be seen from the origin of Bizatine liturgy in Kyivan territories, for example stress changes in cantorials.

Music from Walt Disney’s animations is an element of pop culture. However, it is not a world limited to popular music but a space where ethnic music meets new sounds. The world of contemporary music enters a dialogue with the music of the sources, becoming its new translator. Thanks to Walt Disney’s film productions, multicultural music education opens up a new dimension in which globalization becomes an ally of local culture. The article addresses how both sound and word are used to present a different culture. In the cited examples, the language with its rhythm and melody is treated as an interesting musical material. Selected Walt Disney films were analyzed – their soundtracks as well as articles and reviews, blogs about the studio’s musical productions. In the considerations, a lot of attention was devoted to the song, which is the carrier of the main content of the film and the most frequently played element of the film image. Some attempts were made to indicate its functions in intercultural education, but also the ways of its use in child education.

In the current issue of the journal „Ars inter Culturas”, scholarly articles have been gathered and arranged into several thematic groups. Most of the issue is devoted to music, its analysis and to musical education, both conceptual and historical studies, as well as research into its effects. The articles in the first section are arranged chronologically, covering musical space from ancient Egypt to contemporary times. The second section includes historical research on music education, from the perspective of both Eastern European and Polish experiences. The third section maintains a multicultural profile, showing the interpenetration of various musical concepts between countries and their national adaptations.Traditionally, space is set aside in „Ars inter Culturas” for fields that round out the theore-tical area of other aspects of multiculturalism. This time, these were texts offering theological analysis as well as in teaching religious education for young people. The last part of this issue are references to other arts – ballet, design, as well as historical and contemporary interpreta-tion of literature, and sport.
