Objective: To explore the dynamism of the environment and the impact on service company competitive advantage from a customer relationship management (CRM) dynamic capabilities (DCs) perspective. This work also aims to develop a multidimensional conceptualisation of the dynamic environment and propose a theoretical model for analysing the impact of the environment's dynamism on the relationship between dynamic CRM capabilities and competitive advantage. Research Design and Methods: Based on the resource-based view (RBV) and dynamic capabilities view (DCV), the method of critical literature analysis was used. Literature sources written in the last two decades were analysed. Findings: The result of the literature research became the development of a new conceptualisation of the dynamic environment and its three relevant dimensions, as well as the proposal of constructs in the theoretical model, where the dynamism of the environment plays a moderating role in the relationship between dynamic CRM capabilities and competitive advantage. Implications/Recommendations: As implications for further research, empirical verification of the created model and checking the relationship between the constructs should be indicated. Contribution: The findings extend the application of RBV and DCV in marketing knowledge. In addition, the model and this study's conclusions direct service firms to develop CRM capabilities that can enhance the company, thereby enabling the building of competitive advantage in a dynamic environment.

In this explorative study, we investigate the relationship between dynamic capabilities and innovation capabilities. Dynamic capabilities are at the core of strategic management in terms of how firms can ensure adaptation to changing environments over time. Our paper follows two paths of argumentation. First, we review and discuss some major contributions to the theories on ordinary capabilities, dynamic capabilities, and innovation capabilities. We seek to identify different understandings of the concepts in question, in order to clarify the distinctions and relationships between dynamic capabilities and innovation capabilities. Second, we present a case study of the ’Innovation Clinic’ at a major university hospital, including four innovation projects. We use this case study to explore and discuss how dynamic capabilities can be extended, as well as to what extent innovation capabilities can be said to be dynamic. In our conclusion, we discuss the conditions for nurturing ‘dynamic innovation capabilities’ in organizations.

The aim of this article is to recognize the implications of various types of environmental dynamism for the effects of operational and dynamical capabilities. The research method used is the critical analysis of literature in the field of strategic management. The research findings in the literature, on the operational effects and dynamic capabilities in the context of environmental dynamism were properly structured in the article. There were controversial research findings on environmental dynamism and its determining of the effects of operational and dynamic capabilities. The results indicate that operational and dynamic capabilities have different performance effects in high-dynamic and low-dynamic environments. The discussion on operational effects and dynamic capabilities in different market conditions still requires better theorizing and empirical research on the implications of market dynamism. The recommendations of the managers are directed at the understanding of the nature of the environment, which is crucial for the success of the implementation of new practices in the company.

Although recent evidence suggests that the development of dynamic capabilities (DC) is a key factor to gain and sustain competitive advantages to promote firm´s growth, the question of how SMEs create, identify, and seize opportunities for growth have not been fully explored, particularly in developing countries with scarce resources. The aim of this study is to shed light on how SMEs develop capabilities to grow in the specific context of developing countries with resources constraints. To achieve a detailed description of the processes involved, this study applies a qualitative methodology based on a comparative case study of eight SMEs within the software and tourism industries in Argentine, which have been previously identified as dynamic sectors with high growth potential. Our findings suggest that SMEs develop DC mainly through an emerging process of iterative experimentation rather than through strategic planning. This process involves the coordination of organizational actions and resources, with managers playing a key role.

Are regional airports economic effectiveness-oriented? Evidence from Poland Striving for a satisfactory level of effectiveness, managers must take actions aimed at achieving the set objectives and at reacting flexibly to changes that take place in the environment. They can do it by referring to the concept of dynamic capabilities that draw attention to a specific category of competences. Assuming that dynamic capabilities can be developed in any type of organisation, the article attempts to answer the question about the reasons for the differences in economic effectiveness of 13 Polish regional airports and 458 private enterprises. The results suggest that the category of economic effectiveness is important not only for private enterprises but also for regional airports. The findings reveal that the development of dynamic capabilities is conditioned not only by the period of the enterprise’s existence but also by the context of its operation, primarily the industry context.

The aim of the article is to address the problems of the Dynamic Capabilities Approach (DCV) with regard to polarisation, inconsistencies and tautologies, and to propose a new linguistic solution for the challenges of DCV. Through adopting the definitions of the general terms used in DCV (like capacity, ability and capability) from the English language dictionaries, the author builds the concept of capability activation and organizational dynamics. The linguistic platform presented in the article allows to link different perspectives of publications discussing DC issues. By drawing up a new perspective on the concept of capabilities and organizational dynamism, the article clears the problems with tautologies. When it comes to contribution, this article is the first publication from a series of papers extensively discussing the strategic competitive advantage of organization in the perspective of author’s Concept of Organizational Competence Emergence (CEC).

Dynamic capabilities are an essential theoretical construct that is useful for understanding the phenomenon of competition. Still, in spite of the apparent popularity of this subject, the existing management literature could do with more studies into processes that shape dynamic capabilities. The purpose of this article is to systematisc different approaches to the dynamic capabilities concept as they are found in the existing literature, with a particular focus on its relevance to modern-day organisations as a tool to increase their competitiveness. The other goal is to discuss two issues that are critical to the dynamic capabilities concept. Firstly, what are the conditions for the predominant role of dynamic capabilities in the area of strategic management? Secondly, can the dynamic capabilities concept be treated as an underlying theoretical and methodological framework for strategic choices in modern-day organisations?

Purpose: The environmental problems which have been deepening in recent decades, i.e. climate change or the degradation of the biosphere, are creating a new reality of pursuing business activity. On the one hand, firms - by their nature - seek to maintain the efficiency and to gain a competitive advantage, on the other hand - they are more and more often obliged to balance environmental goals with economic goals. Although there are opinions that these goals are competitive in themselves, it is possible for firms to reconcile them effectively by adopting Environmental Sustainability Orientation. Since this orientation is analysed in the literature from various research perspectives, this paper attempts to conceptualise it from a Dynamic Capabilities perspective. Design/methodology/approach: The paper is theoretical and based on an in-depth review of the literature. The developed conceptual model includes the direct and indirect relations among dynamic capabilities formulated in multidimensional terms, Environmental Sustainability Orientation and organisational outcomes. Embedding considerations in resource-based theories, three key processes (organisational learning, integration and reconfiguration of resources) have also been analysed, which, as necessary for building dynamic capabilities, make it easier for firms to adopt strategic Environmental Sustainability Orientation. Findings: The considerations included in the paper complement the literature in the area of strategic management and make it easier to understand Environmental Sustainability Orientation at the organisational level. They also point to a need to undertake further scientific work, the authors of which can use the research propositions elaborated in the paper and thus empirically verify the proposed conceptual model. Originality/value: The key scientific contribution of the paper is the development of a research framework formulating Environmental Sustainability Orientation from a Dynamic Capabilities perspective, i.e., respectively: (1) the capability to identify opportunities and/or threats (sensing), (2) the capability to use these opportunities and/or cope with threats (seizing) and (3) the capability to reconfigure the firm’s resources and competences (reconfiguring). The logic of this approach results from the fact that the three fundamental processes underlying the building of dynamic capabilities - organisational learning, integration and reconfiguration of resources - supported by the conscious action of CEO, make it easier for firms to adopt strategic Environmental Sustainability Orientation.

The number of publicly funded initiatives to establish or strengthen networks and clusters, in order to enhance innovation, has been increasing. Returns on such investments vary, and the aim of this study is to explore to what extent the variation in benefits for firms participating in networks or clusters can be explained by their dynamic capabilities (DC). Based on survey data from five Norwegian networks, the results suggest that firms with higher DC are more successful in harvesting the potential benefits of being member of a network.

The evolution of the approach to the public sector has been changing the expectations towards the sector’s organisations in a substantial manner. A particular challenge was the departure from the classic Weber management model, postulated in the new public management (NPM), towards market mechanisms, precedence of performance criteria, public sector functioning based on principles similar to the ones applicable to the private sector. The direction of these changes resulted in the permeation of the concepts used in the private sector to the public sector. One of these includes the dynamic capabilities concept. Dynamic capabilities can constitute an organisation’s potential for systemic problem solving, resulting from the mindfulness of the signals deriving from an organisation’s environment to ensure the correct direction of functioning and development of a public sector organisation. The paper includes an attempt to answer the question whether the concept of dynamic capabilities can constitute an answer to the changing expectations towards public sector organisations? The research method used in the paper is the literature study.
