In a situation in which the market economy is regarded as so important and decisive as to induce the emergence of a market society, the notion of the «sacred» becomes essential. The market is perfectly legitimate as a forum of negotiations, but it has a purely instrumental value. A market society is a contradiction in terminis. Only the concept of the Sacred, despite its ambiguity, can preserve and enhance the final values on which a society is built (justice, love, human recognition, interpersonal dialogue).

The article describes the specificity of dentistry services market, demonstrating the activities of the public and private sectors. A detailed analysis was conducted regarding the use of dentistry services on the basis of various criteria. An attempt was made to establish the costs of dentistry health care incurred by the Health-Insurance Fund and the National Health Fund for the insured in the years 2003 - 2004. The article presents also average spending on dentistry health care incurred by an average household. The last part of the article concerns the employment of dental surgeons.

Economics and ethics are practical sciences. The common research subject of both sciences is man. Economics is looking for an answer to the question of how to manage in business life. Ethics looks for the answer to the question of how to live. Because man is a person, his value brings consequences for all areas of human activity. This also applies to the market. The market is one of the foundations of economic life and is a great good for people and societies. The market is defined in different ways. It is worth comprehensively describing what the market is, emphasizing its personal character. In economics, attention is paid to market failure, understood mostly as the ineffectiveness of management (deviation from the model market, which is perfectly competitive). The negative impact of the market on society is also identified. Although moral aspects are increasingly taken into account in the concept of market failure, there is no general theory that attempts to capture market in moral aspects. Therefore, it is worth asking whether such a theory is possible. The construction of the moral theory of market failure can be a reference point to the analysis of market practices and institutional conditions from an ethical point of view.

Logistics is today one of the decisive advantages in competition on the markets. Companies and entire supply chains compete more and more often. Logistics, which has ceased to be treated as a set of methods useful for solving operational problems, has gained strategic importance. This study presents the logistics area as a factor in the competitiveness of enterprises against the background of two main trends of competition research, i.e. a trend dealing with two key issues for the economy, namely the general characteristics of the market, i.e. its structure, development, functioning, the situation prevailing on it and the strategic behaviour of enterprises, and the second trend, included in theories referring to the role of the state in a market economy.

In the paper entitled, the subject matter for analysis was deemed to be the consumer behaviour of the elderly. The author in question attempts to answer the following question: What are the specifics of behaviour for senior citizens on the market of goods and services? What factors determine the consumer behaviour of senior citizens to the largest extent? In the search for answers to these questions, analysis has been run on chosen consumer behavioural features. The factors differentiating the market of goods and services for senior citizen consumers have been presented. There is a concentration on the analysis of the chosen classification by indicating the difficulty in building the typology in this category of purchasers. With the aim of outlining the specifics of the categories of older consumers, the results of self research on the consumer behaviour of senior citizens on the market of goods and services have been presented. The economic, social and individual factors which determine the consumer behaviour of older people have been indicated.

Isotonic drinks belong to a group of products which are becoming more and more popular among teenagers, sportsmen, as well as the elderly and fitness-oriented people. The proper osmolality of isotonic drinks should be of 300 mOsm kg⁻¹ of water ±10%. The objective of this study is to analyse whether the isotonic drinks available on the Tricity market (the area of three cities: Gdańsk, Sopot, Gdynia) are authentic isotonic drinks. For the purpose of the study 25 bottles of isotonic drinks of different brands and flavours have been purchased. The osmolality of the majority of the drinks was within the recommendations of European Union – from 270 to 330 mOsm kg⁻¹ of water. Twelve of the drinks have not got the osmolality declared by the manufacturers. Six of them have not met the requirements for an isotonic drink (two of these had not been declared to be isotonic drinks). It seems that manufacturers should observe the quite broad limit of osmolality and the criterion of osmolality is the evidence for their authenticity.

Napoje izotoniczne są coraz popularniejszą grupą towarów kupowaną zarówno przez młodzież, sportowców, jak i osoby starsze dbające o swoją formę. Powinny charakteryzować się osmolalnością 300 mOsm kg⁻¹ wody ±10%. Celem pracy było stwierdzenie, czy napoje obecne na rynku trójmiejskim są autentycznymi izotonikami. Zakupiono 25 napojów izotonicznych różnych marek o wielu smakach. Większość badanych napojów miała osmolalność w granicach rekomendowanych przez Unię Europejską – od 270 do 330 mOsm kg⁻¹ wody. Dwanaście napojów nie miało deklarowanej przez producenta osmolalności. Spośród badanych napojów sześć z nich nie spełniało warunków napoju izotonicznego (w tym dwa nie były deklarowane jako izotoniczne). Wydaje się, że dość szeroka granica osmolalności powinna być przez producentów przestrzegana, zaś kryterium osmolalności jest dla napojów izotonicznych wyrazem ich autentyczności.

Zdefiniowane i dostatecznie czyste odpady polimerowe są odzyskiwane w wielu krajach Europy metodą recyklingu mechanicznego lub spalania z odzyskiem energii. Odpady mieszane i zanieczyszczone trafiają przeważnie na składowiska. Omówiono możliwości wykorzystania odpadów mieszanych do recyklingu surowcowego i odzysku energii. Przedyskutowano szanse i ograniczenia rozwoju gospodarki odpadami w aspekcie rozwoju rynku na produkty z odzysku.

This article undertakes the question of „economic man” in context of postmodern philosophy. The purpose of it is to analyze current understanding of man in market surrounding and his family relations. In the beginning the genesis of homo economicus model is presented and attempt is made to find answer to the question of its contemporary meaning and “family situation”. Then the article shows why we should resign from using this model and substitute it with homo socioeconomicus. The very concept of homo economicus – well known and often discussed – although reduces human being, in the light of postmodern thinking seems to relive. That is why it is necessary to reflect if there is similarity between “economic man” and the vision of man preferred by postmodernism. One of the proofs for it may be current situation of family which is not supported by postmodern homo economicus concept. It seems to be logical consequence when we realize that individualism of “economic man” is strengthened by postmodern antipathy towards social institutions.

This article shows the main forms of market structures in the global economy. In early years of the United States, a monopoly usually meant an organization to which the government had granted some exclusive privilege. The monopolist was thus the sole legal seller. Competition is a process in which competitors engage. We cannot have competition without competitors. It does not seem as obvious to people that we also cannot have competition if we prohibit competitors from taking actions intended to increase their share of the market. So there is a very important for enterprises to know the type and the scale of the market structures.

According to market research on Polish consumers, color and aromatic components are very important in coffee beverages as they are the main constituents of the sensory experience of coffee drinkers. This study investigated the impact of degree of roasting on the evolution of coffee sensory features. Furthermore, the aim of the study was to evaluate the relationship between selected sensory parameters and L*a*b color values. The aroma profiles of coffee beverages were influenced by the degrees of roasting the coffee beans. Our study showed that there is evolution and change in the aroma characteristics from light to dark roasting coffee. Furthermore, our data do not show the significant correlation between selected sensory attributes and color parameters L*, a*, b.

The paper is devoted to examining the role of the shadow economy in the context of market equilibrium. The Walras theorem was used in order to highlight the role of the shadow economy in market equilibrium violation. Habitually, a majority of theories as well as models focus just on observed variables and latent factors are omitted. The shadow economy is an unprejudiced typical case in this respect. It exists in any economy and it very often influences market mechanisms significantly. A mathematical model was employed to exhibit dependence between the shadow economy and market equilibrium. Whenever the shadow economy is ignored in modeling market equilibrium, the market is proved to be balanced. The situation changes when the shadow economy is taken into account. Market equilibrium is difficult to be achieved.

Skroplony gaz zmniejsza swoją objętość około sześćset razy dzięki czemu można go stosunkowo łatwo przechowywać i transportować. W artykule przedstawiono produkcję LNG w ostatnich dwudziestu latach, głównych eksporterów i importerów oraz ceny. Zwrócono uwagę na duże perspektywy rozwoju i wykorzystania tej formy gazu.

International energy market develops dynamically. Gas cooled to temperature -163oC changes its form into a liquid and can be stored and transported as a boiling liquid in special tanks. As a liquid, natural gas occupies only 1/600th the volume of its gaseous state. After regasification it can be used to the same purposes as conventional natural gas. This article presents LNG production in the last twenty years, main exporters and importers as well as prices. We can predict that the LNG market will grow significantly in the next few years.

This paper presents the European market of transparent insulation materials as viewed by manufacturers. The objective of the study was to analyse the application of transparent insulation materials in the construction sector across Europe, determine the popularity of various technologies and materials used to manufacture them, the competition among transparent insulation manufacturers, investment in the development of new transparent insulation technologies, and trends in demand for transparent insulation in Europe. The analysis was performed on the basis of a survey of manufacturers. The use of transparent insulation is associated with high cost, yet the potential return on investment in the form of savings over the course of a building’s life-cycle convinces many potential developers to apply these materials. Based on the results of the survey, it can be concluded that European companies follow the increase in energy-efficiency and the transparent insulation market is prosperous, yet differs from country to country. It was observed that the positive perception of indirect heat gain transparent insulation systems was the most prevalent in Germany. The paper also explores the situation on the author’s domestic market – the Polish transparent thermal insulation market.

The article is devoted to the Blue Ocean Strategy (BOS) in commercial banks’ activity. This strategy is regarded as an important tool in order to create competitive advantage among banks. Currently there is the Red Ocean Strategy in Polish banking sector. Those who can implement BOS will be able to win the market.
