One of the roles that school plays is to introduce values that are meaningful and that present a measure for human activity; not only practical values of the cognitive world but also spiritual values, however the Framework Educational Programme for Basic Education is aimed at those values that are “generally accepted by the society”, i. e. pragmatic values. Leading thinkers advert to a crisis of values and claim that spiritual values disappear from the lives of individuals as well from the society. They seek ways to prevent this tendency.

In this paper the authors present the issue of the significance of values in the operations of members of detached policegroups. Members of such groups usually operate in contexts referenced to the situations threatening core values, where thereis a conflict between being secure and having a lack of security during the operations of the unit. The two states mentioned abovedeserve special consideration when discussing issues understood as components of the first pillar of a safety culture. The authorsput research questions concerning possible links between values and other variables highlighted in the research, their dependenciesand level. The values reported and thoroughly researched in the Schwartz scale are an excellent instrument for describingand explaining human behaviour in situations of making choices and accepting challenges. The usefulness of this instrumentwas confirmed in this study which obtained interesting research results on the relationship between values and identifiabledemographic variables in the studied group. The authors of the project believe that the issue of values operationalised in the tasksis a useful tool for the interpretation of the behaviour of officers who are members of detached groups. Situations where individualand public security is threatened are usually included in the specificity of the contexts in which uniformed services and securitystaff operate. When conceptualising the issue of attitudes and values it is necessary to undertake research of an internationalcharacter. Research in other cultural conditions allows account to be taken of both the specificity of the mechanisms of creationand the functioning of the system of values, as well as confirmation of their universality. It also seems advisable to focus ona conceptualisation aimed at ordering the understanding and interpretation of key concepts in the field of values. This can begreatly facilitated by the use of methods for the study of personality already employed in subsequent studies carried out by ourresearch team.

The Department of Political Science of the Alexander Dubček University in Trenčin during 2018 - 2020 aims to solve the project of the Cultural and Educational Grant Agency of the Ministry of Education, Science, Research and Sports of the Slovak Republic (known as KEGA project). The KEGA Project The Innovation of Methodical Sheets for Teachers of Civics from the need of Prevention of Extremism and Education for Democratic Citizenship is focused on the analysis of the phenomenon of extremism and the other forms of intolerance towards other members of society in terms of several social sciences (political science, international relations, history, sociology, massmedia studies) with the intention to innovate methodical sheets for civics education teachers. In the final phase of project a synthesis of these views will take place to make curriculums easier to use for teachers within civic education courses and at the same time, to strengthen the acute need to prevent angry demonstrations. This synthesis should create more effective upbringing and education towards democratic citizenship. The aim of the project is to analyze selected aspects related to issues of extremism in theory, the synthesis of which contributes to problem solving, resulting in new methodical sheets in an online available format. The acquired knowledge will be available to the professional public, especially to primary and secondary school teachers in the Slovak Republic, in the framework of workshops, thematic lectures and summer schools.

The goal of the present contribution is an unconventional one. It concerns not only a punctual problem - the axiology of ethnical values - assumed on the “vertical” of a single discipline, as it is usually done, but a complex of “horizontal” problems unified by an integrative methodology: that of semiotics. The great quantity of the problems involved obliged us − on a limited frame − to present them intuitively, to formulate only some hypotheses and models, for a preliminary holistic knowledge.

The process of socialization of the man takes place in new conditions. Social transformation is the result of social compromises. Today's values, which a man strives for, have moved into the individual sphere. A special value within the value system of the man is belief. The man seeks to translate concrete realia into his own experiences and individual peculiarities. Nowadays, we are facing a requirement to continuously strengthen all trends associated with work, privacy and human relations.

The authors deal with the issue of transformations and the establishment of news journalism genres in the online media environment, with a focus on extended multimedia news reports. They emphasise that the technical and technological platform of online media creates fertile ground for the modification of genres sourced from conventional media. According to them, the multi-platform essence of online media and the hybridisation trend in genre-based approaches are a suitable foundation for the formation of extended multi-platform news. They raise the question of whether it is possible at the end of the second decade of the new millennium to formulate a premise under which an extended multimedia news report has specific typological characteristics and established creative procedures. They reach a clear conclusion based on qualitative analysis completed on a selection of extended multimedia news reports from the portals sme.sk and pravda.sk. They state that it is appropriate to talk about a stable structure as well as established procedures in the creation of extended multimedia news reports.

An attempt to shake the established world order of Western society, based on International Law, by the waging of war, has reached its peak. This is evidenced not only by Russia’s war in Ukraine, but also by Russia’s political attempts to destabilise Moldova’s approach to Western values, along with the recent unrest in Georgia, where there is a risk of restricting individual freedom of expression, and the constant threats against the Baltic States. Conflicts of values have existed throughout world history, but the events we are witnessing now are not an accident, but a systematic reiteration of Russia’s influence, with the aim of maintaining its influence and, perhaps, increasing its power in the region. The aim of this article is to show the clash of contemporary values in the current socio-political situation from the perspectives of theory and practice. Russian political leaders had long used alarming language in their rhetoric, up to and including the moment of the Russian invasion of Ukraine. In Europe and throughout the Western world there was a belief in universal values with peaceful/stable global institutions, a belief which has proved to be misguided. On the other hand, military aggression against a free and independent country can be interpreted as a direct and clear attempt to destabilise the values of Western civilisation, without which no democratic society can exist. The timing of the military aggression was chosen after a decline in civic confidence from the perspective of the COVID-19 crisis; European countries were experiencing a reduction in political activity among their citizens, dissatisfaction with the political elite, and a certain decline in confidence in the EU institutions. The course of the pandemic reflected the lack of critical thinking in societies, as individuals were also at risk of manipulation in the information sphere. The Russian invasion of Ukraine caused some indignation in the Western world and a failure to react quickly to the rapid turn of events. After the first year of the war, the EU Member States managed not only to change their position but also to give unwavering and unequivocal support to the victim of the war, namely, Ukraine. So far, the EU slogan “United in Diversity” has become “United in Solidarity”, helping Ukraine to hold on and possibly win the war against the aggressor state, because no war, especially a war of values, ends on the front lines. As a result of current events, EU and transatlantic cooperation has undergone a major transformation involving extensive cooperation, a clear position on international law, and a desire to preserve and strengthen Western values.

Values belong to the cultural order and constitute the foundations of social life. By internalizing them in attitudes and behaviors, in the practices of social life, people shape the cultural profiles of both entire communities and the social personalities of individuals. Communities are created around a community of values and because of this, they take specific forms, such as nations, states, cultural regions, cities or religious communities. Cultural profiles of individuals’ social personalities are a consequence of the internalization of the world of values into individually constructed and implemented projects of social life. The article presents the reconstruction of value systems of the city’s inhabitants, based on empirical research. It focuses on material conditions of declared values orientation and the hierarchy of dignity values. In the hierarchy of recognized values, primary, dominant, indifferent, secondary and marginal values have been distinguished. Many factors: historical and contemporary, cultural and political, determine whether it models the image of the “citizen of the cit””, which is possible to reconstruct based on the conducted research. Its most visible feature is the axiological distance and maybe even the gap between primary and marginal values.

Wartości należą do porządku kultury i stanowią fundamenty życia społecznego.

The term „Lublin Philosophical School” refers to the mode of philosophizing devised in the 1950’s at the catholic University of lublin. After a brief history, the paper first discusses some methodological features of this mode and the social role of philosophy as a self-awareness of culture. Employing the School’s philosophy, the paper then considers the issue of post-truth and that of the value-ladenness of science. The post-truth approach replaces evidence with emotions, and in consequence, argumentation is replaced with power. This in turn threatens the human person, her rationality and freedom. Admitting that science is value-laden and values are subjective leads to denying the cognitive status of science. Lublin philosophy offers such a concept of value and scientific knowledge which allows one to solve the problem created by the valueladenness of science. Thus, the paper shows that the lublin School’s philosophy can provide answers to contemporary problems and evaluate intellectual developments of culture.

The issue of values was the main subject of research interest of Rev. Prof. Jan Szymczyk. He analysed it both in his scientific and journalist works. In his books and research articles, he explored ways of defining values, their hierarchies and their relations with motivations, social identities and lifestyles. In his journalist articles, he described how individuals, communities and social groups manifest their attitudes toward values. The main message of his journalism was the defence of reality based on Christian values. He researched contemporary phenomena and processes in which he saw a threat to the traditional order, including such values as dignity of man and nation, truth, freedom and valour. He described examples of violations of these values committed by representatives of various social groups, not only political, scientific, cultural or media-related, but also members of religious communities.

Problematyka wartości była głównym przedmiotem zainteresowań ks. prof. Jana Szymczyka.
