Purpose: This narrative review shows the scope of the application of design thinking in planning social innovations based on the goals of implementing design thinking identified in the literature. Design/methodology/approach: This paper is a classic literature review, with particular emphasis on articles from recent years presenting specific practices in the application of design thinking. Research limitations/implications: This study is a qualitative review and cannot constitute the basis for a quantitative assessment of the effectiveness or convenience of using the discussed approach in social innovation. Moreover, this is not a systematic review. Therefore, it is not free from possible areas that have not been fully exposed. Practical implications: This study can help build a strategy for using design thinking to plan social innovations by entities that are interested in them. In particular, it allows you to identify the goals of using design thinking that are consistent with the goals of a given organization. However, this approach has not yet been used. Social implications: This paper identifies the goals of using design thinking based on the analysis of current practices; therefore, it contributes to a better understanding of the organization’s operating strategy, which is particularly useful in promoting and planning social innovations. It can accelerate social innovation where it can be the subject of this approach. Originality/value: The presented paper is an original review of scientific work. It is particularly addressed to management theorists and practitioners, who may find it helpful in identifying new areas in which they can apply the design thinking approach. The term ‘desing thinking’ is generally understood as an approach to problem-solving or a specific problem-solving process based on this approach.

Purpose: The aim of this article is to identify initiatives related to social innovation in the area of energy. The rationale for undertaking research on this topic stemmed from the scarcity of scientific studies on social innovation in the energy sector. Design/methodology/approach: The research used qualitative research methods to verify information from various sources. For this purpose, a case study method was used, which is particularly important when researching complex phenomena. Findings: The results indicate that social innovations fit into the broadly understood concept of sustainable development, stimulating initiatives in the area of renewable energy sources, as well as contributing to energy savings, increased use of renewable energy systems, and improving the quality of life of residents. Originality/value: The issue addressed in this paper concerns social innovations related to the energy sector, which play an increasingly important role in the context of energy savings and increased use of renewable energy systems (RES). Social innovations are derived from the quality of social dialogue of public, non-profit or private organizations contributing to the solution of social problems. Social innovation plays an important role in many areas including energy, especially in supporting a low-carbon society.

Social innovations can be the answer to contemporary socio-economic problems faced by the world. They are a topic raised by both practitioners and theoreticians from various fields of science. The aim of the research is to discuss the issue of social innovation and indicate the directions of their further research within the framework of Business and Management Science. The article is based on the analysis of domestic and foreign literature. The research was conducted using the desk research method. The method of visualizing scientific landscapes was used. Based on the analysis, we can conclude that the issues of innovation and social innovation are topical. At the same time, the issue of innovation is a concept much more often analysed by researchers than social innovation. Currently, the issue of social innovation is being analysed in three main research areas: entrepreneurship, sustainable development and social impact. This opens up an interesting research field for future analyses within the framework of management sciences.

Purpose: The purpose of this study is to demonstrate the role of social innovation in solving significant and complex problems of the Mazovia region by using the results of research conducted at the university and thus supporting the achievement of sustainable development goals by the university. Design/methodology/approach: The paper describes the results of workshops organized for scientists from all over Poland by 2 universities, i.e. the Warsaw University of Technology and the University of Warsaw. The main objective of the workshops was an attempt to identify studies conducted by their participants, the results of which could contribute to solving specific problems of the region. This publication also refers to the results of the Lean Management in Healthcare project aimed at improving the Polish health care system, and thus also at solving a very important social problem. Findings: Although the nature of these 2 projects was different, they had one objective, which was to use research results in solving important social problems. The first project can be considered as an equivalent of a technological-push model, while the second one corresponds to the market-pull model. Research limitations/implications: The article contains preliminary research related to proposing the use of conducted research to solve important social problems. Practical implications: The article can help to establish cooperation between scientists and other institutions in using the conducted research for a new purpose of solving social problems, but also be an inspiration for further search for them by modifying or planning new research. Social implications: The development of the proposed new directions of using the conducted research may contribute to solving important social problems. This should be the role of research conducted in universities to fulfill all their missions. Originality/value: An attempt to combine the social problems of Mazovia with specific research carried out by the participants of the workshops should be considered a novelty. Many participants admitted that thanks to this workshop they were motivated to continue working on a new way of using the results of their research.

Purpose: the purpose of the elaboration is a review of civic budget projects in cities of Wielkopolska (Greater Poland region) in 2018 with a view to compliance with the smart city concept. Design/methodology/approach: (mandatory) The study was carried out in three stages. At the first stage, websites of all 113 cities in Wielkopolska were reviewed (full study in February-April 2020), which allowed to diagnose the level of implementation of civic budgets in the surveyed population in 2018. At the second stage, information on all correctly submitted project applications (915) and the number of finally selected projects for implementation (279) were collected. In the third stage, ten winning projects were selected, based on using the information and communication technologies (ICT). Due to the difficulty of verifying activities in terms of being smart, a fairly simplified technological criterion was adopted, assuming that in order to achieve the smart city 2.0 phase a systemic approach based on the rapid flow of information between different devices is required. Findings: Only 40% of cities in Greater Poland region created civic budgets which leaves a lot of space for improvements. Projects selected for implementation under civic budgets are still largely of investment nature. A considerable number of tasks related to sport, culture and tourism were reported. At the first stage, smart city projects focus on simple activities improving life, especially in the area of smart living, while attempts to implement system solutions within smart city 2.0+ phases are carried out at this stage only in the Poznań agglomeration. Research limitations/implications: it is worth repeating the research on the quality of projects approved for implementation under civic budgets in every Polish region, with extended understanding of smart city projects beyond the use of ICT. Such a comprehensive list could be helpful for the formulation of urban policy assumptions, which is required at the smart city 2.0 and 3.0 phases. Originality/value The paper fills a research gap regarding the limited resource of publications related to the description and classification of prevailing projects in a regional approach.

Purpose: The aim of this work is to present and implement social innovation management. The aim of the research is to present the expectations of rural residents in relation to the offer of new social services and their attitudes towards the proposition of farms providing care services. The activity of such farms is consistent with the concepts of social innovation. Design/methodology/approach: The analysis uses a questionnaire survey conducted in 2019 and completed by 500 farmers from all across Poland. The surveyed population consisted of farming households in Poland, representing each of the six regions (by NUTS classification). The respondents were members of farming households, most frequently the farm owners. Findings: There is little interest in setting up care farms at present, even though rural residents do recognise the needs of older people. One of the barriers to the development of this new idea is the traditional family model, in which older family members are cared for by younger, fit family members. However, if such a farm were to operate, it would be most important for it to offer professional help with health and care issues. Persons who are considering the possibility of developing their farm to include care activities would need support from the local authorities, especially financial assistance. Research limitations/implications: The sampling scheme applied, and the sufficiently large sample size met the criterion of quota representativeness for the structure of farm households in Poland in terms of subregions, as well as in terms of the gender of adult members of the surveyed households. It was not, however, a representative sample of the total adult population of rural areas. Social implications: Management of social innovations such as care farms requires identification in detail of those factors that support their implementation, as well as those that constitute barriers to their implementation. This article presents these findings in regard to entities considering the introduction of care services, as well as the potential beneficiaries of these services. Originality/value: The research is original due to the early stage of research related to the design of care farms in Poland.

Content available Social innovations as support for Industry 4.0
EN
The main subject for consideration concentrates on the social innovation defined as a tool to support the change related to Industry 4.0. It seems obvious that the Fourth Industrial Revolution transforms social life, the Internet of things (IoT), cloud data, big data, autonomous robots, additive manufacturing, augmented reality, etc., which are listed as basic elements of Industry 4.0. It also transforms the economic sphere, especially work organisation and the labour market. Current prognoses of the possible economic and social impact of digital technology often highlight positive aspects, but we also need to predict and study possible negative consequences. In order to design a 'more satisfactory' social environment that takes into account the needs of the present, we need new ways of social functioning. It is assumed that social innovations can be treated as instruments useful for overcoming challenges posed by Industry 4.0. The analysis will be theoretical, hence such notions as social innovations, Industry 4.0 and others will be defined. This discussion will help to understand and solve future social problems.

The main goal of the paper is to evaluate the existing situation in the area of innovative activity in social enterprises. A secondary research data-based analysis has been made to open up discussions for future research in the area of the level of innovative activity, development of social enterprises and social innovation, which are presented as five mini case studies. As was confirmed by the qualitative description and comparison, social innovations in the mentioned companies are mostly determined by employees (80%) and products (40%). When the level of care about employee-oriented innovations is so high, other areas could be lower (Employee>Product>Enterprise). The added value of this paper is the identification of “Employee-oriented” social innovation, which could solve predominantly social issues in a company, not societal problems as the main point of social enterprises.

Non-governmental organizations encounter some barriers when trying to implement social innovations, such as having limited ability to collaborate with other entities designed to solve social problems or limiting that collaboration to entities which are not interested in implementing such innovations. The aim of this article is to characterize the collaboration between non-governmental organizations from Lubelskie Province and local entities, as well as to evaluate the collaboration in terms of the possibility of implementing social innovations. The study was carried out between October and December 2016 and was based on the following research questions: 1. What kind of social problems do the investigated non-governmental organizations from the rural communes of Lubelskie Province try to solve? 2. What entities are involved in solving those problems? 3. Do the investigated organizations often collaborate with them? 4. Should the collaboration be modified or changed? 5. What entities should increase their participation in the cooperation network? The study involved 108 chairpersons of non-governmental organizations from the rural communes of Lubelskie Province, with whom in-depth interviews with a standardized list of targeted information were carried out. The article presents part of the collected empirical material. Although non-governmental organizations are willing to engage in non-standard, unconventional or atypical projects, they limit their activity to problems regarded as “easier to solve” or to activities that are not likely to solve those problems. In this context, extending nongovernmental organizations' cooperation networks by new local non-governmental organizations (out of the social welfare field) does not seem as desirable as their further collaboration with public sector organizations based on the principle of partnership and oriented at implementing social innovations.

The process of globalization has fundamentally changed the significance of innovations in the development of rural areas. The modernisation paradigm in agriculture has been replaced by the post-productivist regime, which means a change of the innovation order. The linear diffusion of the innovation model is being replaced by a network, endogenous model. The former concentrated on adaptation of innovations and operated at the macro-social level; the latter focuses on processes of social learning of innovation and on the creation of hybrid social networks at the micro-social level. In the modernisation paradigm, innovations were created outside of the agricultural sector. In the endogenous model, the significance of social innovation and participation of different social actors are crucial. The main purpose of the paper is to analyse how the new network model of innovation is being creating and what groups of social actors participate in the process of change.

The article explores the potential of elderly people living in rural areas in terms of implementing social innovations related to care provision. It is argued that seniors should receive greater recognition as important actors organizing care at the local level. Two examples of care cooperatives recently established in Dutch rural communities are used to illustrate the argument. The article is based on a literature review and in-depth interviews conducted in the Netherlands in February 2017. The challenges involved in transferring this model to Poland are also discussed.
