Applied Theatre is an inclusive term used to host a variety of powerful, community-based participatory processes and educational practices. Historically, Applied Theatre practices include Theatre-in-Education (TiE), Theatre-in-Health Education (THE), Theatre for Development (TfD), prison theatre, community theatre, theatre for conflict resolution/reconciliation, reminiscence theatre with elderly people, theatre in museums, galleries and heritage centres, theatre at historic sites, and more recently, theatre in hospitals. In this paper we are positioning the application of recreational dramatic activities with older adults (55+) under Applied Theatre and we are exploring the benefits they offer to the participants. We are concerned that their health and wellbeing in western societies is not prioritized and it is clear that loneliness in particular is a current and ongoing issue. We will present research results from a drama dissertation study that took place in a community hall in the South East England where drama is placed at the core of their practice with old populations. Data was collected by a mixed method (semi-structured interviews and semi-immersive observations) and was critically discussed amongst the authors to conclude that attending recreational drama classes brings a certain degree of happiness, social belonging and improvement of interaction with others to old people’s lives.

In this article, through selected examples of local theatre activity in rural environments in Slovenia, the author describes how and in what way the actors come together to draw material for their vernacular theatre performance. Their own heritage, with which the entire community is familiar, since they grew up and lived with it, thus becomes an inspiration to creators. It is for this reason that people draw on heritage for materialisation through staging. The article shows how, in seeking identity, the materialisation of past events is carried out at different levels of theatre-making. It tries to provide an insight into how performing such an act affects the life of the entire community and how it reflects on a daily basis.

On “Ordinary People” at the Independence March: An Ethnography of a Street DemonstrationThis article provides an overview of the narratives and practices of participants of the Independence March, an annual street demonstration held in Warsaw, organised by nationalist associations. The study attempts to determine whether the event creates a sense of community among the participants and, if so, what kind of community it is: what symbols and values it refers to, how the participants talk about it and how they practise and experience it.

The article is concerned with the concept of sustainable development treated as an essential mechanism of security culture. The author emphasises how important it is for the implementation of the concept to be inspired from the bottom up in the social aspect of local communities. Today, the sense of community seems to stand in opposition to the institutionalised civil society. A developmental project, in order to result in some degree of balance, should take into consideration such components of security culture as support for the poor, security of existence for future generations or a transparent delineation of the human-nature relation. The author believes that this requires a continuous promotion of lifestyles and policies leading to societies attaining self-sufficiency, a combination of theory with practice and the introduction of good, proven theory. The article features pragmatism which is meant to be consistent with the local social activism. It presents the concept of sustainable development, at the same time indicating that its requirements should be treated as practical instructions which come in useful in the transformation of ethical rules into instructions which may prove helpful in particular activities conducted on the local scale and which are aimed at solving social issues due to the efforts to increase security culture.

The memory of Polish and Jewish relationships is one of the most intriguing issues within sociology and social anthropology. The present study focuses on neighbour relationships and collective memory. By exploring memories of witnesses of the events predating World War II, this paper demonstrates that the cohabitation of Poles and Jews did not generate community-building ties. Due to the extensive cultural alienation of Jews, the spatial proximity was not sufficient for close relationships to flourish. Rather, these groups predominantly showed limited community bonds, marked by a tolerance for otherness that did not translate into solidary actions. Poles remember that Jews were somewhere close but their otherness prevented them from having more intimate, constructive neighbour relationships. Based on witnesses’ memories, the paper demonstrates that the memory of relationships between individuals is more positive than the memory of relationships between the two communities. Built upon stereotypes, the latter reinforced the negative image of Jews as a community despite positive experiences with individual Jews who were close neighbours.

This article discusses the book Theatre and Citizenship: The History of a Practice by David Wiles (Cambridge 2011), which inspires reflection on the historical and current role of theater practice in the promotion of civic ideas. The critical analysis is initiated by questions about the changing nature of social bonds in the age of digital communication. In the perspective of today’s atomized society, the recognition of the communal character of the aesthetic and ethical experience of theater appears somewhat archaic. However, it is important from a historical point of view, demonstrating the sources of beliefs about theatricality, which have determined audience expectations of the performing arts to this day. Wiles’s historical presentations are an inspiring starting point for a critical discussion on the politicality of the theater and the significance of its institutional organisation.

Ecological safety is one of the fundamental types of safety. It is a kind of safety in which every matter (including man) comes into direct contact at every moment of existence because it relates to the ecosystem. People are both creators and recipients of this safety. The subject matter therefore is about how we threaten the environment and about the ways in which the environment generates these threats. This is the reason why the principles of sustainable development are so pertinent in every human endevour. Unfortunately, man — the creator has been having an increasingly destructive influence causing a mechanical feedback of threats that endanger man — the recipient. Under these premises, the cultural education of ecological safety is a task of paramount importance. In the process of creating such a culture local communities have an unquestionable importance and volunteer fire departments constitute an integral aspect in such communities. It should be noted that both legal and sociological conditions give VFD a unique role which refers to the enormous potential of impact on the culture of ecological security. This applies in particular to the development of sensitivity, awareness and educational activities. It is worth emphasizing the fact that activities directed inwardly to a given VFD automatically affect local society, as members of a given VFD belong to the local community. External actions addressed to non members but to other people gain importance and effectiveness when cooperating with other entities of a given local society. So the potential of Volunteer Fire Departments and their impact on the culture of ecological safety is undeniable. At the same time, however, it is “only” a potential that needs to be transformed into concrete actions. What we are facing is an oppurtunity dependant on the readiness of man being the creator and recipient.

The sense of community is recognised as a key category favouring the development of local communities, conducive to the growth of social activity, supporting the activation of internal resources of the group in the field of solving social problems. The main goal of the article is to show the possibility of using the assumptions of the theory of community-relatedness in pedagogical research. The author indicates how much and to what extent the sense of community is complementing the area of research of contemporary local environments. The analysis of research on the sense of community conducted by American and European researchers determines possible areas and directions of research with particular emphasis on social participation in the local space.

Every organization which offers products or services wishes to communicate with their customers in the most effective way. This kind of communication is based on proper selection of target groups which are identified in the process of market segmentation. Therefore, it is very important to ask the question to whom the message is to be directed and what kind of a message we want to convey. This article describes the selection criteria for target groups in the Centre of Competence for Novel Infrastructure of Workable Applications (C2NIWA) which is organized in the structures of the Gdansk University of Technology. It is a place that provides advanced IT platforms for the production of various types of applications. C2NIWA users have access to the most current knowledge in this field, advisory services, and tools to collaborate on IT projects. They needed to be divided into target groups and the communication methods were adapted to their specifics. The result of this process is the establishment of appropriate associations with the brand. The article presents the results of a short research showing what kind of associations were successfully built in one of the target groups by using a system of visual identification – the logo of the C2NIWA.

Facebook allows the transmission of information to the world. This gives a sense of power, control over life, independence and helps to express yourself and to share with others. Facebook allows, above all, to have access to unlimited amounts of information. At the same time, however, does not translate to build deeper relationships with people. Besides many values must therefore also pay attention to the dangers posed by social networking. We should pay attention to the risk of physical and mental health. One of the most serious problems seems to be alienation. It becomes necessary, therefore, to develop rules for the use of Facebook and other social media.

The main aim of this article is to reflect on the status of ecomuseums in China. There have been both ecomuseums and discourse about them for many years in China. However, despite the existence of academic literature on ecomuseums and therefore to the general theory of ecomuseums, from some points of view Chinese ecomuseums do not seem to be aligned with general ecomuseum principles. This article reflects both on how well ecomuseums in China fit the ecomuseum characteristics defined by the theory and, ultimately, on what we can learn from the Chinese experience. Our discussion is developed on the basis of both the existing academic literature and interviews conducted by the authors.

The aim of this article is to analyse cohousing in the context of Ray Oldenburg’s theory of a third place. The author argues that cohousing, which promotes the idea of deep social relations in connection with respect for individualism and sustainable consumption and prosumption, can be viewed as a new form of socialization similar to Oldenburg’s concept of the third place. The first part outlines ideas underlying the concept of a third place, while the second part focuses on the assumptions of cohousing and demand conditions for its development. This theoretical article continues the author’s considerations about the concept of third places in the era of globalization.

One of the main themes in the 20th century disagreements about man is the question of freedom, which seems to be the most complicated and, at the same time, intriguing phenomenon in the characteristics of the human subject. Karol Wojtyła suggests positioning freedom not only in the horizon of the irreducibility of the person as a subject, who autonomously decides about self and gives direction to own activities, but also in the area of interpersonal community. Being a person as a free subject appears as “in relation to” or “referring to” (something, somebody). We respond to values by making choices. The world of values is extremely rich and varied. It also encompasses other people, who are in relation to one another. Therefore, to be a person means more than just to be for oneself, in oneself and by oneself. To be a person is to be in relation to other people and to values. The community-oriented character of freedom is focused on in the philosophical writings by Karol Wojtyła, who on numerous occasions emphasizes the fact that a person may reach fulfilment through another human being, in a community with others, without losing anything of own subjectivity or individuality. Wojtyła wishes to deal with the problem of one of the fundamental conditions upon the fulfilment of which the community I-You may become a reality of subjects fulfilment. In order to achieve this purpose, Wojtyła undertakes analyses of participation, solidarity, community, whose proper specification in the perception of freedom aims at emphasizing the sense of man’s existence together with other human beings, on the one hand, and the purpose of man’s earthly journey, on the other hand.

A sustainable development of housing environment depends on socioeconomical context. Interest towards locality in western countries has a completely different basis than in the post-communist ones. Social capital, which shows, e.g. in trust, as well as ecological awareness are totally different. We do not belong to saturated societies. There is a distinct issue of community shaping of housing environment here. Although eco-friendly housing do emerge, intentional building of community bonds (characteristic, e.g., of the idea of cohousing) is rare. There are many ecological farms, but eco-villages do not arise. Concordant communities and housing cooperatives are also rare. In order to get to know the kind of development of a sustainable housing environment to be promoted, not only a purpose must be determined, but appropriate means need to be adjusted to local capabilities.

The article opens with an exposition of the notion of solidarity as an interper-sonal link, in opposition to the conventional association of individuals. In the first instance, such solidarity characterizes the Eucharistic communion which embraces those who feed from the same Bread and Wine, and is not understood as a passive effect of the sacrament, but as moral virtue which springs up from the cooperation with Jesus the Redeemer. Secondly, solidarity assimilates the life of a man to that of his Saviour which is echoed with the words of St. Paul: “and yet I am alive; yet it is no longer I, but Christ living in me” (Ga. 2, 20). And, thirdly, solidarity, which finds its basis in the Eucharist, can not expect its fulfilment in this earthly life of man, but only in reaching the glorious floor of heaven.

The modification of the content of Article 6k, para. 4 of the Act on Maintaining Cleanliness and Order in Municipalities made by the above said amendment raised doubts about the possibility of introducing reductions of fees for municipal waste management for families with many children. Such reductions were granted by the councils of municipalities (cities) on the basis of the amended provision. The author also presents conclusions de lege ferenda introduced in the Polish legal system of provisions enabling the use of incentives for families with many children. The analysis covers in particular the provisions of the Act on the Charter of the Large Family.

The emergence of the notion “conservative revolution” in Polish scientific literature as well as in the public debate leads to a comparison with the conservative revolution in the Republic of Weimar. The representatives of this German intellectual movement in the inter-war period induced ideological climate, which favoured the rise of fascism. Therefore, an analysis of the ideas of the representatives of Polish conservatism may be helpful in seeking an answer to the question why and to what extent Polish rightwing “revolutionaries“ draw inspiration from the German conservative ideology. This also includes the question about the responsibility for the political state of Poland and of Europe.
