In this paper, we give some reasons for claiming that there are no local communities in the restricted sense or local self-government in Belarus. However, public discourse and every-day argumentations are possible only within the networks of local communities. Therefore, there is the problem of deficit of logical practices in Belarusian social life. We propose a probable solution of that problem.

The study presents new results of the ethnographic research conducted in the environment of Slovak minorities settled in the so-called Dolna zem ('Lower Land'), a geographical region covering the parts of Hungary, Romania, Serbia and Croatia. The goal of the research was to map various phenomena of traditional culture, the characteristic component of which is the local cuisine. The study presents a picture of culinary culture in the 'Lower Land' as a part of the complex of socio-cultural life of Slovak communities in which cooking represents a form of social activity, maintained and determined by the local culture. In her research, the authoress attempts to find correlations between characteristic signs - symbols of alimentation and their connection to material and spiritual contexts of local cultures - in order to reveal the 'language of alimentation' used by the Slovaks in the 'Lower Land'.

A reflection on globalization being one of the most discussed phenomena of the contemporary social life, leads to the legitimate conviction that this problem deserves a permanent diagnosis updated in the context of continual transformations taking place. Assessment of the globalization process in the context of the criteria developed within full-fledged democracies allows perceiving in the process constant challenges related to undertaking individual and social effort in order to minimize threats and maximize opportunities so that the transformations of the globalization era increasingly take on the nature of developmental changes. Furthermore, this reflection includes the issue of responsibility which should gradually change from scattered, weakened and fading into strong, conscious and creative in the realm of local communities as well as global reality.

To begin with, the author introduces features of private life friendship. From that perspective, he observes “friendly” elements of social life. He describes a continuous spectrum of communities – from the ones which are united by the highest number of positive ties to those full of fight and hatred. The author points out that even in a fight to death one feels some remnants of positive ties with an enemy as a human being. He calls this phenomenon “a friendship with an enemy”. Even a little experience of “the friendship with an enemy” gives power to use possibilities of friendly relations with a stranger – the most common type of human we meet in social life. The author points out that high culture, as well as social climate are the conditions of developing positive ties.

The characteristics of social structures of Bell Beakers and Trzciniec Complex in north-eastern part of Central Europe is presented in the paper. The social life of these groupings was shaped by competition between particular descent-based groups as well as individuals and their families for prestige, status, power and wealth. The key factor setting social behaviour in order and integrating the group was kinship, which was related to the cultural system of spouse selection. The ranking of these communities can be described as moderate (Bell Beakers) and minimal (Trzciniec Complex). Although in the case of northern Beakers (Iwno Culture) it exhibited a tendency to growth, it never reached the level of stratification. The process of emancipation of the individual, which was very advanced in the case of Bell Beakers came to a halt among the communities of Trzciniec Complex. In the later 'Trzciniec' structures the processes of depersonalisation of the grave furnishing, deindividualisation and increasing collectivism can be observed.

The motif of ball occurs in Slovak literature quite often. However, it does most frequently in the works written at the end of the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century. It is no Slovak specific feature, though. Ball was almost a constant motif in European literature of the 19th century. A debutante's situation, where her maiden ball is viewed as an admission to the society, can be found in L. N. Tolstoy's novels War and Peace (1863-1869) and Anna Karenina (1873-1878). In the Slovak social novel, a genre popular at that time, the motif in question is not only referred to as a special occasion but also as an ideological tool. Importance was attached to socializing with other fellow countrymen and consciously building a patriotic society. While the works of literary realism include scenes reflecting a real ball culture as well as some undesirable elements of ideology and glorification, the works of literary modernism, especially new romanticism, are dominated by personal experience and individual emotions. This motif contains various contradictory meanings directly related to social-historical and stylistic changes. The specific semantic space of ball and its specific themes make it possible to oscillate between tradition and innovation, reality and transcendence, along with a different modality of message and authors' narrative strategies.

The article analyses the differences between theoretical concepts of social policy models: US-liberal and the Euro-social, according to the classification of Gustav Esping-Andersen. The Liberal social policy model assumes reduced state interference in social life. The Social model offers the citizens a broad range of social security. Contradictory solutions within both models are presented on the social policy of the United States and Sweden. Selected areas analysed include health care system, social aid programmes and provisions of the labour market. The fundamental institutions of social policy in the United States are private market and family. By contrast, in Sweden it is the state that acts as most important social policy institution and provides extensive care from cradle to grave. Anyway, both the United States and Sweden are withdrawing from the classic models. In the first case it means increasing state involvement in the conduct of social policy. The second one is associated with increased private sector participation in providing social services and greater participation of the citizens.

According to Cyprian K. Norwid poetry should not be primarily an expression of emotions and moods, but should concern social, moral, or historical issues. The ideas that Norwid expressed in his works, often breaking literary and linguistic conventions, are still valid. His critique of contemporary European culture and Polish society is also important and his ideals of patriotism and Christianity are still valid. Faith should be rational and open, ecumenical. Patriotism is not only the memory of tradition, but a creative undertaking which aims at the moral transformation and liberation of the nation. Social life requires a serious attitude, responsibility, and conscience. Norwid’s world is seen as an organic whole, which combines faith and reason, ordinary life and the nurture of values, love and struggle, the sublime and the ordinary.

This paper is concerned with researching the existence of a university and its influence on a small town. The object of investigation was the Technical University (formerly the University of Forestry and Woodworking) and the town Zvolen. The author studied where, how, and by means of what and whom the university was presented in the town and perceived by the town's inhabitants. She investigated the university in the broader context of the town, with emphasis on the university versus town interaction. The author focused on the 'inner' and especially the 'outer' life of the university, its cultural, economic, social capital and their presentation. In this paper the university is perceived as an institution which apart from its inductive-educational, scientific-research and cultural-social functions also fulfils a function of cultural reproduction. Simultaneously it is a bearer of socio-cultural values and traditions, status rankings, and the most varied bonds, communicative relations and meanings. The paper also points to the reasons for the emergence, preconditions, formation and establishment of the university in the town, which are reflected not only in the town's socio-spatial structure but also in the cultural capital of its inhabitants (for example, the educational structure). Contacts and social networks of the town's inhabitants with the university are constructed also through the medium of the TU's employees, who are themselves mainly Zvolen inhabitants, and by a dynamic group of students. An important indicator is also the economic capital which the university represents in a small town. It is expressed in employment opportunities and in the form of other material resources. The existence of the university also brings the town's inhabitants a specific cultural-social and educational dimension which is, as regards the school's orientation, different from other towns. The activities which the school and the students carry out (erecting maypoles, the folk festival, lectures, exhibitions and sporting activities) are not realized exclusively on the university grounds but are rather part of the urban space, and the town's inhabitants take part in them deliberately or casually. The urban society views them positively, as characteristic and typical of Zvolen, which is identified with them.
