The paper discusses the problem of quick acquire height data for calculation of escarpment stability. In past the slope of profile was obtainedfrom classical land survey methods (like Total Station, GNSS, etc.), carto- metric measurement on maps or measurements based on a Digital Terrain Modelfrom aerial photography. Now we have a new method that is Airborne Laser Scanning (LiDAR-ALS). In 2011-2014 almost all country was measured in this method. The declared accuracy of height measurement on the durable surfaces is about 0.10-0.15 m. Author compared this method with classical method Global Navigation Satellite System - Real Time Network (GNSS-RTN) on two wooded and bushy areas. The comparison was based on the measurement characteristic points on the profiles and acquisition of height data from LiDAR-ALS data. Data in this method were obtained in two ways: from point cloud and from DTM createdfrom this point cloud. In the next step, height differences were calculated and these data were subjected to basic statistical calculations. The result of the study was a mean error of height data from LiDAR-ALS and conclusions about its usefulness in acquire height data for calculation of escarpment stability.

The aim of the present study is to determine the effects of the BAY 11-7082, a nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-B) inhibitor, on endothelin-1 (ET-1) induced lung edema, the level of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and tumor necrosis factor alpha (TNF-) in the lungs. Experiments were carried out on adult male Wistar-Kyoto rats. The animals were divided into 4 groups: Group I: saline-treated control; Group II: saline followed by ET-1 (12.5 µg/kg b.w., i.v.); Group III: BAY 11-7082 (10 mg/kg b.w., i.v.) administered one hour before saline; Group IV: BAY 11-7082 (10 mg/kg b.w., i.v.) administered 1 hour before ET-1 (12.5 µg/kg b.w., i.v.). Injection of ET-1 alone showed a significant (P<0.001) increase in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) level as well as a decrease (P<0.01) in GSH level and GSH/GSSG ratio (P<0.02). BAY 11-7082 significantly decreased TBARS (P<0.01) and H2O2 (P<0.05) level as well as improved the redox status (P<0.02) in the lungs. BAY 11-7082 also prevented ET-1 induced lung edema (P<0.05). The concentration of TNF- (P<0.02) and p65 subunit of NF-B signaling compound (P<0.001) was increased in the presence of ET-1, while BAY 11-7082 decreased both TNF- level (P<0.05) and p65 subunit concentration (P<0.01). Our results indicate that BAY 11-7082 plays a protective role in ET-1 induced oxidative lung injury. It successfully prevents lung edema as well as ROS and TNF- overproduction. Our results also highlight the important role of the NF-B pathway in ET-1 induced lung injury and ROS overproduction.

The aim of this research was to show superiority of using real geometries in simulations of blood fl ow through cardiovascular system. Our model compared blood fl ow through an abdominal part of aorta reconstructed with a use of data from an AngioTK research with the 3DDoctor software to geometries with the same diameters at inlet and outlet as mention before but created only with the Gambit 2.2.30 software without data from AngioTK. Blood fl ow simulations were prepared with the Fluent 6.2.16 software. Calculations of fl ow through a real geometry allows to obtain realistic results of values connected with process of blood fl ow. Results showed that calculations blood fl ow through a virtual geometry lasted two times longer than for a real geometry. Mesh for a real geometry consist about 600.000 elements and for a virtual geometry about 900.000 elements. Wall shear stress and blood velocity was higher for a real geometry and closer to that in human organism. It was shown that calculating a virtual geometry vessel was to big simplifi cation when investigating blood fl ow through a vessel. Application of mathematical models based on real geometries gives more realistic results than artifi cial geometries. Virtual models have lots of simplifi cations which results are far away from expectations. Simplifi cations depend on the model that is used.

A recently found “bradyodont” holocephalian tooth from bituminous shales of the Kowala Quarry, south−western Holy Cross Mountains, Poland, dated as the middle Famennian Palmatolepis trachytera conodont Zone, is described. In spite of its resemblance to the forms often attributed to Helodus, the tooth is referred to as Psephodus cf. magnus (Agassiz, 1838), and supposed to represent the anterior part of the dentition, based on a partly articulated specimen of Psephodus from the Carboniferous of Scotland. The analysis of early helodonts and psephodonts, and other Famennian chondrichthyan crushing teeth, shows numerous similarities in tooth−base structure, such as the reduction of lingual basal extension, loss of articulation devices, development of numerous nutritive foramina, and the tendency to fusion between the teeth in a tooth−family. Based on these shared characters, close phylogenetic relationships between the Protacrodontoidea, Hybodontoidea, and the Holocephali are postulated.

Increasing production of free radicals in organisms is one of the putative mechanisms by which a extremely low frequency magnetic field (ELF-MF) may affect biological systems. The present study was designated to assess if ELF-MF applied in the magnetotherapy, affects generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) in heart tissue and antioxidant capacity of plasma according to its working time. The experiments were performed on 3 groups of animals: group I - control; group II - exposed to 40 Hz, 7 mT, 30 min/day for 14 days (this field is commonly applied in magnetotherapy); group III - exposed to 40 Hz, 7 mT, 60 min/day for 14 days. Control rats were housed in a separate room without exposure to ELF-MF. Immediately after the last exposure, blood was taken from the tail vein and hearts were removed under anesthesia. The effect of the exposure to ELF-MF on oxidative stress was assessed on the basis of the measurements of thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), total free sulphydryl groups (-SH groups) and reduced glutathione (GSH) concentrations in heart homogenates. The total antioxidant capacity of plasma was measured using ferric reducing ability method (FRAP). Exposure to ELF-MF (40 Hz, 7 mT, 30 min/day for 2 weeks) did not significantly alter tissue TBARS, H2O2, total free -SH groups, reduced glutathione (GSH) and total antioxidant capacity of plasma. By contrast, ELF-MF with the same frequency and induction but used for 60 min/day for 14 days caused significant increase in TBARS and H2O2 concentration (P<0.01) and decrease in the concentration of GSH (P<0.05) and total free -SH groups in heart homogenates. Moreover, exposure of rats to ELF-MF (40 Hz, 7 mT, 60 min/day for 2 weeks) resulted in the decrease of plasma antioxidant capacity. Our results indicate that effects of ELF-MF on ROS generation in the heart tissue and antioxidant capacity of plasma depend on its working time.

The lower Frasnian (transitans Zone with Ancyrodella priamosica = MN 4 Zone) rhythmic basin succession of marly limestones and shales (upper Szydłówek Beds) at Kostomłoty, western Holy CrossMts., Central Poland, contains a record of the transgressive-hypoxic Timan Event in this drowned part of southern Laurussian shelf. The unique facies consists of organic-rich marly shales and a distinctive pyritic, goniatite level, 1.6mthick. The faunal assemblage is dominated by pyritized shells of diminutivemollusks with cephalopods (including goniatites Epitornoceras and Acanthoclymenia), buchioline bivalves (Glyptohallicardia) and styliolinids. This interval is marked by moderately low Th/U ratios and pyrite framboid size distributions suggestive of dysoxic rather than permanent euxinic conditions. The scarcity of infauna and bioturbation resulted in finely laminated sedimentary fabrics, as well as the low diversity of the presumed pioneer benthos (mostly brachiopods). In the topmost part of the Szydłówek Beds, distinguished by the Styliolina coquina interbedded between limestone-biodetrital layers, the above geochemical proxies and C-isotope positive shift indicate a tendency to somewhat increased bottom oxygen deficiency and higher carbon burial rate linked with a bloom of pelagic biota during high-productivity pulse. The geochemical and community changes are a complex regional record of the initial phase of a major perturbation in the earth-ocean system during a phase of intermittently rising sea level in the early to middle Frasnian, and associated with the highest positive C-isotope ratios of the Devonian.

The paper discusses the problem of determining the thickness of a laterite cover using electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) in a selected area of the Seram Island in Indonesia. Seram Island lies in the tropical zone between the Seram and Banda seas. The laterite covers are rich in nickel, cobalt, iron and other metals. Concentrations of these metals in the laterites are high enough to form economic deposits. A significant part of the report concerns the measurement technique (ERT method) in difficult climatic (high humidity and temperature) and topographic conditions (equatorial jungle with significant variations in elevation) and the methods of processing and interpretation of the acquired data. The problem seems very interesting, because geophysical prospecting is currently more and more often conducted in poorly accessible regions of the world. Additionally, there are no sufficient and commonly available publications that would allow us to get acquainted with local measurement problems by potential contractors of similar geophysical investigations. The primary result of the geophysical survey was to determine the electrical resistivity of bedrock and laterite. This was the basis for the development of sections of electrical resistive distribution for the ERT profiles, which enabled to estimate the depth to the crystalline basement and the laterite thickness. It also facilitated to produce a map of laterite thickness, which may be an important material to develop the concept of searching and mining of nickel and cobalt ore.

Thousands of Late Carnian (Late Triassic) charophyte gyrogonites belonging to four species [Stellatochara germanica KOZUR & REINHARDT, Stomochara starozhilovae (KISIELEVSKY), Stenochara kisielevskyi BILAN and Porochara triassica (SAIDAKOVSKY)] occur in the beds around the vertebrate-bearing level at Krasiejów, SW Poland. The abundant and wellpreserved gyrogonites generally attest to fossilization in situ. Information about the habitat of recent charophytes is useful for reconstruction of their past environments. The factors limiting the habitat of modern charophytes suggests that these algae, and other micro- and macrofauna sedimented within the bone-bearing bed, lived in a shallow, freshwater environment (probably lacustrine). Above the bone bed, there is a rapid drop in gyrogonite abundance. This could have been caused by changes in environmental conditions: increase in salinity, or increase in water energy. The preliminary mineralogical data suggest arid to semi-arid climate.

Lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is a gram-negative bacterial endotoxin and a major factor that contributes to multiple organ failure, including heart injury. Myocardial dysfunction in septic shock depends on the presence of proinflammatory cytokines and reactive oxygen/nitrogen species. In this study, the effect of early administration of an antioxidant, -lipoic acid (LA) on lipid peroxidation, hydrogen peroxide (H2O2), sulphydryl groups (-SH groups) and total protein concentration and the glutathione redox system was evaluated in the heart homogenates obtained from LPS-induced endotoxic shock rats (Escherichia coli 026:B6, 30 mg/kg, i.v.). The animals were treated intravenously with saline or LA (60 mg/kg or 100 mg/kg i.v.) 30 min after LPS injection. Five hours after LPS, LA or saline administration, the animals were sacrificed and their hearts were isolated for measurements. Injection of LPS alone resulted in the development of shock and oxidative stress that was indicated by a significant increase in thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS) and H2O2 concentrations, a decrease in concentration of -SH groups and reduced glutathione, and by decrease in glutathione redox ratio reduced glutathione (GSH)/oxidized glutathione (GSSG) in the heart. Administration of LA after the LPS challenge resulted in an increase in the sulfhydryl group content and a decrease in TBARS and H202 concentrations in the heart as compared with the LPS group. In addition, the treatment of LA after LPS challenge significantly decreased the level of GSSG, increased the level of GSH in heart homogenates resulting in an increase of the GSH/GSSG ratio compared with the LPS group. There was no difference in oxidative stress reduction between 60 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg doses. These results indicate that early administration of LA is highly effective in dampening endotoxin-induced oxidative stress in the heart and in improving the glutathione redox system. This study supports the idea that -LA is a free radical scavenger and a potent antioxidant.
