We examined winter social behaviour of the snow vole Chionomys nivalis Martins, 1842, a rock-dwelling microtine found principally in high-mountain biotopes. We conducted dyadic encounters among wild-caught C. nivalis to determine patterns of intraspecific tolerance and the degree of aggressiveness between and within sexes during wintering periods. Our data show a high frequency of agonistic behaviours in all social encounters. Male pairs spent less time being aggressive than female pairs but more time in investigative behaviours. In contrast, the intensity of aggression displayed during interactions was significantly higher in male-male encounters than in female-female encounters, with an intermediate level of aggression in male-female encounters. The low degree of social tolerance found seems to be in agreement with the available data on the social organization of this species and further suggests that individuals may not spatially associate during over-wintering periods. Although both males and females were socially intolerant, the different patterns observed between the sexes may underlie different strategies.

The article aims at showing what role philosophical education should fulfill in the present-day world. One of the main causes of cultural, scientific and technological development of the Western civilization can be seen in the close cooperation between philosophy, theology, science and humanities. Although modern science functions independently from philosophy, it is nevertheless possible that even today fundamental theoretical problems in science and speculative philosophical problems are closely connected and mutually influence each other.Characteristic for present-day world is the broad access to education and information, but new means of information which we possess today are also used as means of manipulation. Philosophical education can fulfill the role of a defense mechanism against manipulation because it leads to the development of critical attitude and to the very broad understanding of natural and social world. Only uncompromising desire for truth, broad understanding of natural and social world, the habit of critical thinking could in an important way influence the development of true tolerance and harmony in the social life in the present-day world.

The present study aimed to explain the relationship between critical thinking and social tolerance among the students of the faculty of psychology and educational sciences of Zahedan University. The study methodology was descriptive-correlational. 294 students were selected from the faculty of psychology and educational sciences of Zahedan University in BA and MA courses by the stratified sampling method by Morgan Table. For data collection, a researcher-built questionnaire of social tolerance and the critical thinking questionnaire by Ricketts were applied and the reliability of these two questionnaires by Cronbach’s alpha was 0.84 and 0.85, respectively. The results of the correlation test showed that there was a positive and significant relationship between critical thinking and political, ethnic, nationality toleration, toleration against coverage and relationship and total toleration. The stepwise regression analysis showed that critical thinking dimensions explained the variance of social tolerance.
