Until relatively recently the impact of emotions on language learning has often been ignored and “the nature and contribution of positive emotions and beneficial emotional states deserves further attention” (Bown & White, 2010, p. 433). Our study focuses on a flexible language learning system that combines different elements: work in a virtual learning environment, group work, counselling sessions and a logbook. One of its objectives is to help students progress towards autonomy—defined as “the capacity to take control over one’s own learning” (Benson, 2011, p. 2)—in their learning of English. The logbook has been shown to be useful in helping students become conscious of the new role they have to play in such a system (Chateau & Zumbihl, 2012). A discourse analysis of 100 logbooks from the 2012-2013 cohort of students showed that the traces of emotions they contained could enable us to identify important steps in the development of autonomy, as well as make hypotheses on the links between emotions, students’ self-efficacy and the development of learner autonomy.

Background: Strategies used by patients to promote health (SUPPH), 29-item self-report instrument, is used to measure self-care self-efficacy in patients. The subject is asked to rate the degree of confidence in carrying out specific self-care behavior, mainly psychological side of self-care. Original authors found 3-factor and 4-factor structure. However, no data can be found on its performance in Slovak culture. Hence this study aimed to assess reliability, factor structure and validity of SUPPH in Slovak population. Method: A total of 162 undergraduate students completed interviews that included SUPPH, General Self-efficacy Scale and The Self-Care Self-Regulation Questionnaire. Internal consistency was measured by Cronbach's alfa. The factor structure was made by using exploration factor analysis. The validity was studied by correlations the main instrument with related instruments, which asses self-care and self-efficacy. Results: Cronbach alfa reliability coefficients surpassed the 0.70 criteria. A principal component factor analyses with orthogonal varimax rotation identified new 3-factors (positive attitude – nine items, decision for better life – five items, coping with stress and anxiety – eight items) structure. Seven items were deleted. The General Self-efficacy and The Self-Care Self-Regulation Questionnaire correlated positively to all factors SUPPH. Especially psychological self-care correlated strong positively with all SUPPH subscales. Conclusion: We became new Slovak version of Strategies used by patients to promote health (SUPPH-SK). Finely 22-items are more evenly distributed into new 3-factor structure.

Our study describes the relationship of second language learning motivation, self-efficacy, and anxiety; that is, how motivation, cognition, and affect might interact during the process of second language learning. Questionnaire data were collected from 236 Hungarian students studying at various secondary schools. Structural equation modeling was used to investigate the proposed circular relationship of students’ motivated learning behavior, language learning experience, self-efficacy beliefs, and both debilitating and facilitating anxiety. Our results indicate that: (a) the process of motivation is complex and influenced by other individual difference (ID) variables, and (b) the investigation of ID variables in constellations rather than in isolation seems to be more fruitful in understanding language learner differences.

The aims of this study were to: (1) compare the Heart Rate (HR) and Rating Perceived Exertion (RPE) in training with self-selected and imposed loads, and (2) associate the OMNI-Walk/Run and Borg scales with self-selected and imposed loads, both on a treadmill. Ten trained men (20.3 ± 2.0 years, 75.6 ± 9.8 kg, 175.1 ± 5.1 cm) participated in a training program with self-selected load (time and speed individually preferred) and another with imposed load (even self-selected time and speed 10% higher). The HR and RPE were measured, every minute of training, by the OMNIWalk/ Run and Borg scales. No significant differences were found in the HR and RPE between training sessions. The correlation between the OMNI-Walk/Run and Borg scales showed a moderate association (r = 0.55) in training with self-selected load and a strong association in imposed load (r = 0.79). In this study, self-selected load induced a suboptimal stimulus to elicit favorable organic adaptations. Moreover, high correlation of OMNI Walk/Run and Borg scales with the imposed load showed that the greater the load of training the best were answers of RPE.

The aim of the study was to establish the relationship between stress at work, self-efficacy belief and burnout syndrome in fire-fighters. 100 subjects participated in the study. The mean of age was 34 years. The Perceived Job Stress Characteristics Questionnaire, Generalized Self-Efficacy Scale and Maslach Burnout Inventory were used in the study. Positive relationship between stress at work, and two dimensions of burnout syndrome: emotional exhaustion and depersonalization was revealed. Self-efficacy belief appeared factor differentiating level of emotional exhaustion but only in fire-fighters with low level of occupational stress.

Over the last forty years, since Bandura (1977) introduced the concept of self-efficacy, there have been a constantly growing number of research publications using this concept. Its early development resulted in the creation of a new construct of entrepreneurial self-efficacy (ESE) proposed for the first time by (Chen et al. 1998). Since then, many different groups of research concerning ESE have emerged - one of them is the study of ESE of students. With regard to this particular group, a recent tendency to study ESE in a pre-post setting can be noticed i.a. Karlsson, Moberg (2013), Shinnar, Hsu, Powell (2014), Ismail, Zain, Zulihar (2015). Due to the increasing interest in entrepreneurial self-efficacy research and the need to fill the gap in the literature with regard to European post-communist countries (and particularly – Poland) (Drnovsek, Wincent, Cardon, 2010), in this paper we present a brief overview of ESE research and pose the question whether ESE of Polish students can serve as an early predictor of their subsequent entrepreneurial activities, potentially leading them to nascent entrepreneurship. The research material was collected from the SEAS (Survey on Entrepreneurial Attitudes of Students) Project carried out at the Faculty of Management and Economics, Gdańsk University of Technology. The research sample was composed of 72 students - ESE was measured in a pre-post setting using a single item based on a five-point Likert scale. One of the research conclusions is that ESE manifested by student-beginners seems to influence their later entrepreneurial behavior in a statistically significant way - potentially making ESE a valuable early predictor of future entrepreneurial activities. In the concluding part of the study, limitations are discussed and future study developments are indicated.

Self-efficacy conceived as a belief in man's ability to organize and perform activities that are necessary to achieve results becomes an important factor in human performance. The nature of this construct is composed of the internal resources in terms of skills and resources from the environment, leading to understand human as a social being. Based on the need for differentiation of this concept to other constructs and understanding its importance in the individual system activities, this study describes self-efficacy in terms of its definition and sources. Emphasis on clarification of understanding of self-efficacy as an important factor of human behavior may lie in its definition and operational model clearer substantiation, rather than in using this term in the narrow context of specific research.

Introduction. Self-efficacy is one of the most important determinants of behavior of adults and adolescents. The degree of self confidence attributable to oneself in order to overcome the difficulties of life and to achieve one's goals, both in healthy subjects and patients, determines the size of the effort and perseverance in taking action. According to The World Health Organization till 2020, chronic diseases will be the major cause of disability, and can be one of the most costly health problems. Therapy of chronic illness on the threshold of adult life requires, in addition to a comprehensive medical approach, the patient's active participation in the implementation of the treatment process. Therefore, the potential of young people entering adult life with the burden of diagnosed disease may indicate the direction of education of the chronically ill adolescents. Aim. The aim of this study was to assess the potential of young people, both healthy and diagnosed with a chronic disease, to overcome difficulties of life. Material and methods. The study used a questionnaire and KompOs scale (Personal Competence Scale), a standardized test in the field of Health Psychology. The study included 80 subjects aged 15-18 years, 40 patients with inflammatory bowel disease treated in the IP-CZD in Warsaw and 40 healthy students from Rzeszow. The study used a questionnaire and KompOs scale (Personal Competence Scale), a standardized test in the field of Health Psychology. It allows the evaluation of such features in subjects such as strength and endurance needed to take action and then to continue it. Results. For young people despite of their health state the age of majority is mainly associated with a sense of autonomy, pursuing the job and the sense of responsibility for themselves and their families, without arousing fear in any of those groups. Parents of adolescents with IBD, however, still show too excessive protectiveness, and only 32.5% of children has a different view on that in comparison with 82.5% a group of healthy children. The sum of the results obtained on a scale KompOs, in both studied groups is at the same level of average values, (6 sten). The differences can be seen in correlation with sociodemographic characteristics such as: place of residence, financial situation or fertility families. Youth without chronic disease burden had the average level of self-efficacy (sten 6), whereas young patients diagnosed with IBD had a higher sense of efficacy (sten 7). Children with IBD, residing in large cities, have a higher average number of points in both the overall scale and subscales KompOs like (strength, endurance) than their healthy peers. Conclusions. Young people with non-specific inflammatory bowel disease have a greater sense of strength and perseverance than their peers. The statistical significance between the number of points was obtained in the KompOs scale in the city of <100 thousand. The financial situation of families is different in both groups, especially in the persistence subscale.

This study examines the influence of self-efficacy and socio-demographic factors on the entrepreneurial intentions of selected Youth Corp members. The study adopted a cross-sectional survey design and a sample size of 300 National Youth Service Corp members were randomly selected in the five divisions of Lagos State with ages ranging from 18 to 30. Three hypotheses were tested using multiple regression and t-tests. The results show that there is a significant joint influence of sex, age, ethnicity and self-efficacy on entrepreneurial intentions (r2 = 0.90; P <.01]; male participants are more susceptible to entrepreneurial intentions than their female counterparts [t = 26.46, P <.01] and that Youth Corp members with a high self-efficacy rate significantly higher on entrepreneurial intentions (t = 25.09, P <.01]. Based on these findings, the study recommended that a self-efficacy programme should be included in the school curriculum so as to enhance entrepreneurial intentions among fresh graduates and, by so doing, reducing the high rate of unemployment in society. It was also recommended that future studies should use a larger sample and explore experimental methods so as to see if a causal relationship can be established among variables.

Purpose. The objective of the study was to determine to what degree general perception of self-efficacy protects general education teachers in Poland (educational stages II-IV) against professional burnout, and whether teachers of various subjects display any differences in this respect. Basic procedures. The study was carried out between April and June 2005 on a sample of 404 teachers (women n = 310, men n = 94). The diagnosis of the burnout syndrome was based on the Maslach Burnout Inventory (MBI). The perception of coping competences in teachers facing professional stress was measured with the General Self-Efficacy Scale (GSES) (Polish version) by R. Schwarzer, M. Jerusalem and Z. Juczyński. Main findings. Teachers are characterized by a high level of self-efficacy perception. Conclusions. As a factor preventing development of the three-dimensional burnout syndrome, perception of self-efficacy protects teachers against a loss of professional satisfaction, increasing emotional exhaustion and a tendency to depersonalize their pupils. Teachers of various subjects perceive the preventive role of self-efficacy differently.

Despite a rich research done abroad which has confirmed a strong influence of self-efficacy on performance and attitudes in relation to mathematics, there has been paid little attention to this concept in the Czech Republic. This article introduces the concept of self-efficacy and domain-specific self-efficacy in mathematics while also presents realized research with two main goals: 1) to develop and verify a Czech scale of mathematical self-efficacy for primary and secondary schools 2) to find out the relationship between mathematical self-efficacy and performance in mathematics. In the research group, there were 436 boys and girls from fourth and eighth grades. They completed a scale of mathematical self-efficacy, a mathematical questionnaire and a mathematical test with tasks provided by TIMSS 2007 project. The final Czech scale of mathematical self-efficacy consist of 30 items with a five-point evaluation scale and reports high reliability (Cronbach’s alpha = 0,9). Mathematical self-efficacy significantly correlated with performance in the mathematical test. There was also a significant difference in the level of self-efficacy between younger and older children.

Přestože zahraniční výzkumy potvrzují silný vliv matematické self-efficacy na výkony a postoje v matematice, v českém prostředí dosud nebyla tomuto tématu věnována větší pozornost. Článek proto představuje koncept self-efficacy a specifickou oblast self-efficacy v matematice a dále prezentuje uskutečněný výzkum, který měl dva hlavní cíle: vyvinout a ověřit český dotazník matematické self-efficacy pro základní školy a zjistit souvislost mezi matematickou self-efficacy a výkonem v matematice. Výzkumný soubor tvořilo 436 žáků a žákyň ze 4. a 8. tříd, kteří vyplnili dotazník matematické self-efficacy, dotazník o matematice a matematický test složený z úloh uvolněných z projektu TIMSS 2007.

Purpose. The aim of the study was to analyze which psychological factors can determine the physical activity levels of 15-yearold adolescents. The psychological factors examined were self-efficacy, physical self-esteem (body weight and body appearance) and body image. A multifactorial perspective based on a socioecological approach as well as Bandura’s social learning theory was used to clarify the relationships between the determinants and physical activity levels. Methods. The study participants were 2277 15-year-old adolescents (1086 boys and 1191 girls). Selected questions and scales from HBS C’s international standard questionnaire were used, including the Moderate to Vigorous Physical Activity index, the self perception of body weight and body appearance question, the General Self-Efficacy Scale and the Body Image Subscale. Results. It was found that over half of the Polish 15-year-old population featured an insufficient level of physical activity. Self-efficacy, body image and physical self-esteem of both body mass and body image were significant predictors of physical activity. The role of these predictors was found to be differentiated by gender. Conclusions. The physical activity levels of 15-year-old adolescents can be predicted by use of psychological variables.

The paper introduces an integrative functional approach to legal translation teaching at translation programmes taught as part of Philology major. The approach is based on functionalism, professional realism of training, and social constructivism. The main objective is to train translators who are aware of their mediating role in intercultural and intersystemic communication, know how to produce a translation ‘fit for the purpose’, deal with terminological incongruity and overcome problems typical of the translation process. The approach requires a student-centred approach and autonomy of learners. The paper presents practical tasks which help foster the functional approach to translation and empower students by raising their self-efficacy.

Growth of entrepreneurial ventures plays important role in a country’s economic development and entrepreneurs’ growth intention is considered as an important predictor of their venture growth. On the other hand, Psychological capital (PsyCap) is one such resource which can influence attitudes and behaviours like growth intentions of entrepreneurs. This study is aimed to investigate the relationship between psychological capital and growth intentions of entrepreneurs specifically in Malaysian context. The data was collected from 275 Malaysian SME entrepreneurs and Regression analysis reveals that PsyCap, as a core construct, positively and significantly influences the growth intentions of entrepreneurs. Further, it is also identified that two out of four dimensions of PsyCap (hope and self-efficacy) have significant and positive influence on entrepreneurs’ growth intentions. It is also revealed that PsyCap, as a core construct, more powerfully predicts the growth intentions as compared to its first order constructs separately. This finding highlights the significance of PsyCap as a core construct in entrepreneurial researches. It contributes knowledge to psychological capital and entrepreneurship literature and also has implications for existing and prospective entrepreneurs as well as government and private bodies.

In the current national curriculum (the Framework Educational Programme for Basic Education – FEP) the concept of child /pupil/student has become the basis for conceptual thinking about the whole educational process. If we want to respect the pupil´s personality, then it is necessary realize in practice the relevant didactic concept. It includes an approach to student assessment, too. Such assessment fully engages pupils in targeted judging process. In this contribution we describe a model of a comprehensive and developing assessment and conditions for its implementation. In the proposed model student self-assessment is fully connected to the systematic assessment of the teacher and gains a significant importance for self-directed learning. Both assessing processes (teacher assessment and pupil self-assessment) support the student´s motivation and efforts to achieve the set goals and encourage teachers to select appropriate strategies developing the personality of the pupil.

The aim of this study was to analyze the role of the five-factor model (FFM) of personality and self-efficacy as predictors of business performance in nascent entrepreneurs in cultural and creative industries (n = 81). The study was prospective and longitudinal – the assessment of personality preceded the start of a self-owned business by the participants – and an assessment of business performance was conducted twice: seven months and abouta year after starting the business. The results showed that the participants wereless neurotic, more extraverted, more open to experience, and more conscientious and had a stronger sense of general self-efficacy in comparison to the general population. The FFM traits were weak but significant predictors of business performance; the strongest predictive traits were extraversion, neuroticism, and entrepreneurial self-efficacy. Some analyses including neuroticism and extraversion supported the hypothesized mediating role of self-efficacy in the relationship between personality traits and some indices of business performance. The results are discussed in the context of previous studies, including meta-analyses.

The sudden loss of mobility is always an extremely difficult situation, since it entails many consequences. In the process of dealing with it, the individual’s predispositions play a significant role. Three predispositions seem to be crucial for maintaining emotional balance, accepting the existing health situation and coping with challenges: dispositional optimism, a sense of self-efficacy and psychological resilience. The aim of our study was to compare the levels of these individual predispositions and dimensions that affected the ability of the study group to cope with the sudden loss of mobility as a result of a traffic accident, and to determine the relationships between them. The study group consisted of 72 adults (36 women and 36 men), who suffered from full paralysis of the lower limbs due to spinal cord injury caused by a traffic accident. The research tools used were the GSES Scale, the LOT-R Test, the SPP-25 N Scale, the Beck Depression Scale, the AIS Scale and the CISS Questionnaire. The women in our study exhibited lower levels of all three of the selected predispositions. They also present more severe symptoms of depression and a lower acceptance of the loss of mobility. When facing stressful situations, they prefer the emotion-oriented style and, less frequently, the avoidant style, and they reveal a lower tendency to choose the task-oriented response. Dispositional optimism, self-efficacy and resilience positively correlate with acceptance of the disability and the use of a task-oriented style to cope with stress. However, they correlate negatively with the severity of depressive symptoms and a style focused on emotions. Gender is a moderator of relationships between the studied parameters.
