The study focuses on the evaluation of the relative efficiency of Czech grammar schools (‘gymnázium’) at preparing their graduates for admission to university programmes, taking into account the relative demand for the programmes, grammar school endowments, and a number of other relevant external factors. The authors argue that a comparison of secondary schools based exclusively on university acceptance rates or other direct measures of study achievements might be misleading, given that such approaches ignore many aspects related to the educational process, such as differences in the level of non-cognitive skills of students, family background, overall living standards in a region, and the specific focus of the given secondary school. The authors derive novel indirect measures of grammar school efficiency that take into account relative demands for university study programmes. Relying on high-quality panel data that cover the period 2000–2004, and using the stochastic frontier methodology commonly applied in efficiency evaluation in a wide number of sectors, including education, the study also argues that the divergence between selected direct measures of school performance and indirect indicators has been increasing over time.

This study aims to analyse motivation in the English as a Foreign Language (EFL) secondary classroom through gamification. To this end, a gamification proposal based on Game of Thrones TV series was designed. Classcraft, an online role-playing platform, was used to create a gaming scenario in the classroom. The proposal was implemented in two groups of 4th year of secondary school, formed by 43 students aged between 15 and 16 years old. Results showed that gamification had a positive impact on fostering students’ motivation. Particularly, a notable increase in students’ participation was observed since their extrinsic and intrinsic motivation – which increased 0.69 and 0.58 points accordingly – had improved after the implementation of the gamification proposal. Consequently, Classcraft proved to be a tool with a great potential to involve and engage students in the EFL classroom.

The article focuses on the specifics of the provision of the services provided by British extended schools. Extended services are designed primarily to raise standards of achievement and allow children to realize their full potential in an environment where education is valued. The tasks set by extended schools are determined: their services help parents to balance work and family commitments, develop parenting skills, become involved in children’s learning and support them in their efforts, and broaden the range of pupils’ interests. Extended schools are encouraged to work in partnership with neighboring schools, local statutory, voluntary or community agencies or groups, to provide a more integrated set of support services, to be able to identify people requiring help and organize it in the quickest possible time. The main types of available activities (after-school clubs and summer schemes; study support; play and recreation; sport and fitness classes; drama; music; ICT, cookery and language lessons; arts, crafts and other special interest clubs; volunteering, business and enterprise activities) are highlighted by the author. It is stated that the services offered by the school might include childcare, learning and recreational activities for all members of the community. A network of cooperation of the extended school with suppliers of social services at the present stage is considered. The author stresses that extended schools recognize the need to work in partnership with other agencies (such as health and social care) to help children and young people achieve their potential. The activities provided by each school are designed according to the particular pupil, family and community needs that have been identified. These services are mostly provided around the core school day either at a nearby school, or facility under the supervision of dedicated staff. It is believed that easier access to multi-disciplinary teams favours both pupils and teachers. The article emphasizes on the important objectives of this innovation – to provide extra help to children falling behind their peers, to find the best way to help an individual pupil to learn, to look at both the pupil’s learning needs and at overcoming barriers to learning that may come from outside the school. Pupils can benefit through early support so that these problems do not get in the way of their learning, and teachers are able to concentrate on teaching. Pupils achieving high standards can be offered more challenging work to stretch them further. It has been summarized that the implementation of extended schools contributes to modern educational process making it more efficient, and enhancing the competitiveness of each individual school and the education system as a whole.

This study interrogated the relevance of maritime education and training (MET) at the secondary level as an effective strategy for developing a sustainable supply of maritime labour and to mitigate current and future supply-demand imbalances arising from philosophical and sociological changes in society and in the maritime industry. Secondary education and its associated curriculum may be developed to form the underlying fundamentals of early awareness of maritime concepts targeted at youth of ages 11-18 years. To find answers to five research questions relating to this topic, a mixed method approach was applied in collecting and analysing data. The findings indicate strong evidence of the importance and relevance of MET at the secondary level. They further show this importance as it relates to an appreciation by the youth of the maritime industry as a domain for technical career options and to the creation of a sense of stewardship of the world’s oceans. Despite these positive findings, the study also finds that a number of key stakeholders are unaware of the potential and role of the maritime industry leading to a notable barrier to the implementation of MET at the secondary level and a lack of the necessary rigour and focus on promoting the industry to the youth via MET in secondary education. The study concludes by noting that there is a need for a focus on reforming the curricula of national secondary education system, where appropriate, as a first step towards the achieving the benefits of implementation of MET at the secondary level.

The article regards a single episode from a longstanding competition for the Royal Progymnasium in Reszel between Warmian cities in the 19th century. The preserved archival materials allow for a more in-depth analysis of the efforts of Olsztyn in the years 1861–1861 to gain this secondary school. The city attempted to outbid Lidzbark Warmiński by declaring, among others, the purchase of the Olsztyn castle to serve the needs of the school. Its authorities expressed their preliminary interest in the offer; however, the negotiations lasted for months until Olsztyn authorities assured the completion of all requirements outlined by the provincial school college in Königsberg. Olsztyn’s offer was so compelling that the Ministry of Education initially agreed to translocate the school. Yet, Reszel authorities soon began their diplomatic offensive that convinced Berlin to leave the progymnasium in their city and transform it into a full-scale secondary school – a gymnasium. The efforts of Olsztyn authorities had, nevertheless, a significant influence over the final shape of the network of secondary schools in Warmia in the 19th century, although in the dynamically developing Olsztyn of that time such a school appeared as late as in 1970s. In the conclusions, the author additionally attests that there is a clear relationship in the way of thinking of the then elites between the offer of education above primary level and specific economic calculations; the possibility of gaining education in secondary schools was connected with perspectives of further development of the city. The efforts of the cities were the decisive factor in the rapid development of the network of Eastern Prussian secondary schools in the second half of 19th century
