The article aims to analyze the relationship between history and fiction in Amin Maalouf ’s novels. Fascinated by history and literature, the Franco-Lebanese writer, tries, in several of his works, to combine history and romance and to make real and fictitious characters coexist in one universe. However, far from being limited to a simple transcription of history, Amin Maalouf has set himself the audacious goal of shedding light on the other side of history, as it was seen and lived on the “other side”; and at the same time he tries to revive the memory of certain figures forgotten or even denigrated by the official historiography. Thus, by rediscovering and reinterpreting history from a new perspective, Amin Maalouf aspires to understand the present and to build bridges between the two shores of the Mediterranean, between the North and the South, and between the East and the West. In his historical novel Le Chevalier des Touches (1864), Jules Barbey d’Aurevilly paints a sombre picture of the former counterrevolutionary Chouan heroes of Normandy : over the first decades following the French Revolution, the aristocrats lose their ancestral castle and end up living in an anachronistic salon while slowly falling into collective oblivion. Therefore, this article argues that Barbey d’Aurevilly’s novel is concerned with a pressing memory crisis (in the sense of the term coined by Richard Terdiman) which manifests itself in the material sphere. For this purpose, the gradual decay of the nobles’ abodes will be analyzed, from the transformation of their castle to the asylum where the protagonist spends his last days. The examination of these intérieurs allows us to gain extensive insight into Barbey d’Aurevilly’s attachment to the Ancien Régime and his fundamental repudiation of the social changes occasioned by the political developments in 19th-century France.

The author of the article proposes an analysis of the phenomenon of “polonisation” of the French language carried out by a group of Polish francophone novelists, who, during the Romantic Era, wrote historical novels devoted to the past of Poland. He proposes to see this phenomenon as an example of translingualism. After having defined this term, the author highlights the links between narration and translation, analyses the motivation of translingualism, examines its conditioning by the narrative context as well as the forms it takes in the texts, the problems it poses and the solutions proposed by novelists to these difficulties of linguistic transfer.

The paper deals with a historical polemic concerning the war of Vendée during the French revolution (1793–1799) which is considered by some historians to be the first genocide of modern history. One of them, Reynald Secher, speaks about a “memoricide”, which means a murder of historical memory. The paper presents this conception and then tries to verify it on the base of some historical novels written by Royalist and Republican authors all along the 19th century. The conclusion proves that historical memory of Vendée has neither been forgotten nor repressed, but on the contrary, this theme was being used by both sides in their political and ideological conflicts.
