The aim of the study was to determine the protective action of extracts from apple, strawberry and chokeberry with respect to linoleic acid and the biological membrane exposed to oxidation induced by physicochemical factors. The activity of the extracts was determined by measuring inhibition of lipid oxidation in red blood cell membrane, induced with UVC radiation and the AAPH radical. The protective effect of the extracts was essayed fl uorimetrically and spectrophotometrically. These results together with the ones obtained earlier explain the mechanism of the interaction between the extracts and the red blood cell membrane. The mechanism consists in the incorporation into the membrane and screening the cell against oxidation. The results indicate that the extracts possess very good antioxidant properties, since at the highest concentrations used (0.1 mg/mL) they protect the biological membranes almost entirely against oxidation. Among the extracts studied the best antioxidant properties were exhibited by the apple fruit, which gave 80% or 100% protection of the membrane at 0.05 mg/mL concentration of dry matter, for UVC and AAPH inductors, respectively.

Using the alkaline comet assay, we showed that bleomycin at 0.1-5 μg/ml induced DNA strand breaks and/or alkali-labile sites, measurable as the comet tail moment, in human colonic mucosa cells. This DNA damage was completely repaired during a 120-minute post-treatment incubation of the cells. Post-treatment of the bleomycin-damaged DNA with 3-methyladenine-DNA glycosylase II (AlkA), an enzyme recognizing alkylated bases, gave rise to a significant increase in the extent of DNA damage, indicating that the drug could induce alkylative bases in DNA. We did not observe any change in the comet tail moment in the presence of catalase. Vitamin E ((+)-α-tocopherol) decreased DNA damage induced by bleomycin. The results obtained suggest that hydrogen peroxide might not be involved in the formation of DNA lesions induced by bleomycin in the colonic mucosa cells, and that vitamin E may exert protective effects on these cells.

Badania prowadzono na niewielkim (10,5 ha) i płytkim (2,5 m) Jeziorze Gągławeckim (jezioro Gągławki). Jezioro posiada zlewnię o powierzchni 348,3 ha, w której największy udział mają lasy – 66,7%; grunty orne zajmują 18,9%, łąki i pastwiska 7,5% a teren zabudowany 2,9%.

The research was carried out on a small (10.5 ha) and shallow (2.5 m) Lake Gągławeckie (Gągławki). The drainage basin of Lake Gągławeckie is 348.3 ha. Forests land comprises the largest portion of this area, i.e. 66.7%, arable land 18.9%, grass land 7.5% and build area 2.9%. The waters were characteristic of a high content of phosphorus, up to 0.285 mg dmˉ³, nitrogen up to 4.39 mg·dmˉ³ and calcium – 97.1 mg·dmˉ³. The reason for the lake’s high trophic level was no doubt the excessive loading from the drainage basin. The actual nutrient runoff from the drainage basin to the lake exceeded the critical loads, as defined by Vollenweider. Low quality of the lake’s waters and the parallel high external loading indicate that preventive measures should be taken, aimed at reducing the external loading.

The effects of zinc on cadmium accumulation in rats examined. Male Wistar rats (n = 54) were divided into 3 groups. Group 1 (controls) were receiving deionized water, groups 2 and 3 were receiving 5 ppm and 50 ppm cadmium as cadmium sulphate in deionized drinking water for 8 weeks. Groups 2 and 3 were each divided into subgroups A, B, C, which were given zinc simultaneously with cadmium (8 weeks) or after termination of cadmium exposure (2 weeks). Zinc, when administered both simultaneously with cadmium and after exposure to 5 ppm Cd, decreased serum and spleen Cd concentration and increased its removal in urine. Zinc administered simultaneously with 50 ppm Cd was observed to exert a protective action resulting in decreased serum, liver, and kidney Cd concentration.

Wykonano 8 tyg. doświadczenie na szczurach zatruwanych ołowiem i kadmem, którym podawano preparaty flawonoidów aronii i tarczycy bajkalskiej. Wykazano ochronne działanie aronii na zmiany patologiczne w wątrobie i nerkach zatruwanych zwierząt.

In a 8-week experiment, rats intoxicated with lead (400 mg/kg foodstuff) and cadmium (100 mg/kg foodstuff) were receiving per os flavonoid extracts of Aronia melanocarpa and Scutellaria baicalensis at 5 mg/kg body weight. The pathomorphological changes in liver and kidneys of the poisoned animals were less evident after treatment with flavonoids of Aronia melanocarpa. The advantageous effect of that extract was confirmed by a slight decrease of free-radical reactions in the chemiluminescent test. After treatment of rats with flavonoids of Scutellaria baicalensis, the protective effect was not observed.
