The article is devoted to the analysis of scientific achievements of researchers and teachers of the Department of Early Childhood Education and Media Pedagogy of the University of Silesia in Katowice during forty years of its functioning in this academic centre. These achievements are presented against the background of the development of theoretical studies and empirical research conducted in leading academic centres in Poland in the field of preschool pedagogy, early-school pedagogy and media pedagogy.
The article presents an important issue which regards the concept of the kindergarten operating as a The Learning Organization. Basing upon relevant theoretical assumptions, the author analyses some reports on problem-related evaluations of kindergartens compiled by the Supervisory Board of Educational Evaluation System, and then she underlines the importance of reflections on today’s educational approaches. The article is targeted not only at students, but also at those teachers who try to make a concept of operation for an establishment of education.
People have a high degree of social confidence and trust in the profession of a teacher. From the social point of view, its representatives carry out special tasks concerning a high regard for the public interest — in this case, the education of the young generations. Therefore, the work of teachers, including preschool teachers, is almost always observed and socially evaluated. It is formally and substantively evaluated by supervision authorities and by society, including children’s parents. The article presents preliminary research on the parents’ perception of male teachers in kindergarten in the context of social trust. The results show that the respondents feel discomfort due to gender stereotypes about men working with children and about the profession of teaching. However, having contact with a male kindergarten teacher alleviates this discomfort, improves the teacher’s assessment of his profession, and increases parents’ confidence in his actions.
The subject of the article is the analysis of the state of contemporary research on the small child of preschool age, which has been conducted in social sciences. I point out the key subjects and research problems in preschool pedagogy as well as the sources and latest research results in the quantitative and qualitative paradigm. The paper encourages interdisciplinary research on small children in order to update the state of knowledge about the acceleration of their development.
