The authors discuss examples of solutions currently applied in the process of modernisation of main railway lines undertaken by the Polish PKP PLK S.A. in order to =assess compliance with the applicable environmental conditions. The solutions described pertain to nature conservation and restoration in the vicinity of railway routes. They are developed according to three assumptions: protection of animals along transport routes; traffic noise reduction; natural compensation which consists in restoration of the lands adjacent to railway lines in order to enhance water regimes and habitat conditions for animals.

The developments in food industry, which are to be continued in the next few years, are shown. They are as follows: industrialisation of processing, increase in production of high-processed products, intensive modernisation and concentration. Moreover, there is a strenghening tendency for integration with agriculture and for modernisation of introductory stages of processing chain. These tendencies are present in all branches of food industry but of different scope.

The aim of the discussed publication of Szczepan Wierzchosławski is to give a new perspective on many important issues for the history of the Polish lands of the Prussian partition. In ten essays, excluding introductory comments and the conclusion, the author presents his standpoint towards the problem of conditions and effects of the process of the modernization of Polish society on the example of cases from Pomerelia and the Kulm Land. The essential part of the author’s discussion is to what extend Polish society took advantage of the process of building a big capitalist, modern state, from the social and economic point of view, as well as of building the system of Rechtsstaat in Germany within the co-existence and capitalist competition. The work of Szczepan Wierzchosławski to a large extent eliminates a stereotypical perception concerning the co-existence of Poles and Germans in West Prussia (and not only) in the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century, showing many elements of cooperation between both nations. He also presents the process of “growing out of” the feudal structures and the shaping of a modern nation within the German state. He undermines the stereotype that the Polish nation was monolithic, and the Prussian administration was alienated from the reality of the province. He shows Pomerelia as a small motherland of Poles and Germas, who inhabited the area in the 19th century and at the beginning of the 20th century.

The analysis of the amounts assigned in the budget act for defence expenditures since the year 2005 clearly shows that, despite the legal obligation, the amount designated for this purpose has never exceeded 1.95 per cent of the previous year’s GDP. The article attempts to identify the reasons for this situation, and to offer another solution so that the planning of the state budget spending for the financing of Poland’s defence needs is compliant with the law.

For all the post-war decades sociology in Poland has been focused on problems that are typical of peripheral modernising societies. The aim of this text is to identify, from today’s perspective, successive stages of sociology’s development after the Second World War. In the beginning, sociology was focused on perceiving the communist revolution as a social laboratory. In the 1960s and 1970s, Polish society underwent enforced industrialisation and urbanisation. In the next decade, studies were dominated by critical analysis of the communist system in crisis. After 1989, social scientists started to study the post-communist transformation, which was seen as a “return to normality.” The entire time, sociological studies oscillated between the monitoring of project implementation and the recording of new grass roots processes. The author considers that sociology’s recent departure from the narrative of catching up and imitation creates a chance for a more precise view of social processes in Poland.

Przedstawiono efekty kompleksowej termomodernizacji stosowanej w budynkach wielomieszkaniowych w Białymstoku w latach 1995-2008 z uwzględnieniem tworzenia wspólnot mieszkaniowych, głównie w zasobach budynków będących pod Zarządem Mienia Komunalnego. Efekty te są różne i zależą od czasu wnoszenia budynków oraz w czyim znajdują się zarządzie. Najmniejsze efekty występują w budynkach znajdujących się w Zarządzie Mienia Komunalnego, a najwyższe w Zarządzie Towarzystwa Budownictwa Społecznego. Przypuszczano, że tworzenie wspólnot mieszkaniowych wywoła proces termomodernizacji w budynkach będących pod Zarządem Mienia Komunalnego. Tak się nie stało i na proces ten trzeba jeszcze poczekać. Lokatorzy zasobów komunalnych są zbyt biedni, aby intensyfikować termomodernizację budynków, które zasiedlają.

Realizacje te, pomimo podniesienia poziomu technicznego i estetycznego, nie spowodowały poprawy funkcjonalności tych obszarów. Dyskusyjne jest również wydawanie sporych kwot z programów dofinansowywanych przez U E na budowę replik miasteczek, przy jednoczesnym wyburzaniu z powodu braku pieniędzy na remonty, zabytkowych obiektów w małych miastach. Należy mieć nadzieję, że zostaną zmienione kryteria oceny projektów, jak również priorytety w następnej transzy ZPORR na lata 2007-2013.

The most significant spatial result in small Polish towns was modernisation of central zones within EU programms. Even though the investments enhanced technical and aesthetic level, they haven't improved the functionality. Controversial is also allocating large amounts of money from programms co-financed by EU to construction of little towns' replicas while facilities of historical value are demolished due to lack of funds for renovation. The hope remains that the criteria of evaluating the projects and the priorities in the next ZPORR tranche for the years 2007-2013 will be changed.

The objective of this article is to theoretically and empirically link Catherine Hakim’s preference theory to Shalom Schwartz’s basic values theory and determine to what extent women’s preferences in relation to employment and a career are supported by their value orientations. A related question, and one with policy relevance, concerns the role of education in women’s deep-rooted preferences and individual concepts of life-success. A third question is to what extent higher education helps women to overcome social barriers to implementing their choices between job (career) and family (household), barriers that mainly derive from the prevalence of conservative values and low labour-market flexibility. The authors carried out a comparative analysis of 25 European countries using data from the second round of the European Social Survey (ESS2) collected in the year 2004. The results of multilevel modeling reveal that education not only significantly reduces the tendency towards conservative values and strengthens openness to change – more significantly with women than with men – but simultaneously helps women overcome the social barriers in the formation of their work-career preferences, particularly in countries with stronger barriers.

Zawiera projekty modernizacji istniejących linii kolejowych do prędkości 200 km/h, a także projekty budowy nowych odcinków oraz aktualny stan inwestycji w Polsce i w Czechach.

High-speed railway is crucial factor for economic and social development of the Central-Eastern European countries. Several projects covering modernization of existing lines to the speed in the range of 200 km/h as well as the construction of completely new sections have been prepared. Some of them are already on the way, in particular in Poland and in the Czech Republic.

Chciałbym napisać podręcznik historii zaawansowanej lub podręcznik historii dla zaawansowanych, który nie byłby wykładem faktograficzno-chronologicznym, lecz opracowaniem z socjologii historycznej. Jej istotą jest zorganizowanie refleksji wokół problemów – i to rozpatrywanych w długim trwaniu oraz przy uwzględnieniu ich występowania na różnych terenach. W jakich punktach włączyłbym Brazylię do takiego opracowania? Inaczej mówiąc: jakie sprawy, istotne dla dziejów wielu krajów, ale w jej historii rysujące się szczególnie wyraźnie, uznałbym za warte analizy? Byłoby to wszak opracowanie wybiórcze. Kwestię – powiedzmy – rewolucji przemysłowej musiałbym pokazywać na przykładzie dziejów Anglii, zaś rozwój masowej produkcji samochodu osobowego na przykładzie Forda – jako na casusach najbliższych modelowym, choć oczywiście nie wyczerpującym sprawy.

It is my intention to write an advanced history manual or a history manual for advanced users, which would not be a factual and a chronological discourse, but a study of historical sociology. Its core is the organisation of ideas around certain problems – ones evaluated in long-term perspective and considered as present in different areas. Under which aspects would I include Brazil in this study? In other words: which features, significant for many countries though especially salient in the Brazilian history, would I consider worth analysing? After all, it would be a selective study. For instance, the question of the industrial revolution I would need to illustrate on the example of England, whereas the mass production of cars on the example of Ford. These cases would be closest to the exemplary, though certainly not exhausting the issue.

Podczas modernizacji podtorza na całej długości linii wzmacniana jest górna strefa podtorza przez wbudowanie warstwy ochronnej. W niektórych miejscach, według stwierdzonych potrzeb, wykonywane są także naprawy słabych miejsc podtorza. Różne naprawy w tym samym miejscu powinny być przeprowadzone w stosownej kolejności przy zastosowaniu celowo dobranych metod. W referacie omówiono trzy przykłady łączonych napraw podtorza wykonanych podczas modernizacji linii E-20 i E-30.

During the modernization of the subgrade on the whole length of the line, the upper zone is strengthened by building in some protection layer. In some places, when it is necessary, some reparations of weak spots of subgrade are conducted. The varied reparations of subgrade - when they are conducted in the same place - should be made in proper order and using appropriate methods. The paper contains analysis of three examples of subgrade reparations made during modernization of the railways lines E-20 and E-30.

The program of constructing high-speed rail in Poland consisting of two enterprises: construction the line from Warszawa to Lodz/Poznan/Wroclaw and modernisation E 65 (CMK- Central Trunk Line) line with extensions to Krakow and Katowice and further to the border of Czech Republic and Slovakia. Nowadays the feasibility studies are under elaboration and the finish is planned in years 20011-2014. Construction and modernisation are planned to begin in about 2014. There are also in progress the complementary activities for these projects, in particular under reconstruction railway junctions, construction new buildings and upgrading the existing ones.

Modyfikacje i uzupełnienia opisu przedmiotu zamówienia dostosowane do potrzeb kolejnych etapów postępowania przetargowego opracowano na podstawie wyników rozmów z potencjalnymi wykonawcami zamówienia, z uwzględnieniem odnośnych przepisów ustawy Prawo Zamówień Publicznych. W wyniku opracowano zmodyfikowaną treść opisu przedmiotu zamówienia, która zostanie wykorzystana w ostatecznej wersji SIWZ.

The purpose of the work was to prepare the preliminary version of and make modifications to the description of the subject of the contract to the Terms of Reference for modernisation, on a tender basis, of the duo/quarto mill existing at the Institute for Ferrous Metallurgy, including the supply of new auxiliary equipment as module B of the semi-industrial line for simulation of manufacturing metal and alloy products (LPS). The preliminary version of the description of the subject of the contract was prepared based on the results of the concept statutory projects carried out at the Institute for Ferrous Metallurgy with regard to the technical, technological and economical aspects of LPS construction. The modifications and supplements to the description of the subject of the contract, adapted to the needs of successive stages of the tender proceedings, were developed based on the results of talks with potential order contractors in consideration of the applicable provisions of the Public Procurement Law. As a consequence, the modified content of the description of the subject of the contract included in the final version of the Terms of Reference was prepared.

The article presents results of using the flow structure design equipment, which is based on the method of visual diagnostics of flow structure simulations in the physical models. The changes of radial compressor collector were designed according to distributing of speeds which were exposed by the method of visual diagnostics. The tests results on the stand of "H. Cegielski-Poznań" firm has shown the reduction of noise during work of compressor DA-21O from 96 to 84dB, at the same time the efficiency of work was increase up to 2,3%.
