The present research aims to gauge novice college Spanish students’ perceptions of blended courses to help the design and teaching of blended learning. Blended learning shifts from teacher-centered classes to a learner-centered focus (Hartman, Dziuban & Moskal, 1999; Morgan 2002). There is also more emphasis on peer-to-peer learning (Collis, 2003) since information can be easily shared. The participants of the study had no prior experience taking blended courses. The 14 participants were given an anonymous questionnaire at the end of the semester to explore their perceptions of hybrid learning in order to enhance the set-up of the courses. The questionnaire consisted of open- and closedended questions. The findings of the study revealed moderately positive attitudes towards blended courses. Finally, after analyzing the participants’ discourse, some suggestions for the design and instruction of future blended courses were outlined, especially for novice foreign language learners.

The present paper is a report on the author’s own teaching experiences and focuses on the creation of learning situations in a virtual environment. The main aim is to define the characteristics of a learning situation in such an environment. More precisely, the paper focuses on: (1) answering the ques-tion whether – and to what extent – current studies on the model of hybrid education provide the necessary information useful in developing the pro-fessional competence of teachers willing to use ICT tools in their work, and, (2) drawing conclusions about the author’s own teaching experiences, whose aim is to determine what types of actions on the part of the teacher, concerning on the one hand, the task’s scenario and, on the other hand, his or her intervention in a virtual environment, can contribute to learning. The article emphasizes the necessity of perceiving interaction in a virtual envi-ronment as a separate communicative situation which requires specific skills both on the part of the teacher and the learner.

At the Institute of Applied Linguistics (ILS) in the entire Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan (UAM), full-time classes were suspended as of 11 March 2019 due to the declaration of a pandemic, and till June 2021 were held in the remote mode. The need to switch from full-time to remote teaching therefore fell on both lecturers and students suddenly, causing temporary disorganisation of the teaching process. In a short time, however, both parties had to organise themselves anew and take up the hitherto unknown challenge of learning and teaching completely at a distance, even though the form of communication itself, via the Internet, was not new. The problems this posed and the conclusions it led to are presented in this article. The aim of the article is to reflect on the form and implementation of distance learning in selected subjects of the Bachelor’s and Master’s degree courses in Applied Linguistics at ILS in the academic years 2019/20 and 2020/21, based on the experiences of the authors of the article and the participating students, which ena-bled the former to draw conclusions on the effectiveness of this form of teaching and raising the quality of education in the subjects studied.
