Male Wistar rats were exposed for 3 and 6 months to NH4F in a toxicological chamber. Some animals received sodium salts of quercetin sulfonic acids at a dose of 5 or 20 mg/kg body weight. It was found that quercetin alleviates biochemical changes in the liver caused by ammonium fluoride, in particular concerning enzyme activities and lipid metabolism.

These studies were undertaken to identify the reasons for decay of spruce and juniper trees growing near the Metalplast plant in Oborniki. The material from the trees growing in this region was analyzed for the presence of free and complex-bound fluorine (FA) and total content of fluorine (FB), as well as some metals known to hae harmful effects on plants. The results were compared with analogous data obtained for plants growing in the area free from this kind of pollution, in Kórnik. The comparison has confirmed the hypothesis claiming that the main reason for decay of trees of the above species growing in the neighbourhood of the Metalplast plant in Oborniki is pollution by fluorine compounds.

Celem pracy było określenie zdolności skorupy jaja do absorpcji lotnych związków fluoru. Materiałem badawczym były jaja kurze pochodzące od jednego szczepu kur rasy Rhode Island Red. Jaja poddano zróżnicowanej czasowo ekspozycji na działanie fluorku amonowego w komorze toksykologicznej. Stwierdzono, iż średnia zawartość fluorków w skorupie jaj koreluje z czasem trwania ich narażenia na działanie fluorku amonowego w powietrzu.

This work has been intended to assess the ability of hen egg shell to absorb volatile fluorine compounds. Eggs obtained from the same tribe of Rhode Island Red hens were used in our study. The eggs were exposed to ammonium fluoride in a toxicological chamber. It has been found that the average fluoride content in the egg shells is correlated with the duration of exposure of the eggs to atmospheric ammonium fluoride.

Przeprowadzono badania nad wpływem fluorku sodu na parametry stresu oksydacyjnego w mitochondriach z łożysk ludzkich. Zaobserwowano, że fluorek sodu powoduje zwiększenie stężenia dialdehydu malonowego i zmniejszenie zawartości grup tiolowych białek, natomiast nie wpływa na generację rodnika hydroksylowego (•OH).

Increasing presence of fluorine compounds in the environment and the growing human exposure require continuous monitoring. The aim of the study was to assess natrium fluoride (NaF) influence on some of the oxidative stress parameters, such as: malonedialdehyde (MDA) concentration, content of protein sulfhydryl groups (SH) and the ability to generate the hydroxyl radical, (•OH). The assays were performed by spectrophotometry on mitochondria from human placenta. It was noted that NaF caused MDA level increase, SH groups content decrease, and had no influence on hydroxyl radical generation. To sum up, the mechanism of lipid peroxidation increase caused by NaF seems to be connected with generation of superoxide radical and reduction of SH groups content rather than with increased hydroxyl radical generation.

Poziom fluorków w surowicy krwi jest jednym z najważniejszych wskaźników ekspozycji na związki fluoru. Od tej wielkości zależą dalsze losy fluorków w organizmach kręgowców. W przeprowadzonym na szczurach eksperymencie wykazano, że po wziewnej intoksykacji NH4F, suplementacja paszy białkami mleka - w ilości 1 g/kg masy ciała, zdecydowanie obniża poziom fluorków w surowicy krwi badanych zwierząt. Omówiono możliwy mechanizm oddziaływania białek mleka na zawartość fluorków i znaczenie tego zjawiska.

A long-term experiment was conducted with rats exposed to ammonium fluoride aerosol. The standard diet was supplemented with low doses of milk proteins ( 1 g protein/kg body weight) and the level of serum fluoride was determined. After six months, serum fluoride concentration was measured by the F-ion sensitive elektrode. The possible mechanism of the depressive effect of low doses of milk proteins on serum fluoride was discussed.

Total lipids and levels of their triglyceride, cholesterol and phospholipid fractions in ovine plasma were analysed. The sheep came from the Western Pomereania region characterized by differing levels of industrial pollution. The results lead to the following conclusions: 1. Fluorides affected ovine lipids metabolism to increase total lipids content. 2. Location of the fold relative to the sources of the emission affected ovine blood characteristics. 3. Phospholipids reduced the unfavourable changes in lipid fractions.

The objective of the study was to determine differences in the response of trees of three species: Pinus sylvestris, Picea abies and Pseudotsuga taxifolia to environment pollution with fluorine compounds. The amounts of free and complexed fluorine (FA) and total fluorine (FB) were determined in the needles of trees of the three species growing in a polluted area and in an area considered free from pollution. The results of this study showed that Douglas fir is a greater sensitivity to fluorine compounds than Norway spruce and Scots pine, despite its high resistance to fluorine absorption. Estimation of the degree of environment pollution on the basis visible injury and the content of fluorine compounds in needles is discussed. The results were supplemented with observations of lily of the valley (Convallaria maialis) – a plant particularly sensitive to injury by fluorine compounds.

Celem badań było określenie zróżnicowania w reakcji drzew sosny zwyczajnej, świerka pospolitego i daglezji zielonej, na wpływ związków fluoru. Analizowano zawartości fluoru wolnego i związanego kompleksowo (FA) oraz całkowitego (FB) w igłach drzew rosnących w terenie skażonym oraz uznanym za wolny od wpływu zanieczyszczeń. Wyniki tych badań wskazują na większą wrażliwość daglezji niż świerka i sosny mimo, że charakteryzuje się ona znaczną odpornością na pochłanianie fluoru. W pracy dyskutowana jest możliwość wykorzystywania obserwacji widocznych objawów uszkodzeń i pomiarów zawartości fluorków, do oceny stopnia skażenia środowiska przez związki fluoru. W badaniach dodatkowo uwzględniono konwalię – jako roślinę wskaźnikową na ten typ zanieczyszczeń.

Na podstawie zwiększającej się kumulacji związków fluoru w kościach zwierzyny płowej wykazano, że skażenie środowiska ma miejsce nie tylko w pobliżu zakładów przemysłowych, ale obejmuje również tereny oddalone o dziesiątki kilometrów od źródeł emisji.

The aim of this work was to show that the deer of the Western Pomerania continues to be in danger due to continuing industrialization of that region of Poland. To that effect, fluorine content of 237 deer mandibles from the north-west territories of Poland was determined in 1982 and 1990. It has been found that in the vicinity of the industrial plants the situation has somewhat improved. Yet in the areas several tens of miles away from the pollution sources, fluorine concentration in the bones may be even higher, which may present serious hazard to the free-living animals.
