It can be assumed that globalization, leading to the unification and assimilation of many processes which take place in the world economy, technology, and culture will transform the contemporary world into a global village, and thus the problem of cultural differences will be marginalized. If the easiness of acquisition and transmission of information via Internet as well as fast and cheap movement of people offered by economic airlines are taken into account, it can be concluded that the discussion about culture shock and reverse culture shock experienced by expatriates is unjustified. However, in practice, the phenomenon of culture shock still occurs, and its course and scope depends on expatriate’s personality, his preparation for work and life in a foreign country, and the degree of cultural diversity. Culture shock extends the period of adaptation to a new culture, has negative impact on well-being, achievements, effectiveness, and reduces job satisfaction. Some managers cannot adjust to work and life in a foreign cultural environment and decide to return earlier to their home country. The ones who are able to overcome culture shock and adapt to new conditions of work and life can experience reverse culture shock after coming back home, because in the meantime everything has changed. Culture shock also applies to inpatriates, local managers delegated to the headquarters. Complete elimination of negative consequences of culture shock and reverse culture shock is not always possible but there are some methods of reducing negative effects of this phenomenon. Hence, the purpose of this article is to identify the essence and the course of culture shock, and indicate the ways leading to the reduction and mitigation of its consequences. Studies and analysis of literature illustrating culture shock and reverse culture shock were conducted to achieve the aim of this paper, and the monographic method was utilized to the presentation of the results of the research.

The paper addresses the issue of culture shock and the challenges met in the process of adaptation to a new culture, as experienced by international students studying in Poland. Until recently, Poland has not been regarded as a very attractive educational market. Poland joining the EU in 2004 contributed to a surge in various types of migrant arriving in the country, including international students. However, for the last few years the number of young people coming to Poland in order to study has been growing steadily. Yet, this growth does not mean that state, local or university authorities have any knowledge of how to resolve possible future conflicts which might and often do arise between overseas students and the society which receives them, or of how to help these students with their everyday problems. This dilemma is the result of a lack of studies regarding this group. Previous studies regarding migrants in Poland were only slightly focused on international students. In spite of the fact that international students are migrants, they differ significantly from other types of migrant – mostly those who are in Poland for economic or political reasons. The aim of the research presented in this article was therefore to carry out an initial exploration of the problems which this group encounters both at university and in society. The research was carried out in two stages with medical students in Łódź. The first stage was a paper-based questionnaire completed by international students studying at the Medical University of Łódź (N=74). The second stage involved three focus-group interviews conducted with some of these students.

Acculturation and language proficiency have been found to be inter-related both from the perspective of second language acquisition (Schumann, 1978, 1986) and socio-psychological adaptation in cross-cultural contacts (Ward, Bochner, & Furnham, 2001). However, the predictions as to the effect of a particular strategy on success differ, with assimilation believed to create most favourable conditions for SLA and integration for general well-being. The present study explores acculturation patterns in three expert users of English as a second language, recent Polish immigrants to the UK, in relation to their language experience. The qualitative data were collected with the use of a questionnaire and analysed with respect to language experience and socio-affective factors. The analysis aimed at better understanding of the relationship between language learning in a formal context and language use in a natural setting on the one hand and the relationship between language expertise and acculturation strategy choice on the other. The results show that in spite of individual differences, expert language users tend to adopt an assimilation rather than integration acculturation strategy. This may suggest that attitudes are related to expertise in English as a second language in a more conservative way than advocated by cross-cultural approaches.

The article presents aspects related to the perception of the Polish culture by foreign students of the University of Warsaw. Comments by representatives of these nations, with whom we share a common history and a Slavic ethnic char-acteristic, became the basis for deliberations. Aspects are also addressed here related to migration to Poland, its causes and characteristics. The analysis cov-ered cultural knowledge about Poland, ways of perceiving the shared history and mental differences mentioned by foreign students coming from the east-ern territories of the First Republic of Poland.

Although Poland has become a part of global migration chain, studies that deal with the influence of migration on family life and on the functioning of migrant families in Poland still do not cover all arising problems. The aim of this paper is to fill that gap. The paper presents such issues as the emergence of discrepancies in life values and professional priorities among spouses, intensification of marital problems, loosening the marriage bond, family culture shock and multiplied culture shock, family instability and deviations in the family development cycle, responses to prolonged separation of family members. The above-mentioned issues are illustrated with examples of problems of foreign families living in Poland: Chechen refugees, economic immigrants from Vietnam, multinational expats. The content of this paper should interest teachers, pedagogues, counsellors, social workers working with migrants and people who educate the mentioned professions.

The issue of culture shock, as described in the disease or the growth model, is now becoming very popular in Polish scientific literature. The reasons for this are both the increasing awareness and the increasing number of foreigners coming to Poland every year. This text aims to present the results of my research on the experience of culture shock by foreigners in casual and routine contacts with Poles. Analysis was conducted in a qualitative approach using video material found on YouTube. Thirty videos made by young adults published in Polish or English (or with provided subtitles) between 2017–2020 were qualified for the analysis. The conducted research confirms the findings of other researchers who reported a negative perception of attitudes of Poles towards immigrants, and, at the same time, it allowed to gain greater insight into the experienced embarrassment and awkwardness, or even a sense of rejection in their contacts with the natives. The article also addresses the importance of YouTube videos in intercultural adult learning.

Przeprowadzone badania potwierdzają ustalenia innych badaczy, którzy donosili o negatywnym odbiorze nastawień Polaków i Polek do imigrantów i imigrantek, jednocześnie pozwoliły zdobyć większy wgląd w przeżywane skrępowanie i niezręczności czy wręcz poczucie odrzucenia w kontaktach z tubylcami.

W opracowaniu dokonano analizy i oceny treści, charakteru oraz skutków kulturowych i personalnych problemów towarzyszących zarządzaniu zasobami ludzkimi w międzynarodowych grupach kapitałowych.

This study analyzes and assesses the content, character, and effects of cultural and personnel problems accompanying the management of human resources in international capital groups. These problems have been identified over the course of empirical studies conducted by this paper’s author on the subsidiaries of major global corporations operating in Poland. These problems encompass questions of the assimilation of expatriates, culture shock, “corporate cynicism,” the phenomenon of polyarchy, fear of job loss, and stress on the part of managers and workers stemming from the multicultural character of their work environment. Also presented are ways of solving the analyzed problems within the framework of human resource management in the investigated economic organizations.
