In this article ‘text' is considered to be the basic unit of translation which can be observed empirically. In the context of the European Communities (EC), the Author also elaborates on the most important issues of ‘the languages for special purposes concerning European integration and the European Union (EU)' (according to F. Grucza). The translation of ‘derivative texts' is regarded as the translation of EC texts based on texts of primary and secondary Community Law. The Author underlines that the translator of the EC's derivative texts is very limited in their creativity and is bound to be most careful when rendering standardized/restricted parts of such texts. Their aim is to ensure harmonization of a text translated and concordance of the parallel texts. The translator of EC's derivative text also needs to be acquainted with special style guides concerning the translation of EC texts and with standards of the Polish language, as well as they are expected to use reference material and terminology databases provided on the Internet. In addition, the Author describes the institutional system of the EU and the EC as well as gives examples of approved and unacceptable translations into Polish of specific words/phrases in given EC texts.
