This study aimed to evaluate the antioxidant properties, α -glucosidase inhibitory activity, and the total content of polyphenols and flavonoids in the selected antidiabetic herbal blends (1-6), used traditionally in diabetes. The strongest antioxidant activity (DPPH and CUPRAC) was observed in extracts from blends 1 and 6 (IC50 <70 μg/ml, IC0,5 <110 μg/ml, respectively). Extracts from these blends also contained most of the polyphenolic compounds (>40 mg GAE/g), had a high content of flavonoids (6 - 10.96 mg QE/g, 1 - 7.51 mg QE/g) and the highest α-glucosidase inhibiting capacity (for 1 >90%, for 6 >90% and 5,55%, while for acarbose 1.76% and 0.93% at the 100 μg/ml and 10 μg/ml, respectively). The antioxidant activity of 1 and 6 correlated with the content of polyphenols and α-glucosidase inhibitory properties and indicates the existence of this mechanism in supporting the treatment of type 2 diabetes and diabetic complications by the above preparations.

The aim of our study was to evaluate and compare antioxidant and antimicrobial activity of aqueous, methanol and chloroform extracts of leaves of Allium ursinum (A. ursinum). Total phenol (TPC) and flavonoid (TFC) content in extracts and antioxidant activity using DPPH (1,1- diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl) assay were determined spectrophotometrically. In vitro antimicrobial activity was tested by microdilution method. The highest TPC and TFC were observed for chloroform extract. The extracts showed different degrees of antimicrobial activity. The intensity of antimicrobial action varied depending on the group of microorganism and the type of extracts. Our results demonstrated rational basis for the traditional uses of A. ursinum in alleviation of oxidative stress and against various pathogenic microorganisms.

Antioxidants are chemical compounds that scavenge free radicals in organisms and protect most important biomolecules such as DNA, proteins, lipids from their damaging activity. Antioxidants reduce a risk of cancer, inflammations, arthritis, cardiovascular diseases and others. The objective of this study was to prepare extracts of different tea species (Camellia sinensis, Aspalathus linearis) in order to compare their antioxidant and radical scavenging activities using reaction detection. Methanolic black, green and red tea extracts were prepared. Reaction detection was used for on-line determination of free radicals of 2,2-diphenyl-1- picrylhydrazil (DPPH) binding by high performance liquid chromatography.

The study analyzed colour intensity, the total phenolic and flavonoid contents, as well as antioxidant and antibacterial activities of honeys from Serbia. All the tested honeys contained considerable levels of phenolics. The highest phenolic content was obtained in forest honey - 1389.71 mg gallic acid equivalents/kg. High levels of phenolics and flavonoids were also determined in honeydew, meadow and oregano honeys. The radical scavenging activity measured by DPPH method in linden and forest honey was 0.45 and 2.75 mmol Trolox equivalents/kg, respectively. The ferric reducing potential was the greatest in forest honey - 6.04 mmol Fe2+/kg. Darker honeys had a greater phenolic content and antioxidant activity. The antimicrobial activity of honeys against six bacterial strains isolated from human material were studied using a microwell dilution assay. The minimal inhibitory concentration of honeys ranged from 6.25% w/w (for oregano honey against Enterococcus faecalis and honeydew honey against Streptococcus pneumoniae) to >50% w/w (meadow honey against Staphylococcus aureus). The minimal bactericidal concentration ranged from 12.5% w/w (honeydew and bee pollen enriched honey against E. faecalis) to >50% w/w. Higher values of antimicrobial activities were found in honeydew, oregano, and forest honeys, while meadow honey showed the lowest antimicrobial activity. Analyzed honeys exhibited a strong antioxidant and broad-spectrum antibacterial activity against multidrug-resistant pathogenic bacteria. Phenolic compounds, especially in dark amber forest and honeydew honey, as well as in amber oregano honey, may contribute to their efficacy in therapeutic administration.

The objective of this study was to evaluate the chemical composition CH3OH-CH2Cl2 (1:1) extract and biological activities of various extracts derived from the aerial parts of the brown marine alga Stoechospermum marginatum (C. Agardh). Gas chromatography (GC) and gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GC-MS) were used to analyze the composition of the essential oil. Total phenolics assay demonstrated a high value in hexane extract (HE), with a lower value for chloroform extract (CE), and the lowest value for methanol extract (ME). DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazyl) assay showed that extracts of S. marginatum possess radical scavenging activity (RSA). Tests of the antioxidant property of the extracts revealed both electron and hydrogen transfer mechanisms. The antibacterial activity of the ME, CE, and HE as well as an ethanol extract was estimated against seven Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. The ethanol extract showed the highest antibacterial activity, and the HE showed the lowest.

Mushrooms are able to accumulate both primary and secondary metabolites. Medicinal and antioxidant properties of mushrooms are an excellent combination of their nutrition value. Recent studies have demonstrated that edible mushroom species contain non–hallucinogenic indole compounds and their derivatives. The indole skeleton is the basis of the substances serving important functions in the human body, such as serotonin and melatonin. These compounds fulfill the role of neurotransmitters or their precursors, exhibit antioxidant, anticancer, anti–aging actions, regulate the diurnal cycle in humans and participate in blood coagulation. These compounds and their derivatives are also anti– inflammatory and analgesic therapeutics.

Rhaponticum carthamoides plants ("maral root") are widely used in Siberian folk medicine. The present study reports for the first time the presence of pentacyclic terpenoid, α-amyrin, in methanol extract from leaves of this plant. α-Amyrin induced proliferation of human keratinocytes (HaCaT) by about 18% while other extract components were ineffective. A panel of biochemical and cell-based assays testing the antioxidative and cytoprotective activites of α-amyrin indicated no antioxidative activity of this compound. α-Amyrin did not protect HaCaT cells against the damage caused by UVB radiation.

The methanol extract of the aerial parts of Celosia trigyna (Amaranthaceae) was successively fractionated using n-hexane, dichloromethane, ethyl acetate and n-butanol. The cytotoxic activity of the obtained fractions was investigated using sulphorhodamine-B (SRB) assay against three carcinoma cell lines; breast adenocarcinoma (MCF-7), colorectal carcinoma (HCT-116) and hepatocellular carcinoma cells (HepG2). The dichloromethane fraction showed significant in vitro cytotoxic activities against the human cancer cell lines HCT-116 and HEP-G2 with IC50 values of 10.9 and 11.2 µg/mL, respectively, while all fractions revealed weak antioxidant activity using DPPH free radical scavenging method. The GC-MS analysis of the most cytotoxic dichloromethane fraction has resulted in the identification of 12 compounds. The main constituents were tetrahydroisoquinoline derivative (31.44%), 2,3-dimethylheptadecane (16.71%) and 3-octadecanone (15.56%). Moreover, the phytochemical study of the dichloromethane and n-butanol fractions led to the isolation and identification of five known compounds identified as β-amyrin acetate (1), acacetin 8-C-α-rhamnosyl-(1→2)-β-glucopyranoside (2), apigenin 8-C-α-rhamnosyl-(1→2)-β-glucopyranoside (3), quercetin 3-O-α-rhamnosyl-(1→6)-β-glucopyranoside (4) and 3-hydroxyglutaric acid (5).

Extrusion cooking technology was applied for obtaining corn extrudates fortified with various level (10-20%) of rosehip pomace powder or apple pomace powder. The total polyphenols content, antioxidant activities (ABTS), organoleptic properties and colour of the extrudates were determined. Pomace addition increased the level of total polyphenols content and antioxidant activity in obtained corn - pomace extrudates, especially in samples enriched with rosehip pomace. Extrudates with 20% of rosehip pomace addition characterized the highest polyphenols content and antioxidant activity. Only the slight decrease of some quality features - shape and size, taste and fl avour, structure and colour of obtained extrudates was observed. Sample with fruit pomace addition showed increasing consistency evaluation. The extruded products by utilising fruit by-products got good evaluation of panelists and can be an excellent source of bioactive compounds in the daily human diet.

We determined the in vitro antioxidant activity of methanolic extracts from the shoots and roots of Scutellaria species (S. altissima and S. alpina) against the action of strong oxidants: hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and H2O2+Fe2+ (donor of hydroxyl radicals) on plasma proteins and lipids. Lipid peroxidation in human plasma was measured by the level of thiobarbituric acid reactive species (TBARS). Protein oxidation was measured by quantitation of thiol group. We observed that the extracts (5-50 µg ml-1) containing phenolic compounds from both Scutellaria species distinctly reduced oxidation of lipids and proteins in human plasma treated with H2O2. These results also indicated that the extracts have a protective effect against oxidative damage to the human plasma lipids and proteins by induced hydroxyl radical. The main components of the plant materials analysed were flavonoids, present as aglycones (luteolin) or glycosides (cynaroside, baicalin, wogonoside). In all of the extracts, the phenylethanoid verbascoside was also found. The properties of the tested plant extracts were also compared with the action of a well characterised commercial antioxidative polyphenolic extract from the berries of Aronia melanocarpa (Aronox®). The comparative studies indicated that the analysed plant extracts were comparable to or even more effective in reducing the oxidation processes than the A. melanocarpa extract. The present study suggests that natural extracts from S. altissima and S. alpina have antioxidant activities and, therefore, may be beneficial in the prevention of diseases related to oxidant stress, such as cancer, cardiovascular, and inflammatory diseases.

Backround: The present review focuses on electrochemical methods for antioxidant capacity and its main contributors assessment. The main reactive oxygen species, responsible for low density lipoprotein oxidation, and their reactivity are reminded. The role of antioxidants in counteracting the factors leading to oxidative stress-related degenerative diseases occurence, is then discussed. Antioxidants can scavenge free radicals, can chelate pro-oxidative metal ions, or quench singlet oxygen. When endogenous factors (uric acid, bilirubin, albumin, metallothioneins, superoxide dismutase, catalase, glutathione peroxidase, glutathione reductase, glutathione-S-transferase) cannot accomplish their protective role against reactive oxygen species, the intervention of exogenous antioxidants (vitamin C, tocopherols, flavonoids, carotenoids etc) is required, as intake from food, as nutritional supplements or as pharmaceutical products. Literature study: The main advantages of electrochemical methods with respect to traditional, more laborious instrumental techniques are described: sensitivity, rapidity, simplicity of the applied analytical procedure which does not require complicated sample pre-treatment etc. The paper reviews minutiously the voltammetric, amperometric, biamperometric, potentiometric and coulometric methods for total antioxidant capacity estimation. For each method presented, the electroactivity and the mechanism of electro-oxidation of antioxidant molecules at various electrodes, as well as the influences on the electroactive properties are discussed. The characteristics of the developed methods are viewed from the perspective of the antioxidant molecule structure influence, as well as from the importance of electrode material and/or surface groups standpoint. The antioxidant molecule-electrode surface interaction, the detection system chosen, the use of modifiers, as well as the nature of the analysed matrix are the factors discussed, which influence the performances of the studied electrochemical techniques. Conclusions: The electrochemical methods reviewed in this paper allow the successful determination of the total antioxidant capacity and of its main contributors in various media: foodstuffs and beverages, biological fluids, pharmaceuticals. The advantages and disadvantages of the electrochemical methods applied to antioxidant content and antioxidant activity assay are treated and interpreted, in the case of various analysed matrixes. Combining advanced materials with classical electrode construction, provides viable results and can constitute an alternative for the future.

The tremendous rise in development of resistance to antimicrobials has created an alarming situation for researchers and clinicians. In this regard, an attempt has been made to develop a series of azole-based derivatives. The presented study consists of the design and synthesis of some newer derivatives by incorporating the isoxazole nucleus in the pharmacophore. These are also characterized physicochemically and by spectral means (IR and microanalysis). Moreover, the antioxidant activity of these derivatives was assessed using DPPH radical scavenging methods Finally, all of the newly isolated compounds were tested for their antimicrobial activities. Herein, antimicrobial screening using the agar disc diffusion method revealed that the majority of the derivatives are most active.

The present study provides a comprehensive data on the antioxidant, antimicrobial and neutrophil-modulating activities of extracts from six medicinal plants - blackberry (Rubus fruticosus) leaves, chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa) leaves, hawthorn (Crataegus monogyna) leaves, lady's mantle (Alchemilla glabra) aerial parts, meadowsweet (Filipendula ulmaria) aerial parts and raspberry (Rubus idaeus) leaves. In order to analyze the antioxidant activity of the herbs, several methods (ORAC, TRAP, HORAC and inhibition of lipid peroxidation) were used. Blackberry leaves and meadowsweet extracts revealed the highest antioxidant activities via all methods. All extracts studied blocked almost completely the opsonized zymosan particle-activated ROS production by neutrophils from human whole blood. On the other hand, the effect of extracts on phorbol myristate acetate-activated ROS production was much milder and even nonsignificant in the case of chokeberry leaves. This latter result suggests that extracts (apart from their antioxidative activity) interfere with the signaling cascade of phagocyte activation upstream of the protein kinase C activation. The antimicrobial activity of the investigated extracts against 11 human pathogens was investigated using three different methods. Meadowsweet and blackberry leaves extracts had the highest antimicrobial effect and the lowest minimal inhibiting concentrations (MICs) against the microorganisms tested.

Chitosan could be an alternative to synthetic plant protection chemicals commonly used in strawberry cultivation. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of chitosan with different molecular weights on the yield, health, and quality of Korona cultivar strawberries. The largest number of strawberries was harvested from plants sprayed with chitosan with a molecular weight of 50k kDa (611 g/plant). On the other hand, the largest (1017 g/100 fruit) and the firmest (225 G mm) strawberries were harvested from plants sprayed with chitosan125k kDa. Compared with the control, chitosan with a molecular weight >50 kDa also increased the contents of l-ascorbic acid and polyphenols and the antioxidant activity and improved fruit colour compared with the control. The plants were also more resistant to grey mould infestation. The experiment has shown that how chitosan interacts with fruit depends on its molecular weight, and chitosan with a higher molecular weight has a better effect on most traits determining fruit quality.

The main factor in growing flowers for forcing is their rate of growth, on account of the fact that in short period of time it is necessary to grow quickly a large number of flowers and to cut them simultaneously. The influence of growth regulators ( ) based on heterylcarbon acid on the forcing of tulips in greenhouse conditions (winter period) was studied. It was determined that the application of of the basic within tulip’s forcing period reduces in average to 5 days (from all period of forcing). In case of application the tulip’s forcing period also reduces to 3 days (from all period of forcing) compared with a control group of tulips. The ability of the plant growth regulators under research to accelerate growing properties of flowers is associated with the presence of heterylcarbon acid and potassium ions in their structure of substances. These growth regulators relate to non-toxic compounds and possess antioxidant properties.
