The paper deals with screen fictional violence (TV and cinema). The analysis focuses on the genres of gangster, war, horror and action films. The interesting point in the paper is the evolution of means of violence visualization, until the postmodernist version without context or interpretation. The psychology of reception and the paradox of receptive pleasures drawn from watching brutal scenes are analyzed in the paper. The author underlines the variety of explanations and sources of this kind of pleasures. However, one must admit that there is more than one universal theory in this field.

(Polish title: Przemoc w rodzinie - charakterystyka zjawiska na terenie wojewodztwa lubelskiego na podstawie analizy danych udostepnionych przez policje). The issue of domestic violence has been widely described - its specific character, variety of aspects involved, its epidemiology and the influence of violence on psychological functions of the family. Then the results of analyses of police reports with data referring to the range of violence in Lublin region were presented. The results have been critically discussed and have led to the following conclusions: the number of police interventions in Lublin region is increasing every year, which means that on one hand the rate of violence is unfortunately getting bigger , and on the other hand the awareness of victims and their trust in the police institution hopefully increase; the highest in numbers are women victims, children are next; victims that come from villages less frequently turn to the police for help in the case of violence; violence is more intense in families with alcoholic problems.

The authoress' aim is to describe and interpret the connection between media literacy and critical pedagogy which appear in the works of Michel Foucault, Pierre Bourdieu and Henry Giroux. Much attention is paid to issues, such as symbolic and iconic violence, critical analysis, empowerment, cultural reproduction, the main interests of media literacy, and the problem of using popular culture and media study in the pedagogical process. She considers the special status of media images and the problem of the degree to which they correspond with reality, the process of decoding cultural texts and the role of audiovisual competence. The authoress presents the most important views concerning the pragmatics of media images and their influences on social life, and the difference between critical and non-critical pedagogy in the context of cultural reproduction, and symbolic violence in the communication process.

The study focuses on the process of ethnographic field research among homeless people from the perspective of researcher. It presents methodological approaches vis-á-vis initial ideas about the field research before going out to the field. The study covers the problematic aspects of the course of the research, from entry in the field up to the generation of data in relation to the changing positionality of the researcher. It shows how the relationship between the contact persons and the researcher changes in a given situation on the basis of the different characteristic features of the public and the private space and the forms of power that affect this space. Emphasis is placed on gender issues in the field and on how this fact influences the field research, contacts and the researcher. It describes the various forms and contexts of violence, from symbolic up to sexual ones. The study asks questions about how violence can be minimised during field research, and offers proposals for solutions.

Intention of the violence is put in the nature of social realistic art of the 1940s–1950s that had an effect on forming the creative works of P. Zagrebelny, Val. Shevchuk, O. Honchar. The change of an aesthetic code in the 1980s and necessity to compete with younger generation (also the latent mechanisms of creative defeat) have forced representatives of the given generation to deduce desire like basic component of novelistic structure. In case of Zagrebelny it has led to treason to the canon and negation of own creativity, in the case of Shevchuk — to deformation of the aesthetic object. Significant erotomania which we can see in the works of the “generation of the sixties” is not only a tribute to the process of commercialization but also a chronic illness of the generation.

The key quality of contemporary Croatian literary production is the simultaneous existence of several individual poetics. We could choose to follow the formation of certain groups or identify common denominators (women’s writing, war writing, body writing, new realism). In this essay I’ll concentrate on female authors of the last two decades who are dealing with body topics in their works. In this essay I would prefer to interpret the novels published by Irena Vrkljan, Slavenka Drakulić, Daša Drndić and Dubravka Ugrešić, bearing in mind the thematic focus of their novels: a body confronted to illness, sexual and war violence, the pasing of time.

The article discusses the practice of bride kidnapping in Kyrgyzstan. The article was written on the basis of ethnographic studies conducted in Kyrgyzstan in summer 2005. The author describes this controversial practice and analyses some of its aspects - violence, temporal dimension and collectivity. This practice, common in modern Kyrgyzstan, although many women have a very negative opinion about it, is an accepted form of marriage. Bride kidnapping is a much diversified phenomenon, having many meanings and representing different motivations of the actors. It also assumes many forms - from forceful kidnapping of the girl who has been seen for the first time to an arranged meeting with the fiancée, who is taken to the groom's family home, in which case it can be a way of circumventing the disapproval of the parents. The article describes marriage by capture as a dramatic and multidimensional event, which radically changes the life of the kidnapped victims.

CRITICISM OF PSYCHOLOGICAL RESEARCH ON VIOLENCE IN VIDEO GAMES. THE CASE OF CHRISTOPHER J. FERGUSON

In the article author describes a preventive system initiated by the Reverend John Bosco, who was an Italian priest who lived in the 19th century. His system absolutely rejected any type of corporal punishment, as it was thought to be an ineffective way of upbringing. In his pedagogical activity the Reverend John Bosco took care of desolated young boys whom he provided protection and education. Thanks to that many illiterate boys belonging to criminal groups were able to get a profession and could honestly work for themselves. The Reverend John Bosco tried to increase number of oratorios and schools and at the same time wanted to found a new friar congregation. He successfully established the Society of Salesians and from 150 years it runs many different social institutions, including the Salesianic educational centre in Rozanystok. The main goal of the research made for the article is the diagnosis of the Salesianic educational centre in Rozanystok in terms of cohesion of punishment and rewards to assumptions of preventive system. The research has been made with the use of the so-called monographic method. The author proves that in that specific institution no one uses corporal punishment, in fact the only form of punishing is lack of privileges. In the most dii cult cases a pupil who causes problems that harms the whole group can be punished by transferring to another institution. The system of punishments and rewards characterized in the article may be an inspiration for pedagogical educators and teachers who use the methods described in their work.

The relation between love and violence is a difficult theme to restrain. It was the leading point of my research in what cornced my Master Thesis. In that thesis I investigated the way how Vergilio Ferreira kept a relation between love and violence in all his work. In the present paper I intend to present, brifely, the result of my research, trying to answer to the folowing question: how is the relation, the ways of contamination and inter conection between love and violence on Vergilio Ferreira’s work?

Violence in television and its influence upon people under 18. Commonly observed aggressiveness and the growing number of juvenile delinquents as well as reports on children bullying other children make it necessary to seriously challenge the problem of the influence of TV violence upon children and adolescents. The analyses presented herein are an attempt to look at the relation from a psychological and pedagogical perspective.

Violence, including violence committed by youth, can be by using 'thick description' identified as specific human behaviour, focused on extortion of carrying out the wishes, interests, acts, commands, and regulations. Violence is in the most of the cases associated with power or predominance. The 'thick description' represents very detailed, literally microscopic reckoning of what is violence and it originated from paradigm and theoretical-methodological concept of phenomenology. Aggression and violence, in a similar way as money, became universal fetishes of the contemporary societies. They are becoming a generally recognised issue in which probably all people are interested in. There are discouraging theories and according to them the increasing violence and aggression became the symptom of self-destruction of our civilization which draw its universality and legitimacy from its constitutional non-violence. By aggression we often refer to offensive behaviour, which usually follows as a reaction to real or apparent threat of one's own (above all) authority, and is very often a demonstration of anger. The sociological meaning of aggression contains also an intention, i.e. intentional abuse. On the present we are witnesses of the continuing discussions if aggression is primal meaningful force which enables solutions of the aims in life and the life's questions or if it is destructive potential in a human being which has to be necessarily shunted by upbringing or training (self training). The determination of violence is very inaccurate although it forms part of our everyday experience. It denotes the most frequent definition of one-shot act or more precisely procedure where at a human being causes a personal injury to someone else. Other characteristics discuss any acts including neglect which influences life, physical and psychical integrity, individual liberty and it discusses any other acts impairing personal development. The multivalent concept of violence gives evidence the fact that it is also used for definition of a form of intervention in the different types of the relations (interpersonal, foreign, relations between institutions) and its sphere is modified by the legal authorities. The essential categories of violence are pain and threat of suffering. Violence that is causing harm is a source of helplessness of a victim and at the same time it is a demonstration of a perpetrator's dominant power over her or his victim. The whole society as well as social sciences should concentrate their efforts in search for solutions for the continuous and growing violence, as a global phenomenon in which an important role will have to be played not only by the state and the public administration but also by all spheres of civil society.

The article provides an overview of René Girard’s anthropology, which is focused on the notions of desire and violence. The paper begins with an introduction to his theory of mimetic desire as the main force of inter-individual relations and the fundamental category of his anthropology. It then shows how violence emerges through mimetic conflict. Next, the essay moves on to discuss the scapegoat mechanism and the relation between violence and the sacred in archaic societies. It also examines his conception of Judeo-Christian demystification of mimesis and the surrogate victim. Finally, it attempts to contextualise his work in relation to modern philosophy.

Contrary to what is often thought, the structuralist approach has never been adopted in French sociology very extensively. When speaking about structuralism in this discipline, the work of Pierre Bourdieu is generally referred to. The present paper is intentionally heading in another direction and is questioning Levi-Straussian traces in Baudrillard's theory of the consumer society. First, Baudrillard acknowledges being in debt to Levi-Strauss for his conception of consumption as a language. In this perspective exchanged goods are understood as object-signs. We believe nevertheless that Baudrillard goes even further when he analyzes the phenomenon of absurd violence, bearing in mind - even he does not directly disclose it - Levi-Strauss' concept of 'free signifier'. All the same we finally conclude that Baudrillard's use of Levi-Strauss is rather cursory. Despite this fact it is of interest: Thus we follow Baudrillard's analysis and consider the problem of social criticism, which is one of the main topics of his writings here discussed.

Bosnia-Herzegovina’s governance depends on a constitution that was drafted in Dayton, Ohio. It designates the Bosniacs, Croats and Serbs (along with Others) the country’s constituent peoples. Although Jews have been residents of Bosnia-Herzegovina for 500 years, with the country’s new constitution they have disappeared from official records into the residual category of Others. This article considers how, nonetheless, the Jews of Sarajevo persist as an active community and a named group even as its identity is being defined by others. The interrelated questions, “Whose Jews? Whose Bosnia? Whose Europe?” have no neat, finite answers while Jews-as-Others and Bosnia as an ethnically divided and overdetermined, EU-supervised country remain precariously perched on unsettled and unsettling configurations of rights and power.

The article has to do with the issue of war and violence in the thought of Emmanuel Levinas. According to him war is not only a traumatic historical event, but also a peculiar ontological state resulting from the peculiar way of thinking of Europeans. He considers how war is connected with the notions of whole, identity, and objectivity, why history is at fault, and why the only solution is eschatology, which challenges individuals and calls them to responsibility. The relationship between war and morality is at the center of the thought of Levinas. He sensitizes the reader to the fact that war is always a latent possibility, a constant hidden threat, always unexpected. War, as well as violence and force broadly understood, always change the world order, and with it accepted principles, rules, and values. It is an event that seeks to eliminate otherness, that tends to a uniform whole by leveling differences. Pluralism must give way to the totalizing aspirations of war.

The article analyses the literary image of forcible re-Catholicization and maps its perception against the background of the confessional determined reception of the historical novel Odkaz mŕtvych (Message from the Dead). The reception of Rázus’ novel was influenced by Protestant and Catholic historical memory, which included the images of the bad Jesuits or the good Jesuits. The stereotype of the bad Jesuits was updated and politically exploited in the conditions of the totalitarian Ľudák regime. Thus the novel contributed to strengthening anti-regime views in some segments of the reading public.
