The new species Reticulophragmium vidonioensis Kaminski & Crespo de Cabrera is newly described from the subsurface Vidono Formation of northeastern Venezuela. The foraminiferal assemblage is dated as Zone P3 (mid Paleocene), and represents an outer neritic-upper bathyal biofacies. Reticulophragmium vidonioensis n.sp. displays very primitive morphological features, and illustrates the close evolutionary relationship between the earliest Paleocene alveolar genus Reticulophragmium and the non-alveolar genus Haplophragmoides.

A collection of 360 oriented samples of igneous rocks from the western part of the Antarctic Peninsula (Argentine Islands Archipelago, Penola Strait area), has yielded well-defined palaeomagnetic directions. Age determinations by various methods showed a Late Cretaceous-Paleocene time interval for the rocks studied. The characteristic remanent magnetisation (ChRM) was isolated by a stepwise thermal demagnetisation mostly in the temperature interval 450-580 degreesC. It is evidently a primary magnetisation. The rocks along the coastline of the western part of the Antarctic Peninsula (AP) were emplaced during the Cretaceous Normal Superchron while the rocks from the islands with reversed polarity are of Paleocene. New Cretaceous (112-85 Ma) and Paleocene (60 Ma) palaeomagnetic poles for the passive continental margin of the Antarctic Peninsula fit well with a synthetic East Antarctica apparent polar wander path and confirms that the AP did not undergo latitudinal displacement for the last 100 Ma. The palaeomagnetic pole for 60 Ma shows a slight shift from palaeopoles obtained for the South Shetland Islands which implies that the South Shetland block is characterized by own tectonic evolution and probable anticlockwise rotation during the Paleocene.

Upper Cretaceous to lower Palaeogene carbonate and siliciclastic deposits that crop out widely in the Haymana and Polatlı districts (Ankara Province) of the Haymana Basin (Central Anatolia) are rich in larger benthic foraminifera, various macrofossils and ichnofossils. The ichnofossils of the Haymana and Yeşilyurt formations were studied at five localities. The Upper Cretaceous siliciclastics of the Haymana Formation contain moderately diverse trace fossils, belonging to the deep-sea Nereites ichnofacies. The Paleocene siliciclastic and carbonate deposits of the Yeşilyurt Formation comprise similar trace fossils, which do not show significant changes in comparison to the Haymana Formation. This indicates that the K-Pg boundary extinction event did not affect the ichnofauna with any longer consequences. The Upper Cretaceous coarser, siliciclastic deposits of the Haymana and Beyobası formations are rich in shallow-marine, larger benthic foraminifera, including species of Orbitoides, Omphalocyclus, Siderolites, Hellenocyclina, and Loftusia, whereas fine siliciclastic deposits contain abundant planktonic, open-marine foraminifera, such as Globotruncana and Heterohelix. Palaeogene siliciclastic to carbonate deposits of the Kartal, Yeşilyurt and Çaldağ formations are rich in the larger, benthic foraminifera Nummulites, Discocyclina, Assilina and Alveolina. The larger foraminifers have been redeposited from nearby, shallow-marine parts of the basin.

This paper describes a new Paleogene deep-water agglutinated foraminifera from the Contessa Highway Section, Umbria-Marche Basin, Italy. The new species Arenoturrispirillina waskowskae is characterised by its predominently high trochospiral coiling, which distinguishes it from the genus Glomospira. The new species is also found in the Polish Carpathians.

Radiolarian and agglutinated foraminiferal fauna within upper deposits of the Skole Unit of the Polish Flysch Outer Carpathians occur in the Variegated Shale and Hieroglyphic formations of Paleocene and Eocene age. About 70 radiolarian and 50 foraminiferal species have been identified and their stratigraphic distribution determined using both regional and local biozonations. Five radiolarian zones: the Bekoma bidartensis Interval Zone, the Buryella clinata Interval Zone, the Phormocyrtis striata striata Interval Zone, the Theocotyle cryptocephala Interval Zone and the Dictyoprora mongolfieri Interval Zone in the lower Eocene and in the lower part of the middle Eocene have been distinguished. In the upper part of the middle Eocene and in the uper Eocene the abundance of radiolarians decreases and their age assignment has not been possible. Five foraminiferal zones have been distinguished and correlated with radiolarian zones based on co-occurrence of both Protista groups in the deposits investigated. These are: the Rzehakina fissistomata Zone, the Saccamminoides carpathicus Zone, the Reticulophragmium amplectens Zone, the Ammodiscus latus Zone and the Cyclammina rotundidorsata Zone covering the time span from upper Paleocene to upper Eocene.

We present a systematic study of late Paleocene macrofauna from methane seep carbonates and associated driftwood in the shallow marine Basilika Formation, Spitsbergen, Svalbard. The fauna is composed of 22 taxa, comprising one brachiopod, 14 bivalves, three gastropods, three crustaceans, and one bony fish. The reported fish remains are among the first vertebrate body fossils from the Paleogene of Spitsbergen. One genus is new: the munidid decapod Valamunida Klompmaker and Robins gen. nov. Four new species are described: the terebratulide brachiopod Neoliothyrina nakremi Bitner sp. nov., the protobranch bivalve Yoldiella spitsbergensis Amano sp. nov., the xylophagain bivalve Xylophagella littlei Hryniewicz sp. nov., and the munidid decapod Valamunida haeggi Klompmaker and Robins gen. et sp. nov. New combinations are provided for the mytilid bivalve Inoperna plenicostata, the thyasirid bivalve Rhacothyas spitzbergensis, the ampullinid gastropod Globularia isfjordensis, and the munidid decapod Protomunida spitzbergica. Thirteen taxa are left in open nomenclature. The fauna contains a few last occurrences of Cretaceous survivors into the Paleocene, as well as first occurrences of Cenozoic taxa. It is composed of chemosymbiotic thyasirid bivalves and background species common in the northern Atlantic and Arctic during the Paleocene. Our results provide no evidence for a Paleocene origin of vesicomyid and bathymodiolin bivalves typical for Eocene and younger seep environments; instead, the Paleo cene seeps of the Basilika Formation are more similar to their Late Cretaceous equi valents rich in thyasirids.

Adapisoriculidae are an enigmatic group of small mammals known from the late Cretaceous of India, and from the early Palaeocene to early Eocene of Europe and Africa. Based on their primitive dental morphology, they have been classified as didelphids, nyctitheriids, leptictids, mixodectids, tupaiids, and palaeoryctids. While the latest hypothesis based on dental morphology suggests an affinity with Lipotyphla, postcranial remains indicate a close relationship with Euarchonta. Here, we present new adapisoriculid dental remains from the early Palaeocene locality of Hainin (Belgium). Adapisoriculidae are particularly abundant in Hainin, where they represent about one third of the mammalian fauna, offering new insights into both their specific and generic phylogenetic interrelationships. We describe three new species (Afrodon gheerbranti sp. nov., Bustylus folieae sp. nov. and Proremiculus lagnauxi gen. et sp. nov.) and document the previously unknown lower dentition of Bustylus marandati. The diversity of dental morphologies observed in the Hainin fauna suggests different interrelationships than previously suggested. In particular, the genus Proremiculus is considered morphologically intermediate between Afrodon and Remiculus, and the latter is no longer recognised as the sister group of Adapisoriculus. Although the highest diversity of adapisoriculids occurs in Europe, the oldest and most primitive members of the family were found in India and Africa, respectively. The geographic origin of the family could thus be located in any of these three continents, depending on the importance attributed to each of these factors. The coexistence of primitive and derived adapisoriculids at Hainin might indicate a very quick diversification in Europe, probably starting around the K−T boundary.

Mantodea are rather scarce in the fossil record, especially those belonging to the mantise crown group. Four fossil mantids are described from the lowermost Eocene amber of Oise (France), two Chaeteessidae considered as “genus and species incertae sedis”, and two Mantoididae, described as a new genus and species Pseudomantoida extendidera. We also describe a new specimen of Arvernineura insignis from the Paleocene of Menat (France), confirming the attribution of this taxon to the Chaeteessidae. These fossils are of great interest for future dating of the crown group Mantodea, being the oldest Chaeteessidae and Mantoididae. We propose a new genus name Louispitonia nom. nov. in replacement of Archaeophlebia Piton, 1940 preoccupied by Archaeophlebia Ris, 1909 (Odonata) with Archaeophlebia enigmatica as its type species.

The aim of this work is to present geological structure of the Krynica Subunit of the Magura Nappe in southern part of the Gorce and Beskid Sądecki Mountains and along the Pieniny Klippen Belt (PKB). Formal lithostratigraphic units were distinguished on the basis of mapping. The lithostratigraphic units are the age of Middle Paleocene - Middle Eocene age. Flysch deposits were classified as the Szczawnica Formation with the Życzanów Member, Zarzecze Formation and Piwniczna Member of the Magura Formation in the investigated area. Strike-slip faults and faulted formations complicate the geological structure of the described region. The creation some of these faults is connected with andesite intrusions. Strong faulted strata occurs in the southern part of the region along the overthrust of the Pieniny Klippen Belt on the Magura Nappe. The contact line between the Pieniny Klippen Belt and Paleogene of the Magura Nappe is heterogeneous. The evidences of it are outcrops of klippen, which occur within the Szczawnica Formation and the Zarzecze Formation

Vastan Lignite Mine in southeastern Gujarat, India, produces the oldest known Cenozoic land−mammals and the only early Eocene continental vertebrate fauna known from India (e.g., Bajpai et al. 2005; Rana et al. 2005, 2008; Rose et al. 2006, 2008, 2009; Smith et al. 2007; Rage et al. 2008). The fauna comes from the Cambay Shale Formation and has been dated as middle Ypresian (~52 Ma, early Cuisian) based on a common nummulitid foraminiferan from about 15 m above the vertebrate−producing layer (Sahni et al. 2006; Rana et al. 2008). However, a recent study of dinoflagellate cysts from the section suggests that the deposits may be as old as 54–55 Ma (Garg et al. 2008). Although some elements of the fauna, such as anthracobunids and lagomorphs, have Asian affinities, a surprising number of taxa among the snakes, bats, insectivores, primates, rodents, and artiodactyls appear to be most closely related to early Eocene European or North American taxa. This may simply reflect the poor state of knowledge of contemporary south Asian vertebrate faunas; alternatively, it might be evidence of previously unsuspected early Eocene faunal exchange between Europe and southwest Asia. We report here two teeth of a tillodont from Vastan Mine, which constitute the first record of the mammalian order Tillodontia known from India. Despite the much greater generic diversity of tillodonts in Asia than elsewhere, the Vastan tillodont shows clear affinities with Euramerican esthonychines.

We describe a new echinoid assemblage, composed of specimens of Bolbaster sp., Cyclaster danicus (Schlüter, 1897), Diplodetus vistulensis (Kongiel, 1950) and Linthia? sp. in a distinctive phosphatic preservation, from the so-called Greensand, a marly glauconitic sandstone horizon at the base of the Danian succession in the Kazimierz Dolny area (central Poland). This assemblage presumably is of early Danian age, with Cyclaster danicus occurring in the lower Danian of Denmark and southern Sweden. The specimens are preserved as internal moulds, composed of phosphatised glauconitic sandstone, occasionally with some test material adhering. The genesis of these moulds involved the following steps: (1) infilling of tests of dead echinoids with glauconitic sand; (2) penetration of the infills by coelobiotic deposit-feeding organisms that produced burrows along the inner test surface; (3) early-diagenetic cementation of infills by calcium phosphate; and (4) exhumation and intraformational reworking of specimens, leading to abrasion, fragmentation and loss of test material in some individuals. Co-occurring are unphosphatised moulds of Echinocorys ex gr. depressa (von Eichwald, 1866) and Pseudogibbaster cf. depressus (Kongiel in Kongiel and Matwiejewówna, 1937), which may represent a younger (middle to late Danian) assemblage. Additionally, the presence of derived late Maastrichtian echinoids, e.g., Temnocidaris (Stereocidaris) ex gr. herthae (Schlüter, 1892), Pleurosalenia bonissenti (Cotteau, 1866) and Hemicara pomeranum Schlüter, 1902, is confirmed for the Greensand, based on new material and re- examination of previously recorded specimens. In summary, members of three echinoid assemblages of different age and preservation occur together in the Greensand. Our results are compatible with former interpretations of this unit as a condensed, transgressive lag with mixed faunas of different age and provenance. However, they are incompatible with the hypothesis that phosphatised Danian fossils preserved in the Greensand are derived from a facies equivalent, now gone, of the lower Danian Cerithium Limestone in eastern Denmark, because all moulds are composed of phosphatised glauconitic sandstone that is utterly different from the calcareous dinocyst-dominated, fine crystalline matrix of the Cerithium Limestone.

Isolated cheek teeth from the late Puercan (early Paleocene) Split Lip Flats local fauna, from the head of Willow Wash, Nacimiento Formation, San Juan Basin, represent a new genus and species of hyopsodontid “condylarth”, Chacomylus sladei. The teeth are small, bunodont, and are remarkable for the enlargement of the protocone, pronounced exodaenodonty, and high degree of attritional wear caused by transverse shearing or grinding. Although C. sladei bears a superficial resemblance to the apheliscine apheliscid Gingerichia, a preliminary phylogenetic analysis confirms that it is a hyopsodontid, closely related to the Puercan hyopsodontids Valenia wilsoni and Litomylus orthronepius.

The paper presents the detailed plate tectonic, paleogeographic, paleoenvironment and plaeolithofacies maps for seven Cenozoic time intervals. Thirty five maps, generated using PLATES and PALEOMAP programs, contain information about plate tectonics, paleoenvironment, and paleolithofacies during Paleocene, Eocene, Oligocene, Miocene and Pliocene, time slices. The spatial reconstruction of basin architectures during their origin, expansion, closure and inversion as well as the dynamic of intrabasinal ridges were obtained by palinspastic modeling. This modeling utilized paleomagnetic data and stratigraphic-facies analysis of basins and ridges. Information contained within global and regional papers were selected and posted on the maps. The detailed paleoenvironment and plaeolithofacies zones were distinguished within the basins. The paleogeographic maps illustrate the geodynamic evolution of Earth from Late Cretaceous to Neogene, spreading and origin of new oceans, oceans closing, collisions, continents accretion and origin of new supercontinents.

New dental and postcranial remains of the alleged louisinine hyopsodontid “condylarth” Microhyus from the European Paleocene/Eocene transition are described, and prompt a reevaluation of the genus. New specimens belonging to Microhyus musculus from Dormaal (MP7, Belgium) provide the first evidence of the lower dentition of the type species. We describe M. musculus? from Pourcy (MP7, France) and cf. Microhyussp. from Berru (MP6a, France). A rich original assemblage of M. reisi from Silveirinha (MP7, Portugal) allows a detailed description of the morphological dental variation within that species. Well−preserved astragali and calcanei from Silveirinha can be confidently attributed to Microhyus reisi. Functional analysis of these elements suggests that Microhyus was a terrestrial mammal capable of rapid running or jumping. The pedal morphology of Microhyus is very similar to that of Paschatherium. These louisinines share some derived characters with the hyopsodontids Apheliscus and Haplomylus (e.g., the occurrence of a cotylar fossa on the astragalus) but they differ from Hyopsodus. Therefore, in view of the pedal morphology alone, the hyopsodontids may be polyphyletic. Given the dental similarities between Microhyus and the early representatives of the order Macroscelidea, we compared the tarsal morphology of louisinines with that of modern macroscelidids (Paleogene tarsal remains are currently unknown for this group). Macroscelidids and louisinines present some similarities in their astragalar morphology; however, the macroscelidid astragalus appears to be too specialized to be compared with that of Microhyus and Paschatherium.
