(Title in Polish - 'Uczyc sie demokracji. Wykorzystane i niewykorzystane szanse udzialu mlodziezy w szkolnej demokracji na przykladzie wybranych szkól srednich'), The article partly presents the results of studies conducted among this year's secondary school graduates from Zielona Góra. The excerpts presented in the article are a part of a wider research project entitled School Youth towards Democracy and Future. The purpose of the inquiries is to determine whether there are differences in experiencing school democracy between the youth from 'exclusive' Zielona Góra secondary schools and their peers from other schools and, if so, to what extent. This 'exclusive character' of schools was arbitrarily defined by the authors based on the state wide ranking of upper secondary schools, conducted on the basis of students' results, which was featured in a January 2007 issue of the 'Rzeczpospolita' newspaper. Two schools that were ranked highest among Zielona Góra upper secondary schools were E. Dembowski Secondary School No. 1 (18th place) and K. Kieslowski Secondary School No. 5 (58th place). In the Lubuskie province these occupy respectively the second and the sixth place, while in Zielona Góra they are two leading schools.

The author considers the problem of differences in school paths in relation to environments. His analysis of changes in secondary and tertiary education after 1990 in Poland clearly shows the spreading of this level of education. As a consequence, the chances for continuing education are not easily available although the number of secondary schools have increased. However, together with the spreading of access to general and technical secondary schools there has appeared their internal differentiation. As a result, rural youth more often - compared to urban youth of the same age - continue education at upper secondary schools which are characterized by lower educational results. The problem is that differences in school paths in relation to environments (rural areas vs. urban ones) are not exactly consequences of differences between school effects but rather of young people's choice. In the case of rural youth the choices are the result of a pessimistic view of their own educational and life chances. In effect, rural youth a bit less think about taking up studies, or they consider less prestigious fields of studies and universities because of an easier recruitment process. Thus, instead of old differences in school paths between rural and urban youth determined mainly by different types of secondary schools, there have appeared new ones, more delicate, occurring within the same type of school.

This contribution presents a comparison of the results of research up to present time of Silesian-Czech relations, or the levels of communication between both land metropolises, Prague and Wroclaw, in the Early Modern Age, based on the opportunities for study of archival material in the Wroclaw State Archives and the Municipal Archives of Prague. It throws light upon the structure of preserved archival material which can be used for the given purpose; methods of their evaluation, and the perspectives for future research. In its conclusion there is a foray into several groups of resources from the fields of trade, crafts, religion, and the migration of inhabitants, which confirms the limited contacts between the two cities in the Early Modern Age, also mentioned in literature and Shifts in these contacts only occurred in connection with changes of political development.
