The paper is an attempt at a theoretical setting of the contemporary German language and its development in the multidimensional, spatial and diachronically approached spectrum of language development in general. The presented reflections are in particular centred on the so-called standard German language variety, its degree of abstractness or realness, as well as the interconnections between the standard variety, dialects and written varieties.

The article attempts to present the impact of the co-existence of the Slavic and Germanic world on the formation of Slavic loanwords in German. The study focuses chiefly on the Russian loanwords in German. It presents and describes cultural, historical, political, and economic reasons for the transfer of the lexical elements of Russian origin to German. The aforementioned factors include: the impact of the hanseatic trade, political alliances, and conflicts. The work refers to loanwords of Russian origin that entered German throughout the ages. The article provides examples of words that describe typical Russian phenomena (e.g. Tundra), which counterparts had not existed in German before.

This article presents German loanwords in the Polish language. Its aim is twofold: to discuss words of German origin in Polish, as well as to stress Polish-German language contacts and their influences on vocabulary (a significant number of German loanwords refer to the building industry). The analysis will not only deal with the meaning and etymology of particular words, but will also scrutinize their description in the dictionaries of Polish edited by Doroszewski and Sobol.

Existing studies on plural acquisition in German have relied on small samples and thus hardly deliver generalizable and differentiated results. Here, overgeneralizations of certain plural allomorphs and other tendencies in the acquisition of German plural markers are described on the basis of test data from 7,394 3- to 5-yearold monolingual German and bi/multilingual immigrant children tested with a modified, validated version of the Marburger Sprachscreening (MSS) language test and 476 children tested with the SETK 3-5 language test. Classified correct and wrong answers to MSS and SETK 3-5 plural items were compared. The acquisition patterns of immigrants corresponded to those of younger German children. Both monolingual German and immigrant children demonstrated generally the same universal frequency and phonetically/phonologically based error patterns, irrespective of their linguistic background, but with different tendencies such as overgeneralization of -s by German children only.

The article presents research into borrowings from German to the Polish language. That research was initiated in the 19th century. German lexical borrowings were linked to other linguistic issues, such as morphology, syntax, phonology or semantic field theory. The most important researcher of German borrowings in Polish were Aleksander Bruckner, Leszek Moszyński, Ludwik Zabrocki, Wilhelm Kästner, Alicja Karszniewicz-Mazur etc. The article is a critical analysis of the most significant publications on this subject.

Not only does pluricentric German display characteristic features of Standard Average European, but it also comprises several distinguishing features in various contact areas with Baltic, Finno-Ugrian and Slavic languages. Like isoglosses, which constitute certain dialect areas in dialectology, bundled language contact phenomena distinguish certain contact areas from others. A major language contact area in Central Europe — merely one out of several — is the contact zone which we can associate with the former centre of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, with German, Hungarian, Czech and Slovak as its core languages as well as Polish, Slovene and others as its only partially involved peripheral languages. From this contact area, a micro-area emerged in Vienna and Eastern Austria that was particularly affected by the influence of Czech on German vice versa. This contribution illustrates how the latter language contact phenomena can fruitfully contribute to the process of teaching Czech as a foreign language in Austria.

Understanding in conflicting situations requires dialogue which in turn requires the effort of controlling oneself and of turning, together with the person one is speaking to, towards a solution of the problem. Rational Argumentation is the way to follow for both interlocutors, however different their views might be. Discussion and argumentation practice during Practical German classes for German Dapartment students have a double benefit: perfecting their conversation skills and imparting to them the universal value of the culture of communication.

Phrasemes that represent a short folklore genre are found in all languages. They can be used to enrich both the spoken and written language, and the ability to use them shows a skilful mastery of the language. The term kõnekäänd [speech + turn > turn of phrase], which marks instances of figurative language, first appeared in Estonian a couple of centuries ago. The present article explores written Estonian sources (dictionaries, grammars, textbooks, handbooks, and monographs, but also correspondence and handwritten collections) from the 17th century up to the 1920s, to find out how this term evolved and why it came into use. In so doing, some insights into German terms are also offered to explain the influence other languages had on the written language that was still developing back then.

This article presents Slavic loanwords in the Austrian variant of the German language. Its aim is twofold: it discusses words of Polish, Slovakian, Czech, Serbo-Croatian, and Slovenian origin in the Austrian variant of German, as well as stressing the multicultural history of Austria and its influence on vocabulary (a significant number of Slavic loanwords refer to culinary lexis denoting the names of Slavic meals). The analysis will not only deal with the meaning and etymology of particular words, but will also scrutinize their description in the “Duden” dictionaries: “Deutsches Universalwörterbuch” and “Duden.

Należą tu nazwiska z klas: «Witalność i jej brak»; «Chudość i otyłość / nieumiarkowanie w jedzeniu»; «Erudycja i prostactwo»

The study encompassed surnames of German origin, recorded in Warmia at the end of the 18th century. Its aim was to find out what values and anti-values were preserved in anthroponyms of the period. The study material was taken from the periodical “Zeitschrift für die Geschichte und Altertumskunde Ermlands“ from its special volume entitled “Die Bevölkerung des Ermlands 1773. Die ältesten Präsentationstabellen des Hochstifts. Band 3 – Register”. It is a cadastral register prepared by the Germans for fiscal purposes in Warmia after the first partition of Poland. The analysis was conducted on selected examples. The set of Warmian surnames indicates what values were most esteemed or what traits of personality or appearance attracted people’s attention. These are surnames belonging to the following classes: Vitality or a lack thereof; Thinness and obesity / Intemperance in eating; Erudition and crudeness.

The article is devoted to the analysis of the teaching methods of German students in the process of production of highly skilled professionals, the advantages of some of those methods and the expediency of the implementation taking into consideration the present state of the domestic education sector are substantiated. The author defined the features of teaching German as a second foreign language to the students-economists based on their English language knowledge. The pedagogical conditions that ensure the effectiveness of teaching German are determined. Innovative technologies that enable individualization and differentiation based capabilities of students: technology of activity method, activity-technology “Debates”, project-based learning technology and technology of cooperation are proposed. Technology of activity approach in the process of teaching second language should consist of a number of features and require special selection of methods and techniques for its study. In the process of studying the first foreign language the following issues are presented: pronunciation; reading rules; intonation; word order; coordination of articles; conjugation of verbs; complex grammatical structures; some words are pronounced similar, but have different meanings. The assignment in German and English languages proposed to the German group allows to use units of common themes at the level if word usage that facilitates the process of learning of second foreign language (the presence of a specific and indefinite article; the formation of three major forms of verbs; the use of the verb sein (to be), haben (to have). In the article the author has identified factors that intensify learning of German language based on English language, like: possession of the Latin alphabet; vocabulary (borrowing of English words that are similar to German); grammatical knowledge. It has been proved that learning German as a second foreign language must be based on phonetic and pronouncing parameters within the speech activity. Teaching and learning German as a second foreign language based on English should be carried out by comparing or contrasting the phonetics, vocabulary, grammar of native tongue, first and second foreign languages. Accordingly, the process of learning should be based on the amount of knowledgeand experience that had been gained in the process of learning of the first foreign language, and take into account the level of existing knowledge of the native language. Knowledge of grammar plays a significant role in the process of learning of German language. In this regard, the phonetic aspect of speech should be mastered aside of practical activity during the thematic mastering of vocabulary and grammar material.

This paper focuses on the toponyms (place names, field names) and the linguistic landscape in the Czech borderlands in the Jeseník region. Based on a combination of qualitative approaches (interviews with the locals) and quantitative ones (analysis of the toponyms in the linguistic landscape), the functions of German geographical names (and the German language in general) in this area are evaluated. The relationship of both local residents and local entrepreneurs to the German place and field names is also explored. The analysis reveals that the names of German origin are sometimes maintained and even revitalized. The revitalization of such names is influenced more by local entrepreneurs than by the local residents.

Interjections are units that occur mostly in spoken language. It has been claimed that these parts of speech are characteristic of text types whose function is to mimic speech, such as comic books. Having analysed selected German comic books, I discuss the morphological and syntactic features of interjections in this text type. I examine morphological phenomena: lengthening, doubling, and multiplication, as well as compositions of different subclasses of the investigated part of speech. Special focus in the analysis is placed on the Inflektive category, a term used in German linguistics, meaning bare verb stems, typical for comic books. Furthermore, I describe the syntactic features of interjections, considering their ability to function as independent utterances in comic books. In conclusion I demonstrate that certain subclasses of interjections are prone to form novel and independent expressions with other representatives of the analysed class, while other subclasses do not display such a tendency.
