The paper presents selected results of analyses of the properties of post-mining land of the former lignite mine „Przyjaźń Narodów” in the region of Łęknica in the Lubusz Voivodeship. The land formed in that area had very unfavourable properties: its granulometric composition (light clay sand) was susceptible to water erosion, the reaction of the formations was highly acid, the contents of total organic carbon and total nitrogen were varied and highest on the surface level of the profiles. The Ckh:Ckf ratios increased as the sampling depth increased. The development of opencast mining in the region of Łęknica (the Lubusz Voivodeship) has resulted in geomorphological changes. The post-mining land of the post-mining areas of the former lignite mine „Przyjaźń Narodów”, which started operating at the beginning of the 1970s, was subjected to reclamation processes. Reclamation in that area consisted of the following actions [7]: (a) land levelling with bulldozers; (b) soil deacidification with magnesium lime in the Zink Mill „Miasteczko Śląskie” in a dose of 50 Mg ha⁻¹; (c) mineral fertilisation: phosphorus powder in a dose of 5 Mg ha⁻¹, nitro-chalk in a dose of 200 kg ha⁻¹, ammonium phosphate in a dose of 200 kg ha⁻¹ and potash salt in a dose of 400 kg ha⁻¹; and (d) forestation of the area with Scots pines. Accumulation of organic matter is very important for restoring fertility in post-mining soils and improving their physical, chemical and biological properties [4]. Organic matter in soils undergoes complicated processes which often depend on oxygen-environmental conditions, and produce as a result a number of mineralization products. During the process of humification, humic substances are produced, various fractions of which differ in terms of their immunity to decomposition, time of existence in the environment, and at the same time they determine soil properties [6]. Those processes occur with the participation of microorganisms. Microorganisms in soils are both decomposers participating in the decomposition of organic matter produced by autotrophic organisms and organisms responsible for soil formation processes [1].

Praca zawiera wybrane wyniki analiz właściwości gruntów pokopalnianych byłej kopalni węgla brunatnego” Przyjaźń Narodów” w rejonie Łęknicy- województwo lubuskie. Powstałe grunty posiadały bardzo niekorzystne właściwości: skład granulometryczny (piasek gliniasty lekki) sprzyjał erozji wodnej, odczyn utworów był silnie kwaśny, zawartości węgla organicznego i azotu ogółem były silnie zróżnicowane i najwyższe w poziomach powierzchniowych profili. Stosunki Ckh:Ckf zwiększały się wraz ze wzrostem głębokości poboru próbek.

The concept of functional foods and the nutritional and health properties of ice cream were described. The proposals of modern technology in the production of probiotic ice cream were discussed. By examining the context of seasonality of ice cream consumption the questionnaire survey was carried out on the basis of which was to conclude the purchasing decisions of ice cream consumers, the buyers knowledge on its nutritional and health value and extent of interest in the new generation of this product i.e. probiotic ice cream included to functional food.

Column chromatography with preparative thin layer chromatography has been used to isolate two compounds from Thymi extractum fluidum. Identification of those compounds has been carried out by spectroscopic methods: LSIMS and UV. Isolated compounds are: 5,4’-dihydroxy-6,7,3’-trimethoxsyflavon (cirsilineol) and 5,4’-dihydroxy-6,7,8,3-tetramethoxyflavon (8-methoxycirsilineol).

Stosując połączone metody chromatografii kolumnowej i preparatywnej chromatografii cienkowarstwowej wyizolowano z Thymi extractum fluidum dwa związki. Ich identyfikację przeprowadzono metodami spektroskopowymi: LSIMS oraz UV. Wyizolowane związki to: 5,4’-dihydroksy-6,7,3’-trimetoksyflawon (kirsilineol) oraz 5,4’-dihydroksy-6,7,8,3’-tetrametoksyflawon (8-metoksykirsilineol).

The results of clinical studies revealed that gliclazide may reduce the risk of cancer in type 2 diabetic patients (T2DM), although the mechanism of possible protective effect is not sufficiently explored. The increased level of DNA damage and impaired DNA repair system in diabetes mellitus may play a substantial role in neoplastic transformation. Recently, we have demonstrated that gliclazide protected DNA against damage introduced by the oxidative stress, but its action on the DNA repair mechanisms is unclear. Therefore, the aim of this study was to assess whether gliclazide has any effect on the DNA repair pathways, e.g. nucleotide excision repair (NER) and non-homologous end joining (NHEJ). NER activity was assessed in the extract of human lymphocytes and pancreatic cancer cells (PANC-1) treated or not with gliclazide by use of an UV-irradiated plasmid as a substrate and by quantitative PCR performed to evaluate the efficacy of the removal of UV-induced lesions from the p53 gene by intact cells. The efficacy of NHEJ pathway was examined by a simple and rapid in vitro assay based on fluorescent detection of repair products. We did not observe significant differences between the efficiency of NER and NHEJ for extracts of lymphocytes alone and lymphocytes treated with gliclazide. Contrary, gliclazide increased the efficacy of NER (46.0% vs. 84.0%, p<0.01) and NHEJ (58.0% vs. 66.0%, p<0.05) in PANC-1 cells. In conclusion, the present study showed that gliclazide did not affect NER and NHEJ in human normal cells, but it may stimulate DNA repair in cancer cells.

Background: The aims of the present study were to assess whether the hard palate reveals any measurable sex-related differences, and to create a mathematical model which would differentiate between males and females using hard palate measurements alone. Materials and methods: The present study was conducted on 1,200 archived sinus computed tomography (CT) scans. Each cranial measurement was taken twice by the same observer, and in cases of any discrepancies, the mean of the two values was recorded. Twenty per cent of randomly chosen samples were re-measured by an observer who did not partake in assessing the samples the first time. Logistic regression was used to derivate two mathematical formulas which would calculate the probability of a skull being male. Results: The studied group comprised 1,200 head CT’s (627 female; 52.3%). The mean age of the group was 43.5 ± 17.4 years — no age difference between sexes was noted (p = 0.37). All of the performed measurements were significantly (p < 0.0001) larger in males than in females. The mathematical formula based on the “orale-spina nasalis posterior” (O-SNP) distance alone had a reliability rate of 68.35%. The equation based on the depth of the right greater palatine canal (GPC), the O-SNP distance and the anterior width of the palatal arch (AWPA) had a reliability rate of 78.37%. Conclusions: The most prominent sexually dimorphic parameters were the O-SNP, the GPC depth and the AWPA. The mathematical models presented in the current study can be used to successfully distinguish between sexes during forensic examination. (Folia Morphol 2014; 73, 4: 462–468)
