In an era of multiplatform journalism and the extraordinary ease of presenting views online, democracies face a key challenge, namely convincing citizens of the rightness of the solutions put forward. The concepts of “deliberative communication” offer a seemingly simple solution to the search for social consensus. However, citizens are much more exposed than in the past to disinformation, misdirection and purposeful manipulation. This study examines the quality of public debate in the adoption of major health legislation in the Slovak Republic. The aim is to highlight the different attitudes of the participants to the debate and the different motivations of the participants in the broad public debate. The study presents an analysis of the outputs of professional organisations and political representatives at national and regional level. It highlights the biased coverage of local media and the level of debate involving an exceptionally large range of speakers.

The study deals with the issue of news values and their application in two typologically different print groups, in serious and tabloid newspapers. We assume that different print categories work with different values because they access the reader differently. On the other hand, economic problems, especially a loss of readers and the subsequent loss of advertisers, also lead serious newspapers to follow topics and process them in a way that is closer to the segment of tabloid journalism. The differences between typologically different groups of the press are wiping out, which, in particular, is considered a shortcoming in the case of serious titles. Through content analysis results, the authors explore news values and themes of the daily Plus Jeden Deň and the daily Denník N within a defined time period to find out what values the typologically different newspaper prefer, and therefore what topics they offer to readers.

The paper addresses the issue of explanatory journalism, which is becoming an increasingly popular and important form of communication in times flooded by verified information as well as misinformation and hoaxes. The study is of a theoretical character and critically evaluates knowledge from this area, placing emphasis on digitalization of journalism that has brought new communication instruments and platforms, thus increasing demands on information literacy and media education of a recipient. This phenomenon resulted in the establishment of several media projects aimed mainly at explaining complex terms or phenomena in a simple and comprehensive way or at interconnecting high-ranking state officials with influential businessmen. In the text, the authors address the role and status of explanatory journalism, its potential in relation to investigative journalism and data journalism - areas and topics that are urgent and beneficial for our society but are often difficult to comprehend for a reader due to their technicality and complexity.

The study deals with the legal regulation of publications in the Slovak Republic, noting the position of publishers and web portal operators in the context of the new law ‘on publications’. This law specified publishers and operators as participants in the media market, defined community media, and established modern regulatory elements, including self-regulation, which have brought significant transparency to the ownership and financing of print and web media. In this study, we note the historical outline of the development of the press after 1989, the stabilisation of the situation within the legislative regulation of the press in 2008, while our primary objective is to define the current legal standards of the newly adopted Publications Act. We also reflect on the possible risks and problems that the new law entails, but our main aim is to present the fundamental and innovative changes that have resulted from several years of legislative process in the field of media law.
