Zasady budowy hasła słownikowego dla kolokacji werbo-nominalnych
EN
This article is a contribution to the research on noun predication in Polish. More specifically, it focusses on the role of the support verb (Vsup) in verb-noun constructions. In this type of structure, also called verb-noun collocation, or conventionalized syntagma, the verb is collocated with an abstract noun. In this paper, Grażyna Vetulani discusses some crucial aspects of the role of the Vsup in Polish. Despite its apparently subordinated non-predicative role, the Vsup brings important semantical and grammatical information to the meaning of the whole syntagma. In particular, Vetulani argues that, it is a unifying element for the class of predicative nouns (Npréd); it indicates the register and aspect of the compound; it determines its class in the set of predicative nouns; it restricts the polysemy of the predicative noun.

The paper focuses on the category of verb and more specifically on support verbs which form compound predicates with abstract nouns. We discuss various functions of verbs within the language system and the role of the support verb in compound predicative expressions. We observe numerous cases where different verbs may co-occur with one and the same abstract noun. The substitution of one support verb for another partially or totally changes the meaning of the whole compound predicative expression. Analysis of such cases may be useful for studying different meanings of nouns.

The main issue addressed in this paper is how to represent complex lexical structures in dictionaries. We focus on verb-noun type collocations. We argue in favour of the concept of lexicon-grammars as a useful, general framework to show how lexical units, simple or compound, behave within the language system. We postulate development of lexicons grouping similar collocations in families according to a central meaning (common for each such family). Lexicons of that kind are precious not only as basic tools for human translators, but also as an essential part of all kinds of software contributing to the development of Human Language Technologies.

Intensive works by (first) computer scientists and (then) linguists in order to obtain Automatic Translation Systems started already in the late 40-ties. Since that time many things have changed in the field of tools and methodologies like for example creation of basic electronic resources as corpora and dictionaries or the lexicon-grammar framework. This paper presents some language engineering tools recently developed (with participation of the Author) for Polish and claims their interest for the Translation Community.

This paper reports on our work related to nominal predication in Polish and exploring electronic corpora with help of text processing tools. Various aspects and challenges related with the applied methodology are presented. Despite encountered problems, nowadays, it is practically impossible to imagine solutions ignoring advantages of corpus linguistics. In fact this methodology appeared very efficient. In a relatively short time we developed an application-oriented dictionary of Polish predicative nouns and now we continue to extend it within the same paradigm.

In view of the needs related to automatic language processing, we emphasize the necessity of applying formal methods in linguistics in general, and particularly in creation of dictionary entries. We present some of our research achievements pertaining to the creation of a dictionary of Polish predicative nouns. As the dictionary is intended to be computer consulted, its entries take into account polysemy and contain information about the syntactic relations between elements of an elementary sentence. The dictionary is a kind of the lexicon grammar.

In this paper, we present the problems encountered during our research in the field of nominal predication in Polish, in particular concerning nouns referring to properties and character traits. In a previous work on predicates referring to various activities and behaviors, carried out with the use of electronic corpora (the National Corpus of Polish Language, as well as electronic sources available on the Internet), we obtained a dictionary of verb-noun collocations with high lexical coverage comparing to traditional dictionaries (not based on electronic corpus research). Using the same corpus data and methodology as before, we conducted a study of the class of predicative nouns referring to properties and character traits. However, the results obtained following the application of this method proved to be unsatisfactory. In this article, we consider the reasons for this in order to optimize research methods later in our work.

In this paper we present a contribution to the transformation of PolNet, a Polish wordnet developed at the Adam Mickiewicz University in Pozna, into a Lexicon Grammar of Polish. The current step consists in including verb-noun collocations and relations linking the verbal synsets to noun synsets. We focus on the concept of synonymy for two kinds of predicative entities: verbs and verb-noun collocations and on synset granularity problems that emerged at this stage of the project. This work was sponsored by the Polish National Program for Humanities (grant 0022/FNiTP/H11/80/2011).

In this article, we present research directly inspired by the Princeton WordNet lexical ontology project (Miller, Fellbaum), which was a response to the real need for ontologies corresponding to the natural conceptualization common to all language users, within a given natural language, or within a specific sublanguage. Lexical ontologies for a given language or language subsystem determined by the scope of communication needs turn out to be useful and even necessary for constructing formal models of linguistic competence and, consequently, for designing and implementing AI systems with linguistic communicative competence, both passive and active. An important milestone of the research program presented in this work is the acquisition of tools in the form of extensive lexical ontologies of a new type, referred to in this work as Lexicon-Grammar Verbnets. In the article, we refer to the works of authors such as: Alain Colmerauer, Charles Fillmore, Christiane Fellbaum, Gaston Gross, Maurice Gross, Thomas R. Gruber, Richard Kittredge, George A. Miller, Martha Palmer, Kazimierz Polański, and Piek Vossen.
