Production rationality in a crucial way is influenced by technological factors and material efficiency characteristic for them. Processing wood into solid goods and prefabricates is mainly related to the dimensional and qualitative structure of roundwood. Of significant importance is also the impact of a wide range of obtained products which on one hand allows for a better usage of the material but on the other increases the volume of by-products and the number of extra processing operations. In traditional technological processes which prevail in small plants, an important asset is a wide variety of products which meet the requirements of local markets. The article provides the analysis of factors influencing material efficiency of softwood processing, verifies research hypothesis that theoretical efficiency indicators are higher than actual figures and determines the reasons for the demonstrated deviations.

The work presents the results of character research and the share of by-products generated at the stage of processing the raw material timber in sawmill plants. For identification purposes individual forms of by-products and their participation in sawmill processes is important to separate the basic ones technological features that shape them. Type and quantity of by-products are primarily dependent on the type being processed raw material and production volume determining the technologies used processing. The research was carried out by means of a diagnostic survey, in selected ones wood industry plants processing round hart wood and softwood. Medium and small wood plants were included the most numerous group of sawmill enterprises. An analysis was made indicative and comparative. Depending on the species layout, it was established share of piece products degree of disintegration (chips, sawdust, wood dust, etc.). Factors that influence the quantity have been determined generated by-products for use own and for sale to wood biomass customers.

In recent years there has been limited distribution and supply of wood. In consequence, there are attempts to optimise its rational use. The noticeable deficit and commonness of this raw material cause the search for different sources from which it could be acquired. Therefore, there is search for new applications of lower quality wood, which meets clients’ expectations due to its availability and lower prices. The article analyses the possibilities and justifies the use of lower quality material for different mechanical purposes with simultaneous maintenance of appropriate quality of products.

Prefabrication for production purposes of skeleton furniture. In the described experiments, quantitative efficiency obtained during the manufacture of furniture semi-finished products from the selected type of beech sawn timber was adopted as the basic optimisation criterion. Using the internal factory material data together with material prices for beech sawn timber for individual quality classes and the semi-finished products obtained for further processing in 2007, efficiency indices of their production were determined taking into consideration the quality classes of sawn timber materials.

Prefabrykacja dla potrzeb produkcji mebli szkieletowych. W badaniach za podstawowe kryterium optymalizacji w przerobie wybranego rodzaju tarcicy bukowej przyjęto wydajność pozyskania półfabrykatów bukowych do produkcji mebli szkieletowych. Surowcem do badań właściwości technologicznych półfabrykatów meblowych była tarcica bukowa. W oparciu wykazy materiałowe w powiązaniu z cenami materiałowymi tarcicy bukowej poszczególnych klas jakości i pozyskiwanych do dalszego przerobu półfabrykatów za 2007 rok, ustalono wskaźniki wydajności ich produkcji przy uwzględnieniu klasy jakości materiałów tartych.

The results of deteriorating economic situation in Europe are visible in numerous fields of economy also in Poland. Wooden sector is also among those undergoing a difficult phase. It is the result of its specific production process as well as its Total dependence from the main supplier that is National Forests. Hence seeking solutions which will enable the producers to function properly in this period of an economic slump becomes a necessity. The aim of the article is to highlight the broad potential of engineered wood, which in the situation of increase of wood prices and the shortage of this material on the market becomes an interesting, often cheaper alternative for wooden construction. Additionally, its aim is to present the parameters of solid and engineered wood in a context of wooden construction, as well as point at the innovative solutions which facilitate meeting European Union contemporary standards in home building.

Wood as a raw material is becoming scarce which makes it necessary to take action to improve economy and efficiency of wood processing. One of the major species of deciduous beech is a wide range of industrial applications. Taking into account the characteristics and qualities of raw beech decided to carry out research to identify indicators to optimize processing of the material in real conditions. Analysis of the processing timber beech into semi-finished elements of the furniture for the implementation of simple, curvilinear elements of the furniture may give base to the rationalization of technology in industrial applications.

In special trade of the valuable wood raw material, in addition to system sales, the submission form is preferred. Increasing demand for high quality wood leads to an increase in market prices. Oak is that species that is devoted for the sale in the group of valuable wood in Poland. Oak timber have a number of features limiting their industrial significance. Its suitability is affected by quality and technical properties. The price level, which is a measure of the economic usefulness of wood, is affected by the share of defects and offered dimensions. The paper reviews the impact of not only the quality factor, but also indicates the correlation between the dimensional parameters of oak wood offered and the average sales prices of special raw material in the submission sales in the Regional Directorate of State Forests in Katowice. Attention was drawn to the influence of both the diameter of wood directed to trade at a constant log length. The paper presents the variability of oak wood prices, where a characteristic factor translating into an increase in the value of the raw material is undoubtedly the diameter of the logs of the valuable raw material.
