Changes in the contemporary world affect the evolution of the foreign language teacher profession, its role and the required competences. In addition to his/her traditional teaching activity, the foreign language teacher must often undertake pre-learning tasks such as designing the curriculum, developing teaching techniques and didactic materials. This is illustrated particularly well with the example of a specialist language teacher. Hence, it is necessary to modify and/or redefine the curricula of language teacher training (including LSP teachers). The aim of the present paper is to reflect on the current role of an LSP teacher and his/her competencies required in the needs analysis process for developing a language training program for professional purposes. Starting from the needs analysis, we will consider the tasks specific for the activity of an LSP teacher and the sources of information which he/she should explore in order to design the curriculum content. We base the present reflection on our professional experience in training French language teachers in Poland.

All Romance language institutes feature teaching specialisations in order to provide students with foreign language teaching qualifications. The curriculum for these specialisations is subject to ministerial regulations, and as such is quite rigidly transposed onto university programmes. Are the ministerial guidelines adequate for the target profile and competences of the specialist language teacher? How do higher education institutions comply with regulations regarding training foreign language teachers? The aim of the presented article is, on the one hand, to review available teaching specialisation content at selected Romance institutes in Poland in terms of vocational language teaching, and on the other hand to assess the relevance of the programmes for desirable competences of a specialist language teacher.

Long before offi cial theories of teaching appeared, people needed to know foreign languages for effi cient execution of their work. In time, in the face of changing socioeconomic conditions, a formal scheme of language learning became necessary. Although it varies with regard to learning natural languages, the presented article aims to trace the evolution of job-related language teaching related to teaching French. The variety of teaching goals, emphasis on selected competences, the regard for the recipient of teaching, as well as the sheer number of teaching conceptions all prove that French teaching methodologists are very active in terms of didactics. The presented review of methods of specialized French teaching covers the period spanning from the 1950s to the modern day (2008). Each conception is discussed in a separate section, and the highlights of all the presented conceptions are summarized in a table at the end.

Training teachers of languages for specific purposes is not an easy task, given the complexity of the process, distinctiveness of LSP vs. general language instruction, scarce time available in modern philology curricula and lack of provisions for practicum. However, with increasing popularity of LSP not only in the corporate sector with adults, but also at secondary level in vocational education, the demand for well-trained LSP teachers is going to soar. The present paper shows the specific nature of LSP teacher training and the important place that is occupied in the process by task-based methodology leading to teacher autonomy. The two cases of LSP teacher training implemented at Romance philology of Catholic University of Lublin and Applied Linguistics of Maria Curie-Skłodowska University in Lublin exemplify how to develop teacher autonomy through integration of in-class instruction and fieldwork.
