The article is devoted to the problem of collective memory. Nowadays, in the collective memory of the population of Ukraine persistently there is a flashback about the Soviet past which is constantly present in mentality, in political discourse in ordinary consciousness, in comparisons. Such comparisons pathologically distort the perception of contemporaneity. The author also analyses problem of abuse of memory in detail: situation of collective memory with regard to golodomor, Stalin repressions and other terrible pages of the past. The special attention is given to a correlation of collective memory and identity. But as an object of identity of the Ukrainian population is washed out, the state of collective memory cannot be satisfactorily acknowledged. A durable, consolidated identity cannot be a description of the modern Ukrainian population.
