Persons interested in the protection of monuments of Eastern rite church art in Poland initiated in June 1982 the establishment of a Group for the Protection of Eastern Rite Church Art, part of the Board of the Warsaw Branch of the Society of Care for Historical Monuments. In June 1993 it became one of the national committees of the Main Board of the Society, now known as the Social Commission for the Protection of Art Monuments of the Eastern Rite Church. The Commission commenced its work by determining the prevalent state of monuments, and by intervening in various cases of state and church institutions and private users. Attempts were made to interest social organizations and the press in the condition of the relics. The undertakings pursued by the Commission contributed to the involvement of the Main Conservation Commission in the protection of monuments of Eastern rite church art in Poland; a discussion was held on this topic during a session organized in January 1987. Already in 1983 the Commission embarked upon preparing detailed documentation (inventories, expert opinions) and, subsequently, technical plans for conservation and renovation in the course of preparations for renovation work. The first conservation dates from 1984 and involved monuments of Łemko folk stonecutting in the cemeteries and roadsides of the Beskid Niski region. In 1986 this work was expanded so as to include Roztocze (stone crosses from the center in Stare Brusno), and in the following years — the Bieszczady mountains. Conservation of Eastern rite cemeteries in Warsaw and Chetmno became the next traget. Alltold, from 1984 to 1992 about 1959 stone crosses as well as tombstones and roadside statues were conserved. A number of valuable monuments was discovered in the course of this work (i.a. dated stone crosses from the first half of the eighteenth century). The year 1986 marks the beginning of the conservation of church polychromies and the renovation of church buildings such as the church in Blechnarka and the presbytery in Świątkowa Wielka; work was commenced in the churches in Hahczowa and Szczebrzeszyn. Four wooden bell towers in Michniowiec, Kornie, Siedliska and Teniatyska were restored, churches in Rudka and Bystre and a chapel in Łowcza were secured and renovation was started in Mycow, Łukawiec, Łopienka, Kruhel Wielki and Korczmin. Finally, work in the churches in Mycow, Łukawiec and Łopienka is nearing completion. From 1985 the Commission has been collecting architectonic wooden details from ruined or renovated buildings, including the church in Wierzbica which collapsed in 1992. In 1990 archeological surveys were performed upon the initiative of the Commission in the environs of the churches in Łukawiec and Chotyniec, and in 1992 archeological excavations were renewed in the church in Szczebrzeszyn. A specific form of the activity pursued by the Commission, on the borderline of conservation and popularization, are summer camps for young people, who under the supervision of experienced conservators, put old cemeteries into order and carry out simple conservation on historical crosses as well as tombstones and roadside statues. Such camps were held in the Bieszczady, Beskid Niski and Roztocze regions. From the very beginning of its existence, the Commission has attached particular importance to popularization. Already in 1983 it announced an art competition entitled „Old Eastern Rite Church Art in Children's Drawings" (from 1989 also in the drawings of young people). The competition offers summertine plein air sessions for select participants during which they have an opportunity to become directly acquainted with old Eastern rite church art. Up to now, about 400 persons attended the sessions. Works from the competitions and sessions were displayed at numerous exhibitions. From 1984 on, the Commission prepares and presents photography exhibits featuring Eastern rite art in Poland and the problems of its protection. From 1990 conservation camps and plein air sessions are organized together with the Ukrainian Society for the Protection of Historical and Cultural Monuments. The most recent form of popularization are concerts of church music, which started in 1990. It would have been impossible to realize the plans proposed by the Commission without suitable funds. The prime source of subsidies is the Ministry of Culture and Art and the General Conservator of Historical Monuments; the Commission is also assisted by Voivodeship Conservators of Historical Monuments in Nowy Sącz and Warsaw, the Foundation for the Protection of Historical Monuments, the Polish Lottery, the Stefan Batory Foundation, the Council of Ministers, the Ministry of National Education, the Jacek Kuroń SOS Foundation, the Foundation for Support for the Development of Eastern Rite Culture and by individual donors. The intention of the Commission was, and is, to salvage beauty since, as Dostoevsky wrote, beauty is the only force which can save the world.
