The purpose of the paper is to present the results of the stochastic modelling with uncertainty performed with the use of Monte Carlo (MC) simulation with 10,000 cycles and a confidence interval of 95 %, as recommended. Analysed REEs were fitted by lognormal distributions by using the Crystal Ball® (CB) spreadsheet-based software after defining the geometric mean value (μg) and the standard deviation (σg), automatically calculated (matches) the lower, as well as, upper boundaries of lognormal distribution. The number of replications of a simulation affects the quality of the results. The principal output report provided by CB and presented in this study consists of the graphical representation in the form of the frequency chart, percentiles summary, and statistics summary. Additional CB options provide a sensitivity analysis with tornado diagrams. The data that was used for MC simulation of the LCI model includes available and published data concerning associated with the REEs. This paper discusses the results and show that the adopted approach is applicable for any REEs used in the LCI studies under uncertainty. The results obtained from this study can be used as the first step in performing a full LCA analysis and help practitioners as well as decision-makers in the environmental engineering and management.

Polymer inclusion membrane (PIM) containing cellulose triacetate (CTA) as a polymer matrix and 2-nitrophenyl octyl ether (NPOE) as a plasticizer was developed. This membrane also contained di(2-ethylhexyl)phosphoric acid (D2EHPA) and tributyl phosphate (TBP) as the carriers of metal ions. The facilitated transport of lanthanum(III) from aqueous nitrate(V) solutions across PIM was studied. It was observed that metal ions were transported from the source phase into 2M H2SO4 as the receiving phase. The transport through PIM with D2EHPA as the ion carrier was found as the more effective method of lanthanum(III) removal from the aqueous solution than transport through PIM with TBP as the ion carrier.

The activity concentrations of 226Ra and 228Ac in weathered Japanese soils from two selected prefectures have been measured using a γ-ray spectroscopy system with high purity germanium detector. The uranium, thorium, and rare earth elements (REEs) concentrations were determined from the same soil samples using inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS). For example, granitic rocks contain higher amounts of U, Th, and light REEs compared to other igneous rocks such as basalt and andesites. Therefore, it is necessary to understand the interaction between REEs and nature of soils since soils are complex heterogeneous mixture of organic and inorganic solids, water, and gases. In this paper, we will discuss about distribution pattern of 238U and 232Th along with REEs in soil samples of weathered acid rock (granite) collected from two prefectures of Japan: Hiroshima and Miyagi.
