The article provides an analysis of the biofuel production and consumption development in Latvia. The biofuel production developed due to the state subsidies which were paid for the produced amount till the year 2010. The present capacities can ensure fulfilment of the norms set by the EU Directive for the consumption of biofuel; there is a competitive production unit with a modern technology and a great production output. However, in the field of consumption, the state considerably lags behind the norms mentioned. Therefore measures should be continued to promote biofuel consumption.

Considerable financial means have been invested during the last decade in modernization of agricultural machinery, including purchase of new tractors. As the corresponding EU directive sets gradual, by periods, reduction of the pollutants in the air for the new tractors and the number of such tractors with the specific fuel consumption are known, a methodological approach was offered in 2011 for the estimation of the variations in the amount of polluting emissions in the air created by the new tractors in a longer period of time [1]. However, in order to evaluate the impact of modernisation of the entire fleet of tractors upon the pollution variations in a longer period of time, for instance, by comparing the year 1996 or 2000, and 2010, one should know the characteristics of the pollution caused by the tractors produced in the former Commonwealth of Independent Countries (further - the CIS countries) which performed most of the farming operations at the beginning of the period mentioned. As parametrs for the estimation of the summary pollution in tons per year during the selected years were set the ratio of fuel consumption between the "new" and the "old" tractors, as well as distribution of the fuel consumption between agriculture and forestry because it is indicated in statistical reports as a common parameter. Distribution of fuel consumption was estimated also between tractors produced in the EU and the CIS countries. After the motivation of these assumptions an estimate was made of the summary air pollution emitted by the fleet of tractors in the years 1996, 2000 and 2010. The obtained results were evaluated in a brief discussion and a direction was outlined for further investigations.

The article deals with the problems of the provision of farms with the machinery and its use depending on the sizes of the farms, comparing the years 2001 and 2007. The analysis of the farms was made by several parameters - by their number, their technical readiness, and the capacity sufficiency in order to perform field operations in time and high quality. Data are provided about the acquisition of tractors by years, their technical condition, the specific energy supply and the total capacity of the tractor fleet of the farms having different production intensities. The results of the research confirm that the production concentration will continue on larger farms, the application of special technologies will increase, the specific energy supply of the farms will decrease, the capacity of the tractor and combine engines will grow, and the total number of tractors, grain harvesters and other agricultural machinery will decrease.

The article deals with the statistical indices which characterise the renewal rates of the tractor fleet in Latvia, changes in its structure, the quantity of tractors, and their energy intensity. Factors are shown that characterise different rates of the growth of the tractor fleet, the purchasing dynamics of new tractors which have the greatest specific weight among the purchased ones. There are perspectives of further formation of the fleet of tractors by reducing the quantity of tractors and increasing the number of energy intensive machines on the farms.

The report presents a review of the cranberry growing ecological technologies applied in Latvia depending on the amount of production and its provision with adequate means of mechanisation. The costs are analysed for laying out plantations, the production of the products and the technical means for harvesting, as well as their payback at various volumes of output.

On the basis of sprayer examination methods specified in European countries the approved examination methods have beer, worked out that will be recommended for use for periodical examinations of field sprayers in Latvia. It is recommended te determine the accuracy of the following parameters during the periodical examinations of field sprayers in Latvia - nozzles cross distribution, pump pulsation, pump flow volume, controls manometer, as well as the numerical values of controls pressure obtained by measurements. It is recommended to determine visually the other parameters of the units of field sprayers such as- drive, pump, tank, pipe system, spray boom and nozzles.

The paper provides data on the development of biological farms in Latvia, and characteristics of the factors which enhance and hamper this process. An increase in the number of these farms is prognosticated due to the EU financing. The tasks of agricultural engineering are characterised in this field, as well as several developments at the Ulbroka Research Centre.
