The β phase (Al12Mg17) precipitated by heat treatment in some alloy compositions may result deterioration of corrosion resistance. However, much of its role remains unclear. The effect of the β phase on the corrosion resistance behavior in a NaCl solution was presented in this study. The specimen was Mg-9mass%Al (AM90) alloy and the content of the β phase precipitant was controlled systematically by aging time at 473 K. Area rate of β and lamellar phase in the specimens were 0, 10 and 100%, respectively. According to the results of cathodic polarization curves measurement, the corrosion current density of α phase was 0.215 A/m2 and β phase of it was 0.096 A/m2. While, the specimen includes 10% of β and lamellar phase showed large corrosion current density of 0.251 A/m2. Positive correlation between the β phase and the open circuit potential, suggest that the β phase acts as a cathodic electrode. Moreover, the microstructure after postentiostatic corrosion tests was also support the role of β phase.

The microstructure of Al-Si alloy has coarse silicon and this structure is known dangerous for mechanical properties due to its crack effect. Sr addition is preferred to modify the coarse silica during solidification. Additionally, bifilms (oxide structure) are known as a more dangerous defect which is frequently seen in light alloys. It is aimed at that negative effect of bifilms on the properties of the alloys tried to be removed by the degassing process and to regulate the microstructure of the alloy. In this study, the effect of degassing and Sr modification on the mechanical properties of AlSi12Fe alloy was investigated, extensively. Four different parameters (as-received, as-received + degassing, Sr addition, Sr addition + degassing) were studied under the same conditions environmentally. The microstructural analyses and mechanical tests were done on cast parts. All data obtained from the experimental study were analyzed statistically by using statistical analysis software. It was concluded from the results that Sr addition is very dangerous for AlSi12Fe alloy. It can be suggested that to reach high mechanical properties and low casting defects, the degassing process must be applied to all castings whereas Sr addition should not be preferred.

The effect of the β phase (Al12Mg17) on the corrosion resistance in a NaCl solution was investigated by electro chemical methods.Volume fraction of β phase in each specimen was controlled systematically by isothermal annealing at 473 K as 0%, 4%, 22% and 100 %, respectively. Although α phase shows lower corrosion current density than that of β phase, the α/β mixed phase specimen showed higher corrosion current density than that of α phase.It strongly suggests that β phase act as cathodic electrode in the alloys.

Celem pracy było opracowanie metodyki badań metalograficznych i chemicznych powierzchni warstw wierzchnich po procesie polerowania i obróbki anodowej stopów lekkich. W ramach pracy opracowano metodyki badań warstw wierzchnich za pomocą skaningowego mikroskopu elektronowego Inspect F wyposażony w EDS i EBSD, metodykę pomiaru mikrotwardości warstwy wierzchniej na przekroju poprzecznym. Opracowano także metodykę analizy profilowej stopów tytanu, magnezu i glinu z wykorzystaniem metody optycznej spektrometrii emisyjnej ze wzbudzeniem jarzeniowym (GD OES). W ramach pracy zweryfikowano opracowane metodyki dla warstw wierzchnich naniesionych na stopie magnezu pozyskanych z Politechniki Śląskiej w ramach realizacji Projektu Zamawianego.

The purpose of the work was to develop the methodology for metallographic and chemical investigations of surface layers after polishing and anodic treatment of light alloys. As a part of the work the methodologies for investigations of surface layers using Inspect F scanning electron microscope equipped with EDS and EBSD and methodology for measuring micro-hardness of surface layer at cross-section were developed. Methodology for profile analysis of titanium, magnesium and aluminium alloys using the glow discharge optical emission spectroscopy method (GD OES) were also developed. During the work, the methodologies developed for surface layers applied to magnesium alloy acquired from the Silesian University of Technology as a part of carrying out the Ordered Project were verified.

Materiały konstrukcyjne, stosowane w wytwarzaniu pojazdów, zastępowane są stopami metali lekkich lub kompozytami opartymi na bazie tych metali. Obserwuje się wzrost zainteresowania zwłaszcza stopami aluminium i magnezu. Stosowanie tych materiałów przynosi następujące korzyści: zmniejszenie masy pojazdu, zmniejszenie zużycia paliwa, wzrost osiągów technicznych, poprawę komfortu jazdy. Z upowszechnianiem stosowania nowych materiałów wiąże się potrzeba podejmowania badań zmierzających do doskonalenia takich cech, jak: odporność na zużycie, zmęczenie i korozję.

Constructional materials which are nsed in the vehicles production are now being replaced by light metal alloys or by composites made on the base of these metals. One can observe an increase of interest, especially in alloys with aluminium and magnesium. Usage of such materials yields the following benefits: reducing the vehicle 's mass and fuel consumption as well as improvement of technical performance and travelling comfort. However the broad dissemination of the usage of those new materials still requires to take up more investigations for improving of their wear resistance, fatigue strength and corrosion resistance.
