Rynek i produkcja żywności w ostatnich dwóch latach kształtowane były przez wysoką podaż, niewielki wzrost popytu oraz przez relatywne tanienie produktów rolno-spożywczych. Zjawisko to szczególnie ostro wystąpiło na rynku zbóż i mięsa. Stan ten zmienia się w 2000 roku, gdyż z powodu zmniejszenia podaży produktów rolnictwa zmalała jej nadwyżka nad popytem, a w niektórych segmentach występuje nawet niedobór podaży. Rok bieżący i następny będą okresem wyższego od stopy inflacji wzrostu cen produktów rolnych, a w mniejszym stopniu także cen żywności. Jest to czynnik obniżający przyrosty popytu krajowego i ograniczający możliwości eksportu. Tworzy to silne ograniczenia rynkowe dla przemysłu spożywczego.

The food market and food production for the last two years have been shaped by high supply and a slight increase in demand caused by a decline in relative prices of agri-food products in real terms. This phenomenon particularly affected the markets of grain and meat. Due to decline in supply the market surplus of agricultural products shrunk. Moreover in some segments of the market shortages were observed. Thanks to that fact, the situation in the year 2000 has changed. Increase in the prices of agricultural products in the current and the forthcoming years will exceed the inflation rate and in smaller extent overall index of food prices. This factor hampers increase in domestic demand and restricts the possibilities of exports. Finally such situa-tion creates severe market restrictions for food industry.
