New peptides with potential antimicrobial activity, encrypted in protein sequences of meat industry by-products were searched with bioinformatics tools using BIOPEP-UWM database. The potential of major proteins as a source of biologically active peptides with antibacterial, antiviral and antifungal activity were considered. As a result, collagen, hemoglobin, fibrinogen and selected meat tissue proteins (creatine kinase, myosin, titin) has been shown to contain short motifs responsible for antibacterial properties. The peptides with antiviral and antifungal properties were not detected.

Artykuł omawia metody badań toksykologicznych in silico. Opisane zostały w nim modele badań oparte na zasadzie zależności struktura-aktywność (SAR) oraz inne przykłady wykorzystania modelowania matematycznego do oceny toksyczności substancji chemicznych.

The following article gives examples of in silico methods used in modern toxicology. Described are models based on structure-activity relationships (SARs) and other uses of mathematical modeling used for assessing the toxicity of the compound.

Selected genes were analyzed in silico in three species: red fox (Vulpes vulpes), raccoon dog (Nyctereutes procyonoides), and dog (Canis lupus familiaris). This type of analysis exemplifies current and potential research on gene expression. Four nucleotide sequences, of the genes IGF1, MYO15A, PAX3 and MC1R, were obtained from the NCBI online database. The analyses focused on the presence of CpG islands and two analytical techniques, BSP and MSP. The results from three computer programs, CpG Island Searcher®, BiSearch® and MethPrimer®, were discussed in detail. The applications were compared in terms of their functionality and usefulness.
