Modeling and simulation of an ideal plug flow reactor for synthesis of ethyl oleate using homogeneous acid catalyst

The production of ethyl oleate, by homogenous acid esterification of oleic acid with ethanol, have discussed experimentally and via computational simulation in a plug flow reactor. An innovative simulation model has developed to predict the esterification reaction performance in an ideal plug flow reactor. The amount of H2SO4 acid catalyst, the initial molar ratio of alcohol to oleic acid, ethanol concentration, reaction temperature, and esterification time have examined their effects on ethyl oleate production and the conversion of oleic acid. Then the simulation extended to examine the esterification reaction kinetics and determine the reaction rate coefficients. The simulation results demonstrate that the increasing of H2SO4 acid, initial molar ratio of ethanol to oleic acid, ethanol concentration, and reaction temperature improved the productivity of the ethyl oleate and reduced the reactor space-time. The kinetics results illustrated that the reaction sensitivity to the temperature unchanging by using higher ethanol concentration and alcohol to oleic acid initial ratio. Lastly, the experimental yields at different conditions were slightly higher from those simulating with average values of 93.62 and 92.29%, respectively, indicating that the phenomenon of back-mixing cannot be ignored in esterification reactors, especially with a relatively high retention time within the reactor.

Koncepcja zero zwrotów oparta jest na założeniu, że producent w żadnych okolicznościach nie akceptuje zwrotów. Pełna odpowiedzialność za produkty zostaje scedowana na dalszego (niebędącego dystrybutorem) pośrednika w kanale dystrybucji. Doświadczenia przedsiębiorstw pokazują, że zero-returns policy nie jest rozwiązaniem przynoszącym firmom oczekiwane rezultaty. Ograniczenia, jakie niesie ze sobą to podejście zmusza do poszukiwania alternatywnych rozwiązań. Jedno z nich autor proponuje określić mianem wieczystej restytucji. Przedstawia je w artykule oraz podkreśla korzyści płynące z jego stosowania.

Zero-returns concept is based on assumption that manufacturer never and under no conditions takes care of the turnabouts. Full responsibility for the goods is transferred to the further (non-distributor) dealer from the distribution channel. Experience from the companies’ practice shows that zero-returns policy doesn’t bring the expected results. Limitations posed by this approach forces to look for alternative solutions. One of them, the author proposes to call: perpetual restitution. Presents it in the article and notes advantages coming from its implementation.

Skuteczne rozwiązywanie rosnących problemów środowiska przyrodniczego uwarunkowane jest w znacznym stopniu zmianą w zachowaniach podstawowych podmiotów gospodarczych, czyli producentów i konsumentów. Zachowania konsumentów mają równie ważne znaczenie dla rozwiązywania współczesnych problemów środowiska, jak zachowania producentów. Problem ten jest mocniej akcentowany dopiero od lat dziewięćdziesiątych, od przyjęcia na Światowej Konferencji ONZ poświęconej problemom środowiska Deklaracji z Rio. Uznaje się w niej, że podstawowym paradygmatem globalnej polityki ekologicznej jest koncepcja rozwoju zrównoważonego, której integralnym elementem jest zarówno zrównoważona produkcja, jak i konsumpcja. Zdaniem autora, z całą pewnością można mówić o istnieniu w konsumpcji krajów wysoko rozwiniętych nowego i nieodwracalnego ekologicznego trendu.

The basic paradigm of global policy is the concept of sustained development one of whose elements is balanced consumption. This leads to the increase in the importance of consumption and the consumer in solving current problems of natural environment. The process of pro-ecological changes in consumers' behaviours depends on many factors of both economic and social character. The increase of consumers' ecological awareness, improvement of their financial situation and improved supply of ecological products all play a key role. Ecological transformations in the area of consumption are accompanied by appropriate changes in the sphere of product manufacture and distribution because the scale of modern problems occurring in the natural environment imposes adjustment actions in all areas of economy. This means that changes in the model of consumption barely form an element of a wider phenomenon which involves the entire economy. Changes in the model of consumption resulting from the concern for the environment are not universal but occur only in a certain group of customers. The distinctive features of this group of consumers include: relatively high income, high level of education and medium age. This group constitutes a small percentage of the total group of consumers with a tendency for a steady increase.
