Estimating the fractal dimensionof irregularly shaped aggregates

For describing the morphology of irregular shaped particles and aggregates it is common since several years to use the fractal dimension. This paper deals with two methods of estimating the fractal dimension. On the one hand, the so called "box-counting" algorithm, that is implemented in a large number of commercially available programmes and on the other hand, so called power-law relationships for "manually" calculating the fractal dimension. Some exemplary applications of calculating the fractal dimensions are shown, especially the examination of changes in floc-structure by ultrasonification. Some exemplary programmes are mentioned as well.

Wymiar fraktalny używany jest od wielu lat do określenia morfologii cząstek oraz agregatów o kształcie nieregularnym. Artykuł dotyczy dwóch metod określania wymiaru fraktalnego. Z jednej strony algorytm "box-counting" stosowany jest w wielu programach komercyjnych, z drugiej dysponujemy zależnością potęgową, wykorzystywaną przy obliczeniach "manualnych". W niniejszym artykule przedstawiono przykładowe obliczenia wymiaru fraktalnego, szczególnie zmian struktury kłaczków w polu ultradźwiękowym. Omówiono również inne programy.
