Purpose: The paper's main objective is to indicate the current state of knowledge regarding the results of implementing the ISO 9004:2018 standard, with a particular focus on identifying the potential benefits and limitations of its implementation. The study is in line with the research stream on improving quality management systems and striving for sustainable market success. Design/methodology/approach: The paper is based on a narrative literature review through analysis of the publications available in scientific databases. It was then combined with the method of scientific reflection. Findings: The paper highlights the opportunities that the implementation of the ISO 9004:2018 standard and its integrated self-assessment model offer to organisations. The analysis also revealed limitations associated with the implementation of the standard's recommendations. Practical implications: The research contributes to the development of knowledge in the practical application of the standard and the self-assessment model. It can serve as a reference point for practitioners and scholars interested in the aforementioned subject matter. Originality/value: The originality of the paper lies in its comprehensive analysis of the requirements of the ISO 9004:2018 standard, addressing significant issues both for the academic environment and practitioners in the field of quality management. The study highlights the benefits of applying the self-assessment model, and outlines the challenges associated with its implementation.

International management standards can provide organizations with challenging opportunities only if they understand the intended aims and features of those standards and apply them creatively and integrated into their business management. For that to happen, the business leaders of the organizations play the key role. For this subject, this discursive article focuses on the ISO 9004 quality management (QM) standard, which is one of the international management standards, which can be applied to all kinds of organizations. In addition to the opportunities, this article discusses difficulties and pitfalls associated with the ISO 9004 standard, and their possible solutions in practical implementations. The authors highlight aspects of how ISO 9004 can be considered as the most challenging standard in the ISO 9000 series of the QM standards. However, many organizations, which have not acknowledged the differences and relationship of the ISO 9004 and ISO 9001 standards, often apply the ISO 9000 standards in inadequate ways and hence have not the ability to exploit the potential opportunities of the standards. Especially, ISO 9004 considers QM from the entire business point of view and aims at the quality of the whole organization. ISO 9004 standard can provide QM guidance to achieve sustained success even in complex, demanding and ever-changing contemporary business environments, including the challenges of the 4th industrial revolution. This article gives ideas and creative theoretical and practical views for the ISO 9004 implementations. The aim is to emphasize that, according to ISO 9004, the organization's identity and its differentiating competitive advantages are the bases for the quality of the organization and its sustained success. In this context, each organization has its own and always existing QM realization, which cannot be separated from business management and which can be continually improved according to the organization's business development strategies and practices. In this respect, the ISO 9004 can be seen as flexible and challenging. Based on the authors’ experience, QM targets can be achieved and developed in the most natural way through the principles and practices of the learning organization. In addition to the ISO 9000 standards, organizations also use other well-known managerial references, including performance excellence models and many various management system standards of the specific disciplines. All these may be seen as sub-domains within the ISO 9004 framework. ISO 9004 also can be used for diverse TQM and sustainability implementations. This article is based on the authors’ long experience in the practical promotion and application of the ISO 9000 standard in different kinds of organizations. The first author of the article has involved in the international drafting process of the ISO 9004 standard-editions since the 1980s. He also was a cowriter of a similar ISO 9004 article about twenty years ago. That article has been publicly available on the Internet, and its over one thousand recent readers evidence a growing interest in this standard. Moreover, after 2000, ISO 9004 standard has been revised twice and rewritten completely recently. Hence, it is well-founded to re-examine this subject again in this article.

Nadrzędnym celem każdej jednostki inspekcyjnej nadzorującej bezpieczeństwo żywności powinno być uzyskanie zaufania wszystkich stron zainteresowanych bezpieczeństwem żywności do bezstronności i wiarygodności wyników czynności inspekcyjnych przeprowadzanych przez jednostkę. Realizacji tego celu sprzyja wdrożenie systemu zarządzania zgodnego z wymaganiami normy ISO/IEC 17020:2012. Ponadto, w celu zwiększania swoich zdolności do spełniania wymagań stawianych przez różne strony zainteresowane, jednostki inspekcyjne mogą doskonalić skuteczność i efektywność wdrożonego systemu zarządzania, wykorzystując wytyczne normy ISO 9004:2009. Celem artykułu jest ocena, w jakim zakresie wytyczne normy ISO 9004:2009 mogą być wykorzystane przez jednostki inspekcyjne nadzorujące bezpieczeństwo żywności, posiadające system zarządzania zgodny z wymaganiami normy ISO/IEC 17020:2012, do projektowania procesów monitorowania i pomiarów realizowanych w systemie, w celu zwiększenia jego skuteczności i efektywności. W artykule przedstawiono wymagania normy ISO/IEC 17020:2012 oraz wytyczne normy ISO 9004:2009 dotyczące monitorowania i pomiarów, a także dokonano analizy możliwości wspólnego wykorzystania tych standardów do doskonalenia systemów zarządzania wdrożonych w jednostkach inspekcyjnych nadzorujących bezpieczeństwo żywności.

The most vital objective of any food safety inspection body should be gaining trust of all the parties interested in food safety, trust regarding objectivity, transparency and the credibility of procedures executed by the inspection body. The implementation of the management system based on the requirements of the ISO 9004:2009 standard makes the fulfillment of the objective more probable. Furthermore, in order to increase their abilities to meet the requirements of the interested parties, the inspection bodies can master the efficiency and effectiveness of the implemented systems using the prerogatives of the ISO 9004:2009 standard. The aim of the article presented below is the examination of the range in which the prerogatives of the ISO 9004:2009 standard might be used by the food safety inspection bodies for designing the processes of monitoring and measuring realized within the system in order to increase its’ efficiency and effectiveness. The article outlines the requirements of the ISO/IEC 17020:2012 as well as the prerogatives of 9004:2009 standard concerning monitoring and measuring as well as analyzes the possibilities of the usage of both standards in order to master the management systems that are being implemented in food inspection bodies.

Celem artykułu jest przedstawienie wybranych metodyk i narzędzi podnoszenia dojrzałości procesowej organizacji. Punktem wyjścia do rozważań w artykule jest definicja dojrzałości procesowej oraz syntetyczna prezentacja najważniejszych modeli dojrzałości procesowej, a także wyniki badań empirycznych identyfikujących podejścia stosowane do oceny dojrzałości procesów. W dalszej części artykułu zaprezentowano wybrane rozwiązania nie będące typowymi modelami dojrzałości procesowej, które wraz ze wzrostem potrzeb menedżerskich w zakresie rozwoju organizacji, umożliwiają podnoszenie dojrzałości procesów.

The purpose of this article is to present selected methodologies and tools for improving process maturity within the organization. The starting point for considerations is the definition of process maturity and synthetic presentation of the most important process maturity models, as well as empirical identification of approaches used to assess the maturity of processes. The second part of the article focuses on highlighting solutions not being typical process maturity models, which with growing managerial needs for organisational development are suitable tools for improving process maturity.

The aim of the article is presentation of guidance new International Standard ISO 9004:2009 "Managing for the sustained success of an organization. A quality management approach" (polish edition PN-EN ISO 9004:2010). In spite of the fact that organization's environment is complex, demanding and ever-changing it is possible to achieve a long-lasting success by consistently meeting the needs and expectations all interested parties, in a balanced way. It is difficult object which has to be supported by the effective and efficient management of the organization - basing on quality management principles (ISO 9000), learning, improvements or/and innovations. This approach is connected with risks management. Standard ISO 9004 promotes self-assessment as an important tool for the review of the maturity level in annex A. It can be useful to determine SWOT analyze.

Przedsiębiorstwa posiadające system zapewniania jakości, wdrożony w oparciu o normy serii ISO 9000 z 1994 roku, do 2003 roku będą musiały dokonać jego aktualizacji zgodnie z wymaganiami norm ISO 9000:2000. W związku z tym tak wiele uwagi poświęca się nowym normom, ich zaletom, wadom, ale przede wszystkim zmianom, które z nimi się wiążą. Większość publikacji dotyczy wymagań norm ISO 9000:2000 oraz ISO 9001:2000. Natomiast znowelizowana norma ISO 9004 traktowana jest drugoplanowo, może dlatego, iż nie jest ona wymagana do celów certyfikacji. Companies, which possess the system of ensuring quality based on the series of norms ISO 9000 from 1994, will have to actualize it according to the requirements of norms ISO 9000:2000. Therefore, so much attention is paid to the advantages and disadvantages of the new norms, and especially to the changes connected with them. The majority of publications is devoted to the requirements of norms ISO 9000:2000 and ISO 9001:2000. Whereas the amended norm ISO 9004 is treated marginally, probably because it is not necessary for the purposes of certification.
