Assignment of tasks to machines under data replication with a tie to Steiner systems

In the paper a problem of assignment of tasks to machines is formulated and solved, where a criterion of data replication is used and a large size of data imposes additional constraints. This problem is met in practice when dealing with large genomic files or other types of vast data. The necessity of comparing all pairs of files within a big set of DNA sequencing results, which we collected, maintained, and analyzed within a national genomic project, brought us to the proposed results. This problem resembles that of generating a particular Steiner system, and a mechanism observed there is employed in one of our algorithms. Based on the problem complexity, we propose two heuristic algorithms, which work very well even for instances with tight constraints and a heterogeneous environment defined. In addition, we propose a simplified method, nevertheless capable of finding very good solutions and surpassing the algorithms in some special cases. The methods are validated in tests on a wide set of instances, where values of parameters reflect our real-world application and where their usefulness is proven.

Wraz z rozwojem technologicznym, zwiększeniem dbałości o środowisko naturalne oraz popularyzacją praktyk zmniejszających ilość marnowanej żywności, producenci rozpoczęli wprowadzanie na rynek opakowań, które oddziałują na zawarty w nich produkt. Takimi opakowaniami wchodzącymi w interakcje z żywnością są opakowania aktywne, które w ostatnich latach znajdują szerokie zastosowanie, w szczególności do pakowania produktów świeżych. Jednak takie opakowania podlegają bardziej rygorystycznym wymaganiom w zakresie zapewnienia bezpieczeństwa, co jest związane z uwalnianiem składników opakowania do żywności lub jej otoczenia. Proces uwalniania substancji aktywnej powinien być odpowiednio zaplanowany, aby zapewnić przedłużenie okresu przydatności do sprzedaży lub poprawić stan opakowanej żywności. Dlatego też znajomość i przestrzeganie wymagań prawnych w tym zakresie są niezwykle istotne.

Along with technological development, increasing care for the natural environment and the popularization of practices limiting the amount of food wasted, manufacturers have started to market packaging that affects the product. Such packaging that interacts with food is active packaging, which in recent years has been widely used, in particular for packaging fresh products. However, such packaging required more restrict regulations in terms of ensuring packaging safety, which involves the release of packaging components into the packaged food or its environment. Moreover, this release process must be properly planned to extend the shelf life or the condition of the packaged food. Therefore, knowing and complying the legal requirements in this area is extremely important.

The correctness of large scale analysis of genomic data

Implementing a large genomic project is a demanding task, also from the computer science point of view. Besides collecting many genome samples and sequencing them, there is processing of a huge amount of data at every stage of their production and analysis. Efficient transfer and storage of the data is also an important issue. During the execution of such a project, there is a need to maintain work standards and control quality of the results, which can be difficult if a part of the work is carried out externally. Here, we describe our experience with such data quality analysis on a number of levels - from an obvious check of the quality of the results obtained, to examining consistency of the data at various stages of their processing, to verifying, as far as possible, their compatibility with the data describing the sample.

Nowe regulacje dotyczące znakowania żywności bez GMO

W artykule omówiono najważniejsze zagadnienia związane z Ustawą z 13 czerwca 2019 r. o oznakowaniu produktów wytworzonych bez wykorzystania organizmów genetycznie zmodyfikowanych jako wolnych od tych organizmów, ujednolicającą zasady znakowania żywności i pasz, bez organizmów modyfikowanych genetycznie, likwidującą dowolność umieszczania takich informacji na produktach spożywczych. Nowa regulacja nie wprowadza całkowitej eliminacji śladowych ilości GMO oraz zakazu styczności z GMO - dopuszczalna ilość zawartości wynosi do 0,1% w żywności, a w paszy do 0,9%. Ustawa nie wyklucza również, poza wprowadzonymi okresami karencji, możliwości karmienia zwierząt paszami GMO, co może powodować problemy - m.in. technicznej wykrywalności modyfikacji genetycznych czy kwestii związanych z obowiązkami rzetelnego informowania konsumenta o produkcie. Nadal podstawowym problemem jest kwestia: czy stosowanie tego typu oznaczeń powinno być dopuszczalne, biorąc pod uwagę powszechną obecność organizmów modyfikowanych genetycznie i coraz większą trudność w ich faktycznym eliminowaniu.

The article discusses the key problems concerning the Act of 13 June 2019 on labelling products manufactured without the use of genetically modified organisms as products free from such organisms, which standardises the principles of labelling GMO-free food and animal feed. This will put an end to the flexibility of including such information on foodstuffs. The new regulation does not fully eliminate trace amounts GMOs nor does it prevent contact therewith (the permissible GMO limit in food is up to 0.1% and up to 0.9% in animal feed). The act does not exclude the option of feeding animals with GMO feed, save the introduced waiting periods, which may give rise to various issues, including the problem of the technical detectability of genetic modifications or matters related to providing reliable information on products to consumers. However, the primary concern is still whether such marking should be permitted considering the widespread presence of genetically modified organisms and the increasing difficulty in the actual elimination thereof.
