A new method of determination of individual linear electrooptic coefficients is proposed. The technique is based on the dynamic polarimetric measurements and takes into consideration the temperature dependences of ordinary and extraordinary refractive indices. Results obtained for the electrooptic coefficients r ₁₁₃ and r ₃₃₃ in LiNbO₃ are presented. The coefficients are found to increase significantly within the considered temperature range 25-200°C. The temperature dependences of the intrinsic coefficients m ₁₁₃ and m ₃₃₃ defined in terms of the induced polarisation, are considered as well.

The paper presents the latest experimental results on propagation properties of a photonic crystal fiber infilled with a nematic liquid crystal characterized by either extremely low (of the order of ~0.05) or relatively high (of the order of ~0.3) material birefringence. The nematic liquid crystal was introduced into the micro holes of the photonic crystal fiber by the capillary effect. Due to anisotropic properties of the obtained photonic liquid-crystal fiber, guiding mechanism that has to be attributed to the photonic band gap effect has been demonstrated.

Measurements of temperature dependence of linear electrooptic coefficients defined in terms of the electric field r ₂₂ and the induced polarization m ₂₂ were made for LiNbO₃ within the temperature range 25°C-200°C. After annealing, the coefficient r ₂₂ in samples with xc =49.3% is found to be nearly temperature independent, increasing at 125°C only 0.6%. Contrary to the commonly observed temperature behaviour of intrinsic coefficients, m ₂₂ instead of r ₂₂, changes significantly with temperature.

Measurements of the quadratic electrooptic coefficient g₁₂₁₂ of ammonium dihydrogen phosphate (ADP) were made. The coefficient g* = g₁₁₁₁ - g₂₂₁₁ - 2g₁₂₁₂ related to the anisotropy of electrooptic effect is determined. The value obtained for the coefficient is g*= -15.8x10⁻²⁰ m⁻² V⁻². This shows that the anisotropy of quadratic electrooptic effect in ADP is stronger than that estimated previously for potassium dihydrogen phosphate.

Content available remote Kerr constants in silicon oils of various viscosities

Values of the Kerr constant B and changes in B with temperature in some silicon oils are determined. The measurements show that B is close to 1 · 10-15 m/V² and (l/B)(∂B/∂T) is about 10-3 deg-1. The results obtained indicate that these liquid dielectrics can be useful in measurements of the quadratic electrooptic coefficients in crystals.

Określono wartości stałych Kerra B oraz ich zależności od temperatury w wybranych olejach silikonowych. Przeprowadzone pomiary pokazały, że stała B jest bliska 10-15 m/V² zaś (l/B)(∂B/∂T) jest rzędu wielkości 10-3 deg-1. Otrzymane wyniki pokazują, że rozpatrywane ciekłe dielektryki mogą być użyteczne w pomiarach kwadratowego efektu elektrooptycznego w kryształach.
