Hydrogen emission accompanying atmospheric oxidation of coal from Polish mines

Węgle te zmielono i do dalszych badań użyto frakcji <0,2 mm.
The aim of our work was to seek an answer whether hydrogen emission may occur during atmospheric oxidation of Polish coals. Six coals samples from various coal mines were studied. The samples were ground and the fractions < 0,2 mm were selected for further experiments. The samples were loaded into glass reactors. The reactors were flushed and then, filled either by oxygen and helium mixture (20: 80 % vol) or by nitrogen. Next, the reactors were heated at a constant temperature (50 or 90°C) for different times (24,48 or 72 h). After the heating, gas atmospheres of the reactors were GC analyzed. Hewllet-Packard 4890 D, equipped with t.c. detector and 4 m column (Carbosieve 60/80 mesh) was used. Programmed heating and helium gas carrier were applied. The gas analyses after heating the samples in nitrogen atmosphere (Table 1) revealed the absence or traces of hydrogen. Thus, hydrogen is rather not a component of gas phase adsorbed in pore system of coals. The analyses after heating the samples in oxygen/helium atmosphere (Table 2) indicated that all oxidized coals generated molecular hydrogen. Some coals generated it already after oxidation at 50°C; others -after oxidation at 90°C. The generation of methane by the oxidized coals was also observed.
