W artykule poddano analizie przyczyny wdrażania systemów zarządzania środowiskowego w Polsce. Przeprowadzono badania ankietowe [ankieta pocztowa] wśród przedsiębiorstw posiadających SZŚ zgodny z normą ISO 14001. Próbowano określić jak zmieniała się rola poszczególnych przyczyn wdrażania SZŚ w czasie. Wykazano, ze wraz z postępem transformacji systemowej malało znaczenie wdrażania certyfikowanych SZŚ jako sposobu na legitymizację działań podmiotów krajowych, zaufanie do produktów i przedsiębiorstw z Polski wzrosło na tyle, iż zmalało znaczenie SZŚ oraz norm serii ISO 14001.

Currently, in the area of environmental protection measures, environmental management systems are the most prevalent form of self-regulation on the part of enterprises. They exemplify an active approach to environmental issues. As such, they give rise to several interesting and important research questions concerning reasons for their implementation and effects of their operations in enterprises. The aim of the article is (1) to identify the motives underlying adoption of such environmental measures by enterprises, and (2) to analyse these motives in terms of the year of system implementation, size of enterprise, sector of the economy and ownership form.
