The paper shows the present state of works on the geothermal energy use in Poland and the main directions of research concentrating on the optimisation of geothermal heat tapping and its management. An outline of the existing geothermal stations in Bańska-Biały Dunajec and in Pyrzyce has been given. The project of the station in Mszczonów (about to be completed) and the planned ones in Uniejów, Skierniewice and Żyrardów has been discussed. Apart from the state of geothermal development, the paper also includes the main directions of research on tapping and utilisation of waters at temperatures about 20°C with the aid of heat pumps. The list of all the objects, level of advancement and technical data is being worked out at the Geothermal Laboratory MEERI PAS to be published in "The country update report - Poland 1998" for the proceedings of the European Geothermal Conference in Basle 1999.
