W artykule przedstawiono w zarysie przebieg i główne rozwiązania instytucjonalne przyjęte w procesie restrukturyzacji kolei niemieckich. Celem reform był wzrost przewozów kolejowych przy zmniejszonym obciążeniu finansów publicznych. Efekty przewozowe i finansowe po 20 latach wskazują, że wskazują, że cele reform zostały zrealizowane. Od 2003 roku koncern DB AG odnotowuje dodatni wynik finansowy, a spadkowy trend udziału kolei w rynku przewozowym w Niemczech został zahamowany. Funkcjonowanie rynku kolejowego w Niemczech postrzegane jest w Europie jako rozwiązanie modelowe.

The article presents an overview of the course and the main institutional arrangements adopted in the process of restructuring of the German railways. The aim of the reforms was the growth of the rail carriage at a reduced load of public finances. Transport and financial effects after 20 years indicate that the reform objectives have been achieved. Since 2003, the company DB AG has a positive financial result, a downward trend in the market share of rail transport in Germany was stopped. The railway market functioning in Germany is perceived in Europe as a model solution.
