The article presents the reasons and conditions of economic integration in the European Economic Community and a general characteristic of respective integration stages beginning with a free trade zone, customs union, common market and economic union concluding. Due to the lack of theories explaining in detail connections between direct foreign investments and economic integration theory, the author analyses general ties appearing in this area. The effects in foreign trade, accompanying selective stages of an economic integration, the, so called, trade creation effect and trade moving effect, have become a bridge in this area. The analysis of the mentioned above effects appearing in the Polish foreign trade has been based on real statistical data. In the further part of the article an attempt has been made to differentiate factors deciding of the transfer of the foreign trade effects (resulting from economic integration) onto capital flow in the form of direct foreign investments.
