Virus-like particles (VLPs) assemble spontaneously during the viral cycle or in heterologous systems during expression of viral structural protein. Depending on the complexity of the VLPs, they can be obtained by expression in prokaryotic or eukaryotic expression system from the suitable recombinant vectors, or formed in cell-free conditions. Moreover, they can be built from proteins of a single virus, or can present the proteins or peptides derived from a virus or cell on a platform derived from any other single virus, thus forming chimeric VLPs. VLPs are best known for their immunogenic properties, but the versatility of VLPs allows a wide variety of applications. They are lately in the centre of investigations in vaccinology, drug delivery and gene therapy. This review focuses on utilization of VLPs for drug delivery.

The aim of this article is to present artistic strategies of mediation between non-human nature of SARS-CoV-2 and non-fictional literature, whose authors use narrative structures to express experience of struggling with virus as alienated form of existence. Author of the article describes books written by practicing doctors - Rachel Clarks (Breathtaking. Inside the NHS in a time of pandemic) and Tomasz Rezydent (Invisible Front. Doctor’s Notes from the First Line of Battle with Coronavirus, Fear and Pandemic) using perspective of narrative medicine, which problematizes the ways of communicating illness and suAering. One of the crucial thesis of article considers coronavirus pandemic as important factor in cultural history of breathing, which is transforming from spiritual to post-human interpretation of phenomenon of breath.

The subjects were 13 horses, of which 5 clinically healthy ones were infected intranasally and intraconjunctivally with a suspension of two subtypes of the influenza virus: A/equi/1 and A/equi/2, and 3 were control animals. The remaining 5 horses became ill in a natural way. In the early phase of injection, the haematological determinations showed in the experimental horses a decrease in the lcucocyte, lymphocyte, neutrophil, and platelet counts. The changes in the values of erythrocyte indices (red blood cell count, haemoglobin content, and packed cell volume) were more weakly marked, though a tendency to decrease their value occurred. Similar results were obtained in the animals naturally infected with equine influenza virus although their cxamination was started only from the 6th day of illness.

We present and analyze numerically a mathematical model of interactions between adaptive immune system and viral infection. The model is a bilinear system of partial integro-differential equations of Boltzmann type. It is a generalization of the recently proposed kinetic models that consider particular (namely, the cellmediated and the humoral) immune mechanisms used in the fight against viral infections. We use Matlab to solve complicated system of equations, present the results of computer simulations and explain their immunological meaning. The results show that the model can describe in a better way (in comparison with the previous kinetic models) real biological situations and is able to illustrate various methods of therapy.

Demographic changes and the development of transportation contribute to the rapid spread of influenza. Before an idea of a 'person to person' spread appeared, divergent theories were developed to explain influenza epidemics in the past. Intensified virological and serological tests became possible after isolation of the human influenza virus in 1933. The first influenza virus detection methods were based on its isolation in egg embryos or cell lines and on demonstration of the presence of the viral antigens. Molecular biology techniques associated with amplification of RNA improved the quality of tests as well as sensitivity of influenza virus detection in clinical samples. It became possible to detect mixed infections caused by influenza types A and B and to identify the strain of the virus. Development of reliable diagnostic methods enabled fast diagnosis of influenza which is important for choosing an appropriate medical treatment.

Genetic recombination plays an important role in the evolution of virus genomes. In this study we analyzed publicly; available genomic sequences of Pepino mosaic virus (PepMV) for recombination events using several bioinformatics tools. The genome-wide analyses not only confirm the presence of previously found recombination events in PepMV but also provide the first evidence for double recombinant origin of the US2 isolate.

EN
Viruses compress their genome to reduce space. One of the main techniques is overlapping genes. We model this process by the shortest common superstring problem. We give an algorithm for computing optimal solutions which is slow in the number of strings but fast (linear) in their total length. This algorithm is used for a number of viruses with relatively few genes. When the number of genes is larger, we compute approximate solutions using the greedy algorithm which gives an upper bound for the optimal solution. We give also a lower bound for the shortest common superstring problem. The results obtained are then compared with what happens in nature. Remarkably, the compression obtained by viruses is very close to the one achieved by modern computers.

Viruses are very important infection factors that are hazardous for people as well as animals. In the past two decodes, the investigation shown that the water is a possible way of viruses transmission. Their presence is well documented in ground, surface and drinking water, so there is a need to investigate the viruses and to elaborate the norms of water quality. In addition there currently exist a need for rapid and cost effective methods to determine the presence of viruses, specially based on molecular analysis. The environmental monitoring and utilization of viruses from drinking water has to be elaborated. The recent investigations point out for ozone as the best system for viruses utilization.

Vitamin D is a prohormone soluble in fats. It has multidirectional effects, among others on bone mineralization processes and modulation of the immune system. Due to these properties, research is being conducted on the influence of vitamin D on the development of SARS-CoV-2 (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2) infection. The postulated mechanism of action of vitamin D in coronavirus infection is that it affects the ACE2/ACE (angiotensin converting enzyme) balance and inhibits the cytokine storm. Research shows that low serum levels of 25(OH)D can increase morbidity. The results of studies on the influence of hypovitaminosis on the severity of the course of COVID-19 (coronavirus disease 19) infection and mortality are inconclusive. Vitamin D also plays a role in infections caused by other viruses, such as the flu virus. Further randomized studies are needed to clearly define the function of vitamin D in coronavirus infection.

Witamina D jest rozpuszczalnym w tłuszczach prohormonem. Wykazuje wielokierunkowe działanie, wpływając m.in. na procesy mineralizacji kości.

Materiały i metody. Fotouczulacze: pochodne liematoporfiryny (HpD), ftalocyjanina zawierająca gal (BON-6) i mesoketol, pochodna chlorynów. Wirusy: wirus zapalenia pęcherzykowego jamy ustnej (VSV) oraz opryszczki zwykłej (HSV-1). Źródło światła: lampa halogenowa. Rozmazy krwi: po PDT pobierano 5-6 mikrolltrów krwi (z wirusem i fotouczulaczem) i wykonywano standardowe rozmazy. Oceny dokonywało niezależnie dwóch patologów. Kryteria oceny: wielkość i kształt krwinek czerwonych -1, prawidłowe; lekko uszkodzone (0,75) i ciężko uszkodzone - 0,5. Agregacja, hemoliza i zwyrodnienie ziarniste były określane w procentach w stosunku do wszystkich komórek.

Photodynamic therapy (PDT) is a promising method of treatment of tumors in human. It Is based on application of certain chemicals called as photosensitlzers. Recently, much interest was directed towards antimicrobial use of PDT and thus, possible sterilization of blood or blood products for transfusion. Materials and methods. Photosensltizers: hematoporphyrin derivative (HpD), hydroxygalllum (III). phthalocyanine tetra-sulphonic acid tetrasodium salt (BON-6) and chlorin derivative, mesocetol (mesok). Viruses: vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV) and herpes simplex virus-1 (HSV-1). Light source: halogen lamps were used to sensitize photosensltizers. Blood smears: after PDT was completed 5-6 I of blood (containing sensitizer and virus) were taken, placed on glass slides In order to make smears. After the routine fixation and staining they were evaluated by two Independent pathologists. Evaluation criteria: size and shape of RBC: normal (1), slightly affected (0.75), strongly affected (0.5); aggregation, hemolysis and granular degeneration In % to the total number of cells: < 5% - excellent and suitable for transfusion, 5-10% - good, possible application for transfusion, 10-20% - poor, not suitable and > 20% - bad. Results. They showed that both new photosensitlzers are more active than HpD in photokilling of viruses. Beside It, BON-6 and mesok showed to be less damaging to RBC. Conclusion. With respect to the photosensitlzer structure, we hope at this moment, that a certain degree of amphiphilic character is required to photoinactivate enveloped viruses.
