Results of the study on impact of the late ground frost on cones of Larix decidua Mill. and cono- and seminiphagous insects: Strobilomyia laricicola (Karl) and Megastigmus pictus (Först.) are given. On 120 twigs, each 1 m in length, the distance of cone from twig apex was measured. It was determined which cones were not damaged by frost, and which were dead. The data obtained were subjected to a statistical analysis using the Kolmogorov-Smirnov's test, Student's t-test and U Mann Whitney's test. No unequivocal correlation was found between position of a cone on the twig and the effect of low temperature. The late ground frost destroyed 218 cones (61,6%) of a 357 analysed. It was found that the mature cones (not destroyed by the late frost) often (56,1%) were inhabited by S. laricicola. Seeds extracted from these cones, were dissected, and it was found that seeds were infested by M. pictus. This seminiphagous insect destroyed from 0,6% to 7,2% of seeds (3,3% of 3000 analysed). The cones were collected in southern Poland from 30 larches on six localities (5 in each loc.) in a national park, seed plantations and in a managed stand during the growing season of 2001.

The studies were carried out from 1995 to 1997 in southern Poland in the Beskid Śląski Mts (BŚ) being under effect of industrial emissions and the Beskid Żywiecki Mts. (BŻ) — partly tree of such effect. In both these regions a total of 2,780 cones (including 1,465 in BŚ) were collected from 153 standing spruces Picea abies (L.) Karst. (incl. 76 in BŚ). Cones collected were used for analysis and for rearing. During the studies 4,961 specimens of cone and seed damaging insects (incl. 2,134 from BŚ) were obtained. In both regions they were represented by conophages: Cydia strobilella L., Díoryctria abietella (Den. et Schiff.), Eupithecia pini Retz., Kaltenbachiola strobi (Winn.), Strobilomyia anthracina (Czerny), and seminiphages Plemeliella abietina Seitn. and Megastigmus strobilobius Ratz. The most abundant species in both regions was P. abietina (1,726 spec. in BŚ; 1,755 spec. n BŻ). Conophages destroyed 16.89% of all 184,461 analysed seeds (incl. 90,478 in BŚ). Maximum seed losses caused by P. abietina varied from 14.8% (BŚ) to 35.4% (BŻ). Information on parasitoids of C. strobilella, K. strobi and P. abietina are given.

Results of the study on infestation of co nys of Abies alba Mill. by cono- and seminiphages insects (502 in total) are given. Forty three samples of cones (646 cones in total) collected in the selected seed stands in 35 localities (the Kraków Forest Region) in 1999-2000 were tested. During the study damaging insects were represented by conophages: Barbara herrichiana Obr., Dioryctria abietella (Fabr.) and Earomyia impossibile Morge, and seminiphages Resseliella piceae Seitn. and Megastigmus suspectus Borr. The most abundant species in both years was R. piceae (280 spec. in 1999; 79 spec. in 2000). Conophages inhabitat 37.6% of all analysed cones. Resseliella piceae destroyed the most seeds, i.e. 15.6% of 12,900 analysed, in both years. The indices of cone infestation (WZS) showed distinct differences in values for both years, namely 1.56 and 0,35 respectively.
