The paper "Two types of narrative strategies – two types of suspense" presents several general points concerning the structure of theatre performance examined by means of narratology and reception theory. The author explores strategies that enable a theatre director to attract spectators and engage them in an active participation in the performance. Analysis of two types of suspense is presented: that of a plot suspense (i.e. spectator is attracted by the plot), and an interpretative suspense (i.e. spectator is attracted by the necessity of negotiating the meanings by oneself); the two types of suspense are defined and demonstrated using examples of concrete directorial strategies. The theoretical study is followed by a practical demonstration of the given methodology in the analysis of Ladislav Smoček's production of Hráči (The Gamblers), based on the eponymous play by Nikolai Gogol, at the Činoherní klub Theatre (1982).

The present study deals with the problem of reflexivity in Ludvík Vaculík’s semi-autobiographical novel Czech Dream Book (samizdat 1981; English 2019). The notion of reflexivity is conceived of as the intersection of real empirical life and the fictional world. The real author approached a number of people from the dissident circle with a request to review the first version (and later the expanded manuscript) of his novel. This collective engagement with the text would then become one of the important thematic lines of (later versions of) Vaculík’s multi-thematic novel. The work is reflexive in yet other ways: correspondence with the author’s mistress Helena Bukovanská and others, for example, who eventually participate in the finalization of the novel. An important role in the subsequent reception of Czech Dream Book was also played by a book of reviews on the text, which Vaculík himself initiated and edited. This study analyzes a large amount of previously unknown material from the archives.

This study seeks an answer to the question when and how the Czech romantic K. H. Mácha (1810–1836) started to be seen as a “modern” poet who could inspire authors writing decades after his death. The study proves that the image of “modern” Mácha as the first Czech poet to achieve the autonomy of art already existed between 1860 and 1890, and that Mácha’s artistic reputation grew constantly throughout the second half of the 19th century. This argument is based on a vast amount of evidence, mostly taken from literary journalism and criticism between 1858 and 1910 (the latter year seeing the centenary of Mácha’s birth).

Tato studie se snaží popsat stav recepce české literatury pro děti a mládež v Polsku po roce 1989. Před více než 30 lety Polsko a Česká republika nastoupily na dráhu politické, sociální a ekonomické obnovy. Metamorfóza všech projevů společenského života zasáhla také kulturu a literaturu, včetně knih určených mladším a nejmladším příjemcům. Objevila se nová vydavatelství uvádějící na polský trh publikace českých autorů, kteří dříve zůstávali polskému čtenáři neznámí. Nakladatelství dodávají texty zajímavé nejen z hlediska obsahu, ale také formy, přizpůsobují svou nabídku měnícím se čtenářským preferencím. Za zdůraznění stojí, že se vydavatelství aktivně podílejí na výchově mladých generací, vkládají velké úsilí do toho, aby propagovala hodnotnou literaturu, včetně té české. Tyto nové fenomény týkající se českých knih pro děti a mládež dostupných v polských překladech jsou předmětem analýzy a interpretace této studie.

The primary purpose of this publication is to describe the last thirty years, comparing and organizing the phenomena in the reception of Czech literature for children and young adults in Poland after 1989. The mutual Polish-Czech relations and the reconstruction of the Polish publishing system had a significant impact on the nature and intensity of this reception. The relations from the end of World War II to 1989 were limited by specific political, economic, and cultural conditions and controlled by the state institutions established for that purpose.

Autor článku se zabývá recepcí beletristického i dramatického díla Karola Wojtyły (papeže Jana Pavla II.) v České republice, zejména překlady jeho literárního díla do češtiny. Zejména v souvislosti s návštěvou papeže Jana Pavla II. v Československu a v České republice byly přeloženy a vydány výbory z tvorby Karola Wojtyły. Tyto překlady autor charakterizuje a zařazuje do žánrového kontextu. V závěru článku autor poukazuje na to, značná část literární tvorby Karola Wojtyły, papeže Jana Pavla II., dosud do češtiny přeložena nebyla. Českého čtenáře tak čeká ještě nejedna příležitost k hlubšímu poznání výjimečné osobnosti papeže Jana Pavla II.

The author deals with the reception of fictional and dramatic works by Karol Wojtyla (Pope John Paul II.) in the Czech Republic, in particular with translations of his literary work into Czech. In connection with the visit of Pope John Paul II in Czechoslovakia and the Czech Republic selections from Karol Wojtyla’s works were translated and subsequently published.. In the present article these translations are described and placed in the genre context. In conclusion the author points out that many of the literary works of Karol Wojtyla, Pope John Paul II., have not yet been translated into Czech. So there will be still many opportunities for Czech readers to get a better knowledge and understanding of the exceptional mind and character of Pope John Paul II.

Autor artykułu zajmuje recepcją beletrystyki i dramatów Karola Wojtyły (papieża Jana Pawła II) w Republice Czeskiej, w szczególności przekładami jego dzieła literackiego na czeski. Zwłaszcza w związku z wizytą papieża Jana Pawła II w Czechosłowacji i w Republice Czeskiej przełożno i wydano wybory twórczości Karola Wojtyły. Te przekłady autor charakteryzuje i umieszcza w kontekście gatunku. W konkluzji artykułu autor wskazuje na to, że znaczna część literackiej twórczości Karola Wojtyły, papieża Jana Pawła II, dotąd nie została przełożona na czeski. Czeskiego czytelnika więc czeka jeszcze niejedna sposobność do głębszego poznania wyjątkowej osobowości papieża Jana Pawła II.
