The development of reconstructed woody vegetation on coal mine dumps during the trajectory of reclamation was explicitly investigated by means of a rehabilitation technique. However, limited information is available about the composition of herbaceous species during the ecosystem re-development on mine dumps. The present study attempted to assess the composition of herbaceous vegetation beneath plantation stands of four native woody species on the coal mine spoil in a dry tropical environment. After a thorough survey of the study site, a total of 44 species of herbaceous plants belonging to 14 families were recorded. Among the recorded plant families, the Poaceae contributed the highest number of species (18) across all ages of all plantation stands. The biodiversity parameter such as species richness exhibited an increasing trend with age under plantation stand of T. grandis only, while the rest of the plantations showed a decreasing trend. In terms of the similarity index, the plantation stands of A. procera and T. grandis were closer to each other while A. lebbeck and D. strictus were farthest apart. However, the highest IVI was recorded in the seedling of A. lebbeck under the planted stand of A. lebbeck while lowest of Rungia repens (2.85) under A. procera stands at 17th-year of age. In conclusion, the plantation age, dominant tree species, and species specificity have a significant impact on the development of herbaceous vegetation beneath the plantation stand of four native woody species.

The occurrence of mountain plant species in the Polish lowlands has been at the centre of attention of many botanists. In 2008-2011 we carried out field studies aimed at describing a new lowland population of White Twisted-stalk S. amplexifolius discovered in 2008. We focused on the following aims: to determine the current status of the lowland population of S. amplexifolius; to characterize phytocenoses and habitat conditions in which the species occur; to identify factors that can potentially pose a threat on the population and to propose guidelines for its protection. The newly discovered population is located in the Trójca Forest District (50º 38.737’ N; 18º 48.945’ E), forest department 61L. The main part of the population (ca. 70%) occupies an area of approximately 100 m2. Currently, to protect the population from grazing, the whole area (about 0.25 ha) has been surrounded by metal mesh fence. The population occurs within a poorly developed patch of Fraxino- Alnetum. It contains 107 branched and fruiting individuals of S. amplexifolius and 83 smaller plants (branchless and sporadically fruiting). The number of fruits per plant varies between 6 and 20. One fruit contains an average of 5 seeds (a maximum of 12 seeds and a minimum of 3 seeds per fruit). The occurrence of numerous Padus serotina seedlings and young plants is recorded within the site. Human-related factors have caused substantial changes in the water relations and, subsequently, also in the species composition of these plant communities. The population of S. amplexifolius within the described site seems to be in good condition and develops normally.

The research was carried out in the following 9 mesoregions of northem Poland, located on either side of the Vistula: Cassubian Coast, Cassubian Lakeland, Elbląg Plateaux, Górowo Plateaux, Ermelandic Plain, Iława Lakeland, Vistula Delta, Starogard Lakeland and Lower Vistula Valley. Atotal of 11 cropfield-weed communities have been distinguished and described. Those found in cereal crops included: Teesdaleo-Arnoseridetum, Papavereturn argemones, a transition community between Vicietum tetraspermae and Aphano-Matric.:arietum, AphanoMatric.:arietum, Lathyro-Melandrietum and Spergulo-Chrysanthemetum segeti. In root crops the oceurrenee was found of: Digitarietum isc.:haemii, Ec.:hinoc.:hlooSetarietum, Lamio-Veronic.:etum politae, Galinsogo-Setarietum, Fumarietum officinalis and Spergulo-Chrysanthemetum segeti. Due to the presence in the patches of most communities, especially root crop communities, of many common species, they show a number of similarities, floristie and structural.

Badania roślinności segetalnej prowadzono w dziewięciu mezoregionach Polski północnej, położonych po obu stronach Wisły. Są to: Pobrzeże Kaszubskie, Pojezierze Kaszubskie, Wzniesienia Elbląskie, Wzniesienia Górowskie, Równina Warmińska, Pojezierze Iławskie, Żuławy Wiślane, Pojezierze Starogardzkie i Dolina Dolnej Wisły. W pracy wyróżniono i opisano 11 zbiorowisk chwastów upraw polnych. W uprawach okopowych stwierdzono występowanie: Digitarietum ischaemii, Echinochloo-Setarietum, Lamio- Veronicetum politae, Galinsogo-Setarietum, Fumarietum officinalis i Spergulo- Chrysanthemetum segeti. Występowanie w płatach większości zbiorowisk, zwłaszcza okopowych, wielu gatunków wspólnych sprawia, że wykazują one szereg podobieństw zarówno florystycznych jak i strukturalnych.

The paper presents the results of phytosociological research on the thermophilous oak forest Potentillo albae-Quercetum Libbert 1933 nom. invers., which has been carried out in the central part of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland. The association, which has been stated in 7 localities, is a new type of forest vegetation in this region. On the basis of 35 relevés, made in 2001 following the Braun-Blanquet method, the only subassociation P.a.-Q. brachypodietosum pinnati has been distinguished. It has been divided into two variants: with Pleurozium schreberi (on acid sites), and with Asarum europaeum (on basic ones). The investigated phytocoenoses abound in floristic peculiarities, such as: Adenophora liliifolia, Bupleurum longifolium, Euphorbia angulata, Festuca amethystina ssp. ritschlii, Lilium martagon, Potentilla alba.

A phytosociological classifi cation and the characteristics of weed communities developing in root crops of the Kałuszyńska Upland are given in this paper. The presence of three associations: Digitarietum ischaemi, Echinochloo-Setarietum and Lamio-Veronicetum politae, as well as of two communities: Setaria pumila–Setaria viridis and Panico-Setarion alliance, has been found. The differentiation in trophic and soil moisture conditions of habitats results in the fl oristic diversity of communities, divided into lower phytosociological units. Two variants have been distinguished within the association Digitarietum ischaemi, whereas Echinochloo-Setarietum has been divided into 2 subassociations and 6 variants.

The phytosociological database as a tool for synthetic and comprehensive study of semi-natural meadows in the Polish part of the Carpathians is presented. It has been developed in the Institute of Nature Conservation of the Polish Academy of Sciences since 2007. All accessible phytosociological relevés were digitalized and stored in a TURBOVEG database. As of January 2013, 4620 relevés have been collected in the database, chiefly from mesic meadows of Arrhenatherion alliance (76%) and mat-grass swards of Nardo-Callunetea class (18%). They were recorded between 1923 and 2012 at an altitude range of 195–2000 m above sea level. For improving territorial coverage of the region by vegetation sampling, since 2009 an extensive field survey has been carried out to collect data from previously unexplored areas and record the actual stage of semi-natural grasslands. As a result 1146 recent unpublished relevés were collected. The statistics of available resources, discussion on the data quality and the application prospects of the database are outlined. The database “Grasslands in the Polish Carpathians” is an intrinsic part of the research on the diversity of vegetation in the Polish Carpathian grasslands, as well as a record of the changes it undergoes.
